When I saw this title on my feed I thought it said “How to STEAL oil pastels” and I was like “this is a thing?” 😂
😂😂😂 after I read this I was like - oh no, did I type that?!?
Believe you me I too read the same thing 😂 n then I saw this comment 😂
Sandi would make that a lot of fun!
When you deal with that Caran'dAche set - stealing is on the table.
I love your artworks. Can you tell some about how to store oil pastels artwork? How to Mounting it for hang on wall or for sale?
I have been using hairspray to seal the oil pastel paintings. But one day I guess I had a bright moment, so I tried using my heat gun over a oil pastel sketch. And boy it was great 🤯 The oil pastels melted, and now I can close my sketch book without any smoshiness anywhere 😃😃 This made it SO MUCH EASIER!
Really?!?!? Hmmmm - wonder if a hair drier would do the same thing?
Yes It does. I tried with a hair dryer, too. If it is a thick layer with oil pastels, I have done the drying process in a couple of rounds. If you hold it in the right angle you see the oil pastel melt. Then wait a second until it is cold again 😊
@@Alice_in_artsupply_hoarderland I’m gonna give it a try!!!!! 🤗
❤😂I use hairspray too
That sounds like a really interesting experiment. I’ll be trying it! Thanks!
I was wondering how to seal oil pastels so I'm grateful for your experimentations - also great entertainment! I absolutely love your flower painting with the blue background - stunning!
So glad it was helpful Helen and thank you!
@@sandihester Hi Sandi! Did you use a high-end hair spray or the most basic one? Just curious (I want to give it a try and don"t want to buy the "wrong" product 😁 Thanks ❤ !!!
@@beautybug1831 cheap!
@@sandihester 😂😂😂 Thanks!
Hi Saindy I would like you to show
the way you perfect soft pastel drawing, please!?
The best tip of the episode….Twirling to dry fixative. You must crack Grady up every day. Thanks for your time and sharing your talents.
We do get a lot of laughs!!!
Sandi Hester Fridays.!! The BEST
🤗 I’m so glad you feel that way!!
Can’t begin to describe what your work and videos have done to me. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You’re truly awesome
I’m glad to hear that you’ve been enjoying the channel and getting something from it!
Sandi you’re a breath of fresh air 😊
I have used hairspray on my oil pastels and it has worked very well. Usually about 3 to 4 layers and the colours come up beautifully.
Thanks. For sketchbooks I don’t want more expensive fixatives. Going to get the hairspray for that.
Aeresol hairspray, I assume?
@@suew4609I’m thinking so, as well..
I can’t tell you how happy I am that you made this video! I have wanted to experiment with oil pastels, but have held off due to the lack of them curing. Now I can play! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
You’re so welcome Jo Anne!
LOL you holding your breath and running away from where you just sprayed- I've been there many times HAHA!!!!!! I think I can hold my breath longer since I have been doing this 🤪. You were cracking me up with the spinning on the porch. I spray just inside my garage and run away and my neighbors must think I am totally nuts!
Hello Sandi from Paducah Ky. Not too far down the road. Lol. You are a treasure! I'm so thankful for your videos. I just discovered your channel a few months ago. Couldn't have come at a better time as I'm trying to get back into my art. I love your work!! Wow! And your attitude is infectious!!
Well hey neighbor!!!! Thank you for your kind words!!!! I hope the videos can give you continued inspo for getting back into your work!
I really like the painting hanging behind you against the red doors of the trees around the pond with the blue jetty
Thank you! It’s a work I’m progress for over my fireplace
Yes! I would like to see that one up closer and the more muted indoor picture at the top left of your living room display. I love interior paintings, like Bonnard!
Oh I love both of the large floral paintings equally well. The cobalt blue background is wonderful. They really look stunning on your green wall. Your home is beginning to look like a gallery... but so warm and cozy. Love your videos.
Well, thank you Linda!! 🥰
Very Mattisse. Lived this video. ❤🎨

Sandi you are so gosh darn cute! every time I see one of your videos I just giggle , your so free and child like, I aspire to be like you.
Your great total bonkers but a heart of an artist really enjoyed watching this
That's a hilarious one, Sandi. Jogging, yoga and drawing preservation combined. :-)
Girl, you too funny. Love the twirling and I like knowing I'm not the only one being creative at such things. Girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. I favor the blue background, but on your wall, the darker color definitely stands out more. The flowers are lovely. Thank you for the experiments. Helps out a lot.
Glad it was helpful (and funny) Wilma! Thank you!

