Wonderful! Painting something like this though Marcia will really help your roses. Trust me. It is all about "seeing" can controling your brush marks for shapes. Painting animal fur is a grea way to see the contours that are needed for a rose. It is what I did! 😀

I'm just starting out painting acrylic. What type of canvas should I get? The cotton that needs the canvas to get a base coat to fill the rough surface?
Depends on the details. If you have a lot of details then use a smaller portrait weave so you don't fight the surface. I use wood panels for these animal portaits and canvas for others. Yes fill the weave for less frustration. On human portaits I allow a little weave to soften the edges.
