There can never be enough videos of you. And of course there can never be enough videos about color and value. It’s a subject that I doubt anyone has ever gotten around to mastering. Thank you for all these wonderful lessons.

Hi Sandi, I am a 76yr old novice and to start with I wasn’t getting this value etc stuff, but then when you demonstrated it the haha bells rang. I’ve been enjoying your videos for quite a while and have learned so much. I started just art journalling 1st Jan 2016, and now find myself expanding into the full art field and it’s so big and sooooo exciting. Love Trills, in NZ. 😊❤

You really clarified some things for me in this video (and your last one with the swatching). Don't let the negative comments get you down. I know that's easier said than done. Just always remember that some of the greatest artists had critics. Van Gogh didn't sell a single piece while he was alive, and your pieces hang in people's homes right now!

Hi Sandi! There is a landscape artist called Clarice Beckett who was a master of value. She followed a school of painting run by someone called Max Meldrum, where they were all taught to squint at the subject and place absolute priority on getting the values right. Value was prioritised ahead of colour or detail. There was a whole system to it which is really interesting to look up. Her paintings are absolutely beautiful . There is an amazing story to her as well, because her paintings they were almost lost because her family stored them all in a hay barn open to the weather, and they were only discovered recently. Her father thought her paintings were rubbish and wouldn’t let her have a studio, so she had to paint everything plein air. You might be interested in her! And also in the value system she followed. I keep intending to try it out. As always, I LOVE your videos and thank you so much for your hard work, generosity and warmth. It’s always a dose of happiness to watch your videos! 🥰💕

Do you Pay thousands of dollars and have to deal with parking and getting to and from and being in debt to go to university to learn all this art information OR have a wonderful teacher like Sandy, who is a wealth of knowledge and lovingly shares her information for free that you can sit down in the comfort of your own home, or wherever you want to be even in your pyjamas, or your art room with a fur baby and a coffee or if you’re disabled like myself can snuggle up in bed with a heat pack and a fur baby and enjoy a similar education, but one that makes a lot more sense and is not overwhelming but is down to earth and broken down into chunks and explained perfectly I think I’ll take the latter approach. Thank you Sandy.

I thought I’d write to mention that since at the end the video you mentioned that some comments made you sometimes think about stopping to make videos and I was like nooooooo!!! lol they’re not talking badly to my Sandi!! Tell me who they are!! lol I know it might be easier said than done but try to not let those blobety blob comments make you think of stopping because you have super fans who anticipate your videos like nobody’s business. I’ve watched and loved every single one of them and have rewatched many over and over and I needs my Sandi fix, you hear? lol 💗
Thank you for that - I know lots of you watch and are so kind - I hate that a few bad comments can get me down but they do at times - not all the time but when you work so hard at something and then people don’t listen well and blast you it does hurt

They don’t listen properly then rudely ask endless questions that are already answered in the video, ask things they could easily Google themselves, never say please or thank you, or else just write something nasty. I can imagine how infuriating it must be but it’s best to zone them out. This is my first time seeing one of your videos and, as so many others have commented, I have enjoyed it immensely and learned so much from it. I don’t blame you, it’s hard to completely tune out the negative comments, they’re usually the ones that just stay with you and boop up randomly in your head when you think you’re over them. Like you say, especially hurtful when it’s something you’re putting so much of yourself into.
Those kinds of people should just lose their licence to type! lol
We definitely need more people like you, spreading kindness, beauty and cheer into this world! Not more poopy heads, there’s enough of those. lol

You have also inspired me to loosen up my overly 'tidy' style. As a tight painter, this is a real challenge and I laugh at myself when I find myself naturally getting fussy. Today I’ve followed your values mixing video and this one and I’m blown away at how much I underestimated this skill. It’s made me look at all my work and now I understand why on some pieces I just could find that finished sweet spot. I had the values all in the mid, especially watercolours and glazing. I struggle with thumb nails and planning, it was something Liz Steele loves doing and I struggled with it because I'm a detail/perfectionist my brain scrambles. You managed to demystify it for me. A amazing lesson on value - I have had such a hard time understanding this concept and putting it into practice. This video along with the first has helped me begin to grasp what value means, and how it should be used when creating. I especially like your walk through of other artists work and the practical approach you showed in your demonstration. Sandi! I took so many notes during this! Fantastic. I went back and took black and white photos of some of my paintings that just didn’t seem right-and guess what? - I had the values wrong-too much dark values which caused the mind to not know what was the focal point! Thank you so much as always for those “nuggets” of wisdom that are (I think) are just assumed that everyone knows.

I've been making art for a long time, but I often still find myself getting stuck in the "mids." This was an immensely refreshing and important lesson!
(PS: Charles Reid is SO SO SO good. My high school art teachers gave me his "Figure Painting in Watercolor" book as a graduation gift back in 1995, and to this day I still reference it.)

I saw a movie recently about the folk artist Maude Lewis. Really beautiful story. It made the film festival rounds years ago and I just got around to viewing it over the winter break.

This was explained in such an intuitive way and the demo and examples were so helpful. I found myself pausing, going into my phone's gallery to look at some of my own drawings and paintings, putting the black and white filter on to help me relate what you were explaing and demonstrating to my own work: to see where I'd used value well and where I could make changes to improve. Hi Sandi, i just finished this video a 2nd time and I AM SO THANKFUL!!! I have watched/read so many info about values, but most of the time the information are presented like a "study" like school...even tho it is good but i had problems to use and transfer those "lectures" into my practice. When i'm painting, i mostly need to do quick decisions and my brain cannot switch from brainy stuff into intuitive stuff while painting.
Your video and explanation help me so much to make MY WAY of painting so much easier!
