Sailing in the Arctic Circle is definitely one for the personal achievement book Patrick. Well done. Unfortunately I'm "allergic" to sub zero temperatures, to say nothing about shovelling snow off the deck! : )

You have my most admiration for sailing in such cold climates. My beer is not that friggin cold! I think I'll stay in 16* south. I snivel when it gets below 78! But i do enjoy watching someone who is willing to brave the cold. What makes this journey really interesting is it seems you are following in the footsteps of some of the Viking sailors. Bonjour mon amis!
In the video I am making, but have not yet posted, I ask the question, 'Did Vikings ever go South?' I've had enough of being cold for now, and am heading toward home now. :-)
Good episode Patrick! Safe sailing.....sailing in the ice and snow, shoveling snow from the decks? uh.....no thanks.....however cold water for beverages? Interesting trade-off, not that a cold beverage is at the top of the list! Have enjoyed seeing Iceland from afar, great travelogue. A few moments in each village would have been fun. Thanks again, fair (southerly) winds! Andrew

Hello Patrick Great to follow your solo adventures. I’d like to ask you about your HH foul weather gear. Would you mind offering a little review of your jacket & how it copes with the passages you have been making?
I think if I had made the trip about a month later the video quality would have been much better ---- blue skies instead of grey ---- and 10°C instead of freezing! Thanks for watching.
Ian Harwood Isabelle has never been so filthy. In addition to the tyres, the wind blows volcanic dust that covers everything........ She is in need of a particularly strong rain shower.

Excellent video as per usual, Patrick. This one brought back a few memories for me from maybe 25+ years ago when I was doing some work in Akureyri, Iceland and had an opportunity to fly to Grimsey. Not as exciting, nor as interesting, as your voyage but a fond memory for me nonetheless. I continue to love your commentary (and humor).
I've watched all your videos and it brings me a smile on my face of satisfaction. But today you made me laugh so much 8:40 that my daughter came to see me to see if I was okay. I really love your videos, always full of knowledge of the sea and the life of a Sailor.
I see why people sail the northern latitudes. The landscapes are out of storybooks. Just spectacular! Between your videos, those of Erik Aanderaa (I see he watches your videos), and Roger Taylor in Mingming and Mingming II, I'm getting an itch. And the seas themselves are a challenge of the sort we need from time to time. Bravo Zulu on these. Gotta finish my catamaran!
Great video again! I'm glad you didn't have 18m waves! I remember driving the north of Iceland and seeing the sun just touch the horizon and come back up (I was there in June) great fun! I hope you managed to get someone to buy you a beer with the story of how you had just returned from the Arctic :-)! The AIS on bouys is a fantastic idea, seems obvious that they should be seen by everyone :-)! Hopefully they will continue to be tolerated!
Welcome back MiQ, and thanks for the kind feedback. I'm still in Iceland -- and planning to jump to the Faroe Islands this coming week weather permitting.
It's not too kind. It's the truth about your video. I'm not a great mariner. I've just sailed a little further than most but not nearly as far as some.
Yeah --- it was silly of me not to spend 20 seconds to show how it is actually done. If you dock on bollards shared with big ships, it's important to do this---as the lines from big ships are very, very heavy.
Hi, as I see, at 5:29 you made a very good line setup for docking. When you have you mouring line attached to the bow cliet of the boat and you attach the other end of the line to the mooring cliet, all you need to do is let the boat forward so that the mooring cliet is at midship. then you just apply some throttle and secure the rudder in a way that the aft of the boat goes toward the mooring dock. The throttle, the rudder and you mooring line will force the boat paralell to the dock,.
I love watching your videos Patrick. You, Drake Paragon, RAN, Erik and Old Seadog have inspired the purchase of my first sailboat! Planning to step the mast on Saturday!
I actually studied going west via the Northern route on this trip --- but it is really a tough way to do it……… Perhaps some day. When I was a pilot, I flew my little Piper across the Atlantic --- and stopped in St Johns before the big leap. :-)
Hi Patrick I totally get the scariest bit being the coming into dock. I used to fly hang gliders and have been at 10,000ft in one. People used to ask if that was scary and I would have to explain that 10k was great, its the last 20ft that hurt. In the sailing that we do, its much the same. We actually had a rope around our prop last week in a marina in 35+knots of wind which wasn't much fun. The sail there in over 40 was fine but that last 20ft....
Sailing with the Foxwell Family I know exactly what you are talking about. A line around a prop while entering a marina is one of my recurring nightmares. 😳. I saw you did a new video. WiFi access here is a challenge, but will watch it as soon as possible.

@@patricklaine6958 Yes the same guy! I had to divert to Cape Verde due to damage from bad weather. Am going back to get the boat ready for another go this October.