That pop of blue flower painting is absolutely gorgeous! Another incredible relaxing and happy video as always Sandi
Thank you so much!
Sandi, thank you for this video. I did learn a lot and needed your enthusiasm. I Have varnish but have yet to use it. I really enjoyed the conversation and your uplifting humor. The flower paintings were/are beautiful! Xxx
Me, too! Vanish and gels, along with other fixatives and sealers, and Mod Podge!
Thanks for this one, Sandi. I love my Sennelier oil pastels but have never been brave enough to experiment with fixatives to protect them. BTW as you have been developing your skills and techniques your work has become even more beautiful. I love your channel.
Awe - thank you!!!! I’ve seen the growth too!
you are such a fun, beautiful talented woman !! i love your videos & art. u always give me a good laugh thank you Sandi 💞💞
Thank you so much!
Oh thank you so much Sandi! I am also so glad about the hairspray. Sometimes it is very hard to find some of the wonderful art supplies you are using in South Africa. So I am definitely getting hairspray! And I love both of the flower paintings, so filled with happiness! Thank you so much for this helpfull video. You are a star!! Blessings to you!
Awe - thank you! Yes, hairspray is a supply that you should be able to get anywhere - that's kind of funny though, isn't it?!?! Thank you for your kind words!
Love learning about the oil pastels. thank you this video was so good and make me laugh . I look forward to seeing your videos on Fridays. So excited I was able to get accepted into the Spring workshop today. I have been painting in acrylics for 2 years this month. My dad is my biggest art supporter he helped me set up my studio at home with my lighting A hand made easel and drawing desk. I emailed him that I have been accepted into the Penn studio school of art!!
Angie, I'm so excited you'll be in the workshop!!! That's so exciting!
oh awesome video. I needed this as I am just starting with oil pastels and had this exact question (Sennelier Oil Pastel fixative on its way). I loved the spin and dry method; you looked like you were having a lot of fun!
Perfect!!! Love your choice of colors and how your paintings are displayed in your home!!
Thank you Paula!
I'm new to oil pastels and found this video through the search bar. You seem so happy and energetic that I couldn't not get my things and do a painting. I showed the part of you running and spinning while spraying the fixative to my boyfriend, too and it was so funny. You're awesome!
So glad it gave you both a laugh!
Another great Friday with Sandi. I'm going to pull out my inexpensive oil pastels and test them out. They've been sitting in a drawers for a few years now. I agree with you about breaking the sticks, they don't feel precious then. I love the hand made journals you showed. Your flower paintings are beautiful and they look great on your green wall. Thank you for sharing your experiments.
So glad you enjoyed it Marci!!!! Let me know what you think of the inexpensive oil pastels!
I don’t paint with oils but I’m willing to watch and learn from our internet sensation artist Sandi !
😂 well, thank you Christine!
Thank you for all the testing and information and for making everything look fun and play. I am so inspired by your work and take on art making. Greetings from the Netherlands
Wow - all the way from the Netherlands!!!! I bet it’s beautiful there!
That was the best!!!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Thank you, Sandy! I feel so much more confident about using oil pastels now. 🥰
Oh good Jacqueline!!!
I'm loving your massed florals. Just a glimpse of one makes me feel happy.
Awe - thanks!
So helpful! Thank you! Your videos always make me smile and bring joy 💟😊❤🤗 I love both of the floral paintings, but I especially love the one with the blue background. Love from Scotland xxx

The flower paintings are so gorgeous! That whole collection together on the walls are just so beautiful and I really think the green walls are just the perfect backdrop of color for all your work!!

