    I just did this on a friend excacvtor we went with valvoine lub in the bag. A tip, put the oil in warm space b4 trying to fill thee final gear on a cold day. It makes pouring the oil much easier.

    I put a pipe fitting with a tube on it in the hole and then run it to the bottom. it cuts down on the mess You can pull a vacuum on it to get as much old oil out.

    Well done sir! Good attention to details, as usual. I can see you are a good user of the toothbrush! They come handy for that purpose. This is great you cleaned the threads both sides before you apply the sealant. I saw you had your beam reinforced with gussets. You are much more meticulous with paint than I am... I don't prime! And most of the time, I am satisfied with a single coat! (I am lazy...). Ready for the storm? Thanks for sharing!

    As another poster wrote I add a little bit of Diesel fuel to liquify the oil a bit and then blow out the remaining with compressed air, it's impossible to get every last drop but that will allow you to get nearly everything (probably more then is necessary).

    • @JohnFrancoNH
      @JohnFrancoNH  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really dont see the need. Draining it will get 99% of the oil out of there. Thanks for watching!

    Hi John, Thank you for addressing this commonly ignored service item on final drives. This oil needs to be checked regularly on all planetary drives. Good practice is to check at every oil change. Also good to inspect the oil as it comes out to notice any presence of metal like you did. If you see flecks in the oil you can rinse the oil cavity with diesel fuel to get all that metal out of there. Then put high quality oil back in. It would be good if manufacturers would put magnetic drain plugs on these drives so metal can be more effectively removed and monitored. What do you do with the ripper tooth, remove stumps?

    • @JohnFrancoNH
      @JohnFrancoNH  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes i agree about about the magnetic drain plugs. If i still see tiny metallic particles next time around. I will have insert my own magnet just past the hole to help collect them. I should of flushed it with fresh oil, i had plenty. Hoping next time its much warmer so the oil flows easier. Thanks for watching!

      @davidmorse8432 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnFrancoNH That's a great idea about flushing with oil. You might also run a little while and change again until metal flecks are less noticeable. Small flecks looking like glitter are pretty common but if you see bigger chunks, better tear it down and inspect before it destroys something major. I almost tore mine up but decided to tear it down and found some little needle bearings had failed. Easy fix if you catch it early. Planetary drives are pretty easy to dismantle. I was a little hesitant to do it myself at first but it wasn't too difficult. If you have something wrong, it just won't go back together. What causes failure usually is lack of lubrication. Oil leaks out of the inside seal and the cavity runs dry because it is such a small amount of oil in there. People don't check this often enough and that is a problem. It's so good that you put a spotlight on this because even a small planetary can run into the thousands to replace.

    KX040 calls for the final drive oil to be changed in the first 50 hrs of use, then every 500 hrs. Gear oil is very cheap compared to final drive replacement. The torque spec for the plug in the WS manual is 49-58.1 Nm or 36.1 -43.4 ft-lb

    How much weight do you plan to move around with the forks?

    • @JohnFrancoNH
      @JohnFrancoNH  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, i do not plan on lifting anything more then 2500 lbs. Anything more then that out 12ft from center and the machine will tip or become very unstable. Forks are very stiff and so is the ibeam since i have had gussets. Lifts my firewood pallets/bins with no flex or issues. And they weigh in at 2000 lbs. Thanks for watching!

    Why don’t you change the oil right after you’ve run it while the oil is still warm?
    Was the oil leaking out of the drain ports to start with?

    • @JohnFrancoNH
      @JohnFrancoNH  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it was very cold that day and i had no projects planned. So i went ahead and drained anyways when i was changing my truck oil. I agree it would flow easier after a day of work. but no oil was leaking from the plug screws. The face plate is always bone dry. I wanted to add the thread sealant just because the kubota service manual indicates to do so. Thanks for watching!

    Are all three drain plugs the same size on your machine. Reviewing WSM page IV-S-168 diagram shows center plug as G 3/8, with oil drain ports as G 1/2. All 3 plugs on mine are same size.

    Hey John, I just found and subscribed to your channel. Great content, and I'll be bingeing on your videos the next few days.
    I just bought the same excavator (used) and have a question. I won't get the machine until Thursday, and was wondering if everything on the machine is metric, as far as bolts, nuts, hydraulic line fittings, and so forth. I was an aircraft mechanic, so I never had a need for metric wrenches and sockets. Thanks!

    John I am new to your channel and enjoy your videos. I am looking at a used KX-121 she has 5k hrs on it, engine and drives seems ok I plan on light work on my property. Any advise would greatly be appreciated as to what to look for on a used machine. 👍🙂

      Thats alot of hours...mines has about 1300 on it. just ask for service receipts and check the arm for worn out bushing and pins. if the bucket flops around the bushings are junk. Thanks for watching!