Sorrry to correct you Patrick. I crossed the arctic circle both in Iceland and in Norway and it is both at the same lattitude: 90° - 23°26' (tropic of cancer). For practical purpose the earth axis is not wobbling. Having said that, I still think your documentation is extremely inspiring and pleasurable (from the warmth of my home)
Ha! We're both right RS, though you perhaps more than me. It all depends on your time frame. "The position of the Arctic Circle is not fixed and currently runs 66°33′48.5″ north of the Equator. Its latitude depends on the Earth's axial tilt, which fluctuates within a margin of more than 2° over a 41,000-year period, due to tidal forces resulting from the orbit of the Moon. Consequently, the Arctic Circle is currently drifting northwards (shrinking) at a speed of about 15 m (49 ft) per year." :-)
Yep, also loved the shirt...made me laugh out loud whilst waiting for my flight to Cape Town, earning me odd looks from my fellow passengers, which made me laugh even more. Thanks for the lesson (the mooring stick is fab). Great video.
I just found your channel and subscribed. I sail in the Great Lakes so your attire looks much more familiar to me than what the channels sailing the Caribbean are wearing. I enjoy your videos but would love to see more of the places you're visiting. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Hi Patrick :-) First of all; thanks a lot for Your wonderful videoes! Apart from just enjoying Your videoes about being on the water and life onboard, I find them full of good information and the sharing of Your experiences, so we can all learn! I've seen them all several times, and I'm currently on my third viewing of Your videoes about Your trip to Iceland ... :-) Wintertime is a bit hard to come through, but Your videoes helps a lot ;-) You have previously mentioned, that ISABELLA was not very good at laying hove-too, and therefore You didn't use that much as a tool to handle severe weather (or wait for a favourable tide :-) ) I believe that was when You had just Your genoa. At the time I thought it was probably because of the hull shape and finkeel design. But since then, I've been wondering - after You have equipped ISABELLA with a staysail - have You noticed if the moving aft of the sailarea with just the staysail, have improved the ability to heave-too, or is it still the same ? Best regards, Christian S Larsen Roskilde, Denmark
That's a good point Christian. On my last major sail, I was in a near-gale at night and finally was worn down by 30° heel and jolting seas --- and I hove to with the staysail. I didn't seek the perfect 'hove to' position --- actually a little closer to forereaching, but it did it just fine on the staysail, and I was able to grab a couple of hours of much needed sleep. The next time I am in a serious blow, I'll give heaving to another try using the staysail, and film the performance. :-)
Patrick Laine Hi again, Patrick, Thanks for Your reply! I was just wondering whether the sail on an inner forestay would do a difference. Today I have a 27' longkeeled 1.generation GRP boat (Fingal 27. An old Swedish design. My boat is from 1968). As a longkeeler She heaves-too very well, and I prefere this 'tactic' much more than strugling with droques etc. But I'm looking for a larger and more modern boat, and like so many, I'm kind of fallen for the Bavaria boats, and what they offer. Your videoes and what You do and proof these boats are capable of, plays no small part in this 😊 But, as I would like a boat capable of stably laying hove-too when I need it, I was wondering whether there is a way and a trick to get the Bavaria to do this... That was a rather long story from me - Sorry 😉 Again; Thanks for Your reply, and Thanks for Your wonderful videoes! Best regards, Christian
Patrick, I love your videos and have huge respect for you as a sailor. Your video course plotting across the English Channel is still my all-time favorite sailing video. Thanks for letting us share in your adventure. And yes, the Hawaiian shirt was awesome! ;-)

Am loving your latest adventure Patrick.I would love to sail up there one summer. Thanks for sharing!!
Is this the Wandering Steve who was crossing the Atlantic last year? Lost track of you in the Canary Islands if so.
@@patricklaine6958 Yes the same guy! I had to divert to Cape Verde due to damage from bad weather. Am going back to get the boat ready for another go this October.
Glad to hear all is well. Good luck on the next go. 😎
Its an icelandic saga and a splendid one at that! Safe travels and fair winds.

Desire Bastiaens Svalbard is ‘real’ Arctic exploration Desire. Definitely on my bucket list. 😉
Another great episode. Thank you so much to share your adventures and sailing skills with us.
Impressive Patrick! Even our old Danish Vikings must bow in the grave's dust in respect. 🇩🇰💪🏼😉👍🏼
Enjoying your journey. Thanks for sharing your travels.
I just found your channel and subscribed. I sail in the Great Lakes so your attire looks much more familiar to me than what the channels sailing the Caribbean are wearing. I enjoy your videos but would love to see more of the places you're visiting. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Hi Patrick :-)
First of all; thanks a lot for Your wonderful videoes! Apart from just enjoying Your videoes about being on the water and life onboard, I find them full of good information and the sharing of Your experiences, so we can all learn! I've seen them all several times, and I'm currently on my third viewing of Your videoes about Your trip to Iceland ... :-) Wintertime is a bit hard to come through, but Your videoes helps a lot ;-)
You have previously mentioned, that ISABELLA was not very good at laying hove-too, and therefore You didn't use that much as a tool to handle severe weather (or wait for a favourable tide :-) ) I believe that was when You had just Your genoa. At the time I thought it was probably because of the hull shape and finkeel design. But since then, I've been wondering - after You have equipped ISABELLA with a staysail - have You noticed if the moving aft of the sailarea with just the staysail, have improved the ability to heave-too, or is it still the same ?
Best regards,
Christian S Larsen

That's a good point Christian. On my last major sail, I was in a near-gale at night and finally was worn down by 30° heel and jolting seas --- and I hove to with the staysail. I didn't seek the perfect 'hove to' position --- actually a little closer to forereaching, but it did it just fine on the staysail, and I was able to grab a couple of hours of much needed sleep. The next time I am in a serious blow, I'll give heaving to another try using the staysail, and film the performance. :-)
Patrick Laine Hi again, Patrick,
Thanks for Your reply!
Best regards,
Christian
Thanks so much Patrick great series really enjoying it. Fair winds
Thank you Patrick - enjoyed all of that. BZ.👍😀⛵️
Looks cold Patrick but hey it can only get warmer the more south you go.
I'll drink to that!
Patrick, I love your videos and have huge respect for you as a sailor. Your video course plotting across the English Channel is still my all-time favorite sailing video. Thanks for letting us share in your adventure. And yes, the Hawaiian shirt was awesome! ;-)
I am totally enjoying your videos. Love the humour and totally jealous of your trip. It looks so cold, I'm pretty sure you had a bit of ice on the camera lens at one time.
Thank you again for another inspiring video me and my partner hoping to go go to Iceland next year something we've been planning for 2 years now but we are going to cheat and go on a cruise from UK but looking forward to it even more after seeing your video thank you again and stay safe
Beautiful places, great adventure, good job Patrick!