Hi Sandi! Thanks so much for sharing your test results and fly-dry technique! Last night, I started searching for “varnishing oil pastels” so was jazzed to discover this topic in your video today. I so appreciate your generous, playful and lovely spirit. The landscape painting behind you at the end of video is exquisite!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fly-dry technique 😂😂😂😂 love it! The large landscape is one I’m working on for my fireplace
Bob Burridge loves to paint on paper, he always takes a piece of the paints tape or something stronger and sticks the paper to the table so he can work without it moving all around 😊figured maybe you knew but wanted to share, I have learned so much from you both, have bit been able to create/practice but I look forward to it. In the meantime I have enjoyed coming to live and learn with you for quite a while.
Love the floral painting! Makes me want to go home and play with my art! And as a post script-/love your yellow chairs.
I’m glad it makes you want to paint!!
Thank you so much Sandi for all of your tips. Very helpful. I LOVE your new floral paintings!
Thank you Dana!!
Hi Sandi, thanks so much for this video.I love your two big floral works in your Hallway, they are really beautiful.Such a coincidence,This week I received an order of the liquitex satin varnish,I have tried it on a large abstract collage that I did using painted tissue as well as Caran dashe wax crayons,it worked a treat, and as I’d hoped it made the sharp edged look really crisp and bright the colours out too,so great success.I have the same fixative as you, haven’t used it yet as I hold back from using pastels as they don’t dryjust me being lazy I guess, but they can be soooo messy,I will definitely go with your idea of waxed paper in my books👍🏻.I love that you have moved your workstation to under the window,I have been hoping you would do that for ages, hope it’s working for you.Hugs x
Thanks Wendy! Yes, the studio needed a little adjusting - it was getting too cramped in there. Loving the new layout!
Your new studio arrangement! Airy! I wonder if your chi is flowing in a new way? Tantalizing glimpses of your decor! Anyway, now I have a renewed interest in my oil pastels. I’ve already got that varnish (it’s ‘bout to run out) and sprays. I’m fixin’ to unwrap all those oil pastels (the white crayon is ‘bout to run out). I’ve got a great evening ahead.
Ohhhhh Genie have fun- eeeee!
Thanks for a great video. Full of useful info and the kind of experimenting that maybe isn’t so affordable for everyone, but also good to see how easy it is to spray the fixative/hairspray. I cannot do this myself, but a family member could. We can make an educated guess now at what will work for us. Love your large paintings they look great. Love the abundance of everything!
Thank you Lindy!!!
I LOVE the painting with the blue background, but I also love those beautiful irises! Win win! You are such a cute little character, Sandi. I was giggling at you doing your twirling. I was thinking what neighbors would think if you lived in the city and they could see all of your antics but didn’t know what you were doing. It made me laugh.😂 Very helpful info in this video! Also, I love your long luscious curly hair. I wish mine were like that, but alas it is straight and not very thick.
Yes - I’m glad I don’t live in the city 😂😂😂 the few neighbors I do have - well, I can’t imagine what they think of what all goes in here 😂😂😂. Oh, and the mail lady sees me sometimes too 😂

