Soprano Diana Damrau has been performing on the world’s leading opera and concert stages for two decades. Her vast repertoire spans both lyric soprano and coloratura roles including the title roles in Lucia di Lammermoor (La Scala, Bavarian State Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House), Manon (Vienna State Opera, Metropolitan Opera) and La Traviata (La Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Opéra national de Paris and Bavarian State Opera) as well as Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte (Metropolitan Opera, Salzburg Festival, Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera House, Bavarian State Opera).

I’m grateful she had the opportunity in HER CAREER to make such a PERSONAL ARTISTIC decision. She’s a professional, y’all! She knows what she’s doing. This is art for the sake of art, and she collected a check, too!
For those who are so quick to judge...I don't think she means to add Tosca to her repertoire. She is intelligent enough to understand she can't sing this on stage in a full house. With a piano and no audience, this was the right opportunity to maybe make a dream come true.

Absolutely agree with you, people's perspectives on her are really dismissive, when she just want to try something interesting and quite new with her own art.
People need to STOP being selfish I tell you. This is a woman who doesn’t even have enough voice to sing the lightest soubrette roles. The voice has no DEPTH!!! None!!!! Queen of the Night? Are you kidding me? The minimum weight for the queen is Lucia Popp(a voice INFINITELY BIGGER with more depth than Darmrau). The proper weight for the Queen is Lilli Lehmann or even Edda Moser. In summary: DARMRAU HAS NO VOICE FOR OPERA yet she still gets rewarded with millions of dollars and this pisses me off cause she has no voice! Also I am piss that aside from getting so much money she also wants to sing stuff like Tosca only cause it is a dream? This is not an excuse!
@@beachfanatic2010 Huh? when did Diana said to sing Tosca is a dream? she's even scared to sing it because it's not part of her repertoires, she tried to challenge herself with it, and we actually know she didn't sang perfectly to be Tosca, and don't be stupid enough she only sang it once, she didn't meant to sing it in the future, she's not like Netrebko. Well it's not a problem why she's rewarded with millions of dollars, and first of all if you think she doesn't have a voice then it's your problem, she worked hard to have a voice, she even went a school to have it like the other opera singers too, and do you still want dead opera legends to be rewarded with millions of dollars? stupid right? Some of us may enjoy Diana and some of us not. Stop being so ignorant to modern artists, if you are stick to old school, stick with old school.
@@la.luminosa Ignorant me? DARMRAU doesn’t even have enough voice to sing in any solid operatic choir let alone to sing anything written for the lightest voices. WHY IS SHE SINGING OPERA WITHOUT A VOICE? She is singing with a piano and she cracked 2 times on the lightest part of the role. This is FARRRR from true operatic singing. FARRRRRRR! Shame on this mosquito larva.

So beautiful, but very different in the voice of a coloratura. It's another area...kkkkk. It's the Queen of the Night singing at home, for fun and for the enchantment of her neighbors. Love her.
Except Damrau was NEVA EVA a real coloratura. She is at best a soubrette but without enough voice to even be classified as a soubrette.
Y'all can fach off 😄 it's a beautiful piece, it meant something for the artist, let her express herself. Think that it's an art song!
I think the most important thing is that she gave herself the opportunity to perform this aria.

It's not about her not having a big enough voice..the sound is too bright, cold sounding...this needs warm golden voice
yeh yeh yeh, when she screeches in Queen of the Night, you guys also jump out and say her voice is so "dramatic". Now she is suddenly "too bright". 🙄

Puccini and Mozart are completely different with Puccini being more dramatic and emotional. The voice often must sing through the orchestra.
Again, I think she is the best modern queen of the night. Dramatic presence, cold tone, and I like the weight of her voice in that.
I know she no longer has the top notes and so now maybe she is starting to venture into verismo..and she just needs to adjust and find her place in lyric/spinto territory.

Diana Damrau is far more of a Mimi than a Tosca. Though her efforts were valiant as always, this aria, let alone Tosca, was not and will never be for her.

Her voice is not suited to for this character. Don't criticize her before seeing her der Hölle Rache performance. She's also german, so she'll have trouble with the pronunciations