I’ve just reached the part where you show the painting you don’t like. And of course, I LOVE it! Might you be posting it for sale? Reached the end of the video and edited to say I love both flower paintings but the 1st one the most. I can feel both the purple and the red flower blowing with the breeze.
Send me a screen shot of the one you like - probably for sale!
I waited eagerly for this video after last week's, and I wasn't disappointed. Thanks, Sandi! Inspired to create!!
So glad Margret!!!
Love the flower paintings! Thanks for all the great tips! Your fun!
Thank you Bonnie!
Love your experiment. Takes me back a few years before I was forced to be tethered to an oxygen tank. After all the sprays half killed me and needed to seal these babies. I had a phase of Atelier paints(acrylics). They have mediums and fixative up the wazoo. We're fortunate we'd gotten an art supply hear in the hi Desert..Yucca Valley, Ca. They started closing out 2 other locations and when my local Jack's followed suit I filled out some of my acrylics, pastels, and pan pastels. You name it from watercolor faves to well.. to the point I got the mediums that I'd wanted a 60% off. After all the sprays the non-propellant ones are the best. ATELIER UNIVERSAL VARNISH / MEDIUM! It's I believe originally out of Australia (no idea if the States carry it or what the deal is after COVID restrictions) It is the best out of many.. wipe it on in thin coats with a taklon glaze brush.. soft bristle.(let it dry thoroughly and repeat about 3-4xs. Wash out with soap and water immediately or if on site put it in a wet baggie, washed out with paint water and wrap in saran in the bag it goes till you get back to the studio. Not linked to this product,. but sharing my best and safest for your lungs. This works on everything I use so far have not tried it with ws Holbein oils cuz I had to take time off to recover from pneumonia and blood clots in my lungs. So no breathing anything caustic as oils. Sorry this is so long but we that experiment in our art with multimedia.. gotta share the results. Thank you for your shows. Also. Do you have any shows on how to make a watercolor journal out of good paper like arches. There has to be a good easy way. There are times laying in bed that I want to take it beyond my mixed media or Canson or others. But a bad day is in my way of making it back to my studio, and I have to create art to rise above the pain. When I got a great idea I want to turnout beautiful with paper that isn't fighting me. Onna
Goodness, this lady is so adorable!
Love the paintings on the wall above the swatches…AND the florals 💕…fave? Blue background.
I love the blue one too! Thank you!
Hey sandi! You made me laugh with your spray 😂. Your flowers are both great, maybe I prefer the second ones for the softness, but the first ones are so powerful with the blue.
Score! Love giving laughs!
I’m usually sealing stuff at night so I do it in the basement, I spray, hold my breath and then run upstairs. 😂
@@aprilbrown8081 wow - be careful running up those stairs!!! That sounds way more dangerous!!
Running is pretty much the only way I go up any stairs, so it’s all good. 😂
I honestly have no plans to seal oil pastel in my own life, but I happily hung out with you while working in my sketchbook just because I love your personality and your gorgeous studio. 🥰🤩👍🖌
You crack me up!
Awesome video … just found this and it’s so much fun but helpful too. Did not know about hairspray as an oil pastel fixative so thank you. Not being able to fix oil pastels has always kind of put me off using them in my sketch book. Keep these fantastic videos coming Sandi.
U are one of the cutest artists ma'am! Fun silly and great teacher!

Love all your videos , this one is up there with being so informative, great spinning action on the porch too and I loved the naked neopastels- I do the same, little pieces are so much better too work with 🙂 keep being your truly wonderful self Sandy , you make my week 🙃❤️
Awe - thank you Trudi! Yes, to small pastel bits!!!
I absolutely love unpeeling and breaking my oil pastels. It helps me get past my apprehension to really use the material.
Totally agree!
@@sandihester I need to get the nerve to try that. I have a block about messing up new art supplies and sketchbooks. I'm getting better about the books but peeling new pastels would be a big step. I'm going to get some cheap oil pastels and try it.
Just discovered your channel happily. New to oil pastels so looking for any help and this was one of my first questions. Looking forward to watching more of your videos, you are delightful!
Awe - thank you Jan!

I just love this video. Watched it several times and it always gets me in a good mood no matter how ill I feel. My favorite of the big florals is the one with a dark green background. They are both beautiful but that’s my favorite.
Ohhh thank you!
Love all your methods and tips. You are funny! ✨I Enjoy listening and i often start chuckling along with you. ✨Thanks! 👏
🥰😂
I have been experimenting with oil pastels (doing a Kandinsky study) because I don't really like them. I decided to do the study to see if it is the medium or me - the conclusion is that I just need to use them more because they are such an expressive medium. Thanks for the video because I have been wondering how to preserve the paintings if I like the result. Love your channel! 💜
So glad you found it helpful! Thank you!
Well first, I’d like to officially say hi! This is my first comment. I’ve just recently discovered your channel after another artist referenced it in her vlog and I was immediately captivated, soon thereafter I became just obsessed and then binged every single video you’ve ever made, lol. Then when I finished them last week I was like oh no! No no no, this will not do! You mean now I have to wait each week like a peasant (as my teen would say) to see another?! Lol
And so I waited a whole week to see this one, and get my Sandi fix, watched it and went oh no, now I have to wait a whole other week to see another ?! Lol. I think you’re starting to get a glimpse at the level of my new obsession now, lol. Well, it’s not my fault that you’re adorable and inspirational and give out good practical advice to boot. I just selfishly wish there were a few more of yous to go around so I could just watch your great videos like all day if that’s the type of mood I was in you know.
But Alas, I digress , to answer your question about our favourite of the two flower paintings , mine is without a doubt the one with no blue. I loved it so much in fact that I went ahead and tried to copy your style from that painting onto this ugly old beige lampshade I have. Now it’s much prettier thanks to you ! I’ve been wanting to cover that up somehow for years but had a lack of inspiration for it but when I saw that beautiful flower painting it just clicked and I just had to do it. I certainly hope that’s ok. If not I’d for sure paint over it with something else.
Anyway , thank you for your videos and for goodness sake keep on making them please! Love love love, obsessed! Hihihi!
Welcome to the Peasant Club! I too now anxiously wait every single week for another Sandi video.
WELCOME! I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos that much - I really appreciate your kind words and I'm sorry you now have to wait a week :). I bet your lamp shades look amazing!

I bought some deli paper at Costco which works great for popping between pages to prevent smearing or unwanted transfers. I like that it’s precut and I can use sheets over and over before they finally get so ragged they have to be replaced. Also, Sandi, I love how you pronounce “oil” which is how I say it, too (I grew up in Louisiana). After nearly 30 years of marriage, my husband still teases me about it! 😂 Thanks for sharing your skills and know-how! Lotsa love from Oregon! - Tara Kate
Tara - what a GREAT idea with the deli paper!!!! I’m not a member of Costco - wonder if I can get it at Walmart? Love that it’s precut!!!
@@sandihester I’ll bet you can find it at Walmart. It’s so nice to just pull out a few pieces and they’re all stacked and so easy to work with. And if you’ve never painted on it, it also makes fun collage paper. The possibilities are endless!

This was such an enjoyable video! It was a real birthday treat to see this over the weekend. There’s something so accessible about pastels that I really love. My young students have really enjoyed experimenting with pastel landscapes this year. 😊
So glad you enjoyed it Mich and happy birthday!!!!! 🤗
It's always a joy on my Saturday morning to watch and listen to you. I use baking paper to go on top of my glitter gel pen drawings. I stick the baking paper on the back of the previous pages, and then the glitter doesn't rub off.
So I'll try the fixative for a permanent option. Thanks hon.
So glad I can be part of your Saturday mornings!

Thank you so much for this video Sandi. It was very helpful and I have now ordered both the fixative and varnish.
Thank you for this helpful video. Your paintings are lovely, and so are you.
Thank you so much Sandi for the information on fixatives. I tend to gravitate towards one brand of Strathmore sketchbooks. They are coil bound watercolor paper with a layer of vellum or regular paper sandwiched in between each page. I then don't have to worry about any huge smooshing problem, and they seem to have worked well. I think the ones I have are 11X14 and 8x6 ish and are also hardbound. Thanks again!
Great tip Gilly!!!!
Now, since I shared this with my wife, she is having me clean all our wood floors with the Murphy's floor soap
Thanks alot
Your flower paintings are gorgeous and look amazing on your green wall. Thanks for the tips. I can't run so won't be trying the fixative lol. I did like the varnish. Do you think clear gesso would work? Sandi I hope you feel better soon.
Clear gesso would work but you’d still need to use fixative first I think. But just do a little lest and see
I just done an acrylic artwork with oil pastels and I found you. Thank you so much 💖🙏🏼 I have the sprays and all and I’m like you with the holding the breath and running away 😆🧡you’re so cute!

I would never remove the labels or break them. I baby my Caran D'ache neocolor 1 & 2. But I love watching your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Turned out wonderful!
Dear Sandi, I love your art! Thank you so much for sharing your techniques. In Argentina to seal oil pastels we use vinilic glue (Elmer's or national label) or Elmer's clear glue (but prefer the vinilic one) with a smooth brush 1 layer. Love all your videos. You inspire me! Suscribed.
Great tip!
I'm really loving these flower paintings.
Thank you!!!
Not me coughing in real life when the spray followed her! 😂😂😂 side note: i love her quirky artistic methods
Thank you for your tip on sealing your work. When I am sealing my pastels work, I use clear can spray that they use to color bicycles. It’s acrylic spray. I hold my breath too and run 😊 and fan the surface like you did between layers. But I usually leave it outside for about 15 minutes
good tip Dawn!
Hi, good video, I use a mask fp2 and put the pictures in a big box so you can close it and avoid run and damage de ozono layer.😉
I absolutely love your flower paintings! I can only dream of painting as loose as you do. Do you have any videos that take you through the process of making one of your paintings? I would love to see one. And I can’t seem to find anything on your background, ie., what area you live in, how long you’ve been painting, do you have any schooling, when did you start selling paintings and how?
Sandi is so cute, funny and entertaining 😄
Oh and informative.
Thank you Julie!
Wondering how matte medium after the spray fixative over the oil pastels would work. No smell. No shine. I'll be giving it a go as well as the heat gun method others have mentioned. Thank you for sharing Sandi. Always appreciate your delivery! Peace.
Wow 😊😊 amazing watch . You are such a great enthusiast, mad lovable artist. One question 🙋♀️ as I’m very very new to oil pastels , I will want to frame them up ,I know if I put them into a boxed frame the glass won’t touch them ,however if I use the fixative spray should they be ok touching the glass ? Thank you again for making me lol .💖💐

Love the flower paintings!💖
Thank you!!!
I love those flower paintings!! I think if they were in my home I wouldn’t necessarily put them next to each other personally, because I see one as more warm toned and the other as more cool toned. Definitely would love the pair but would put them in different rooms depending on where they fit best!
I love your big floral canvases. They are just gorgeous. They’re so vibrant and beautiful and loose. They remind me a little bit of Australian artist Margaret Olley’s work, which I also love.
Ohhh thank you!!! Big compliment!
I love your hair! And of course, your art! 🥰
Thank you!!!
I learned so much from this one video. Thank you!
Another great video. Re: Sennelier oil pastel fixative - Have you tried it on multiple brands of oil pastels (including Sennelier) and if so, does it perform about the same for all? I read somewhere that it only works on Sennelier, which seems plausible, but perhaps it is only that it works the best on Sennelier. I think you’re showing Caran d’Ache and it seems to work pretty well. My observation - I have used it just once, on a Sennelier oil pastel “painting” (on gessoed paper, with thick impasto in areas) and applied multiple (4 or 5) thin coats, and it worked amazingly well. But the end result was very glossy, like it had a hard glossy vinyl coating. I definitely applied the fixative evenly and interestingly, in small areas where there was no oil pastel, it was pretty much matte, Where there was oil pastel, it was glossy. I framed it with no spacers between the glazing and artwork, and it hasn’t had problems. I recently had to take the painting out of the frame (to remove a hair…) and it came right out, although there was the sort of dry “stickiness” of the sort that occurs when two dry acrylic-painted surfaces touch and then are separated.
It works on other brands and even on wax pastels
@@sandihester Hi Sandi! So regarding eaahearn's comment about after using the fixitive on the oil pastels, the painting was very glossy. I don't like a glossy finish on artwork, so I'm wondering if putting a matte varnish over the fixitive once it's dry, would that make the finished painting have a matte finish?
@@pamzavada5269 probably but I can’t say for sure - you’d just have to give it a try
Thank you! I've been avoiding my oil pastels because of the smooshing. I will dig them out and give them another go 👍
Awesome!!!!
