Awww...made me feel rather melancholy listening to Gene and Marty...imagining Clarence accompanying as I listened. I miss Clarence White immensely, but am thankful to Marty for keeping Clarence's guitar alive.

Just such a beautiful performance, Gene sings so well and Marty had his back for the whole performance..

Marty Stuart is 61 today-he's playing Clarence, the guitar he bought from Clarence White's widow. The guy singing,Gene Parsons,[no relation to Gram] was in my favorite version of the Byrds-i have all of their music and all of Gene's solo stuff, too. He and Clarence White built the Stringbender that he put on this, the first guitar they ever did-he has a machine shop in Casper,Ca.,which in between Mendocino and Fort Bragg,Ca.If you look closely, his guitar has a Stringbender on it too.The song was written by the late, great Verne Gosden-he was known as The Voice. The Mystic Theater, where this took place, is in Petaluma,Ca.,which is north of SF on 101.

This is the first song Gene sang lead on for a Byrds album, in this case, "Ballad Of Easy Rider" with a pic of his father on the cover with an old hardtail Harley from the 30's(?).
Marty is playing Clarence's Telecaster with the prototype "PARSONS-WHITE" B-string bender!

And Gene built that first B-Stringbender for Clarence. Good to see him still alive after all the losses from this wonderful band.

    Lyrics
There must be someone I can turn to
    Someone like me, lonely too
All my life I've been alone, got no friends, got no home
And there must be someone I can turn to
Well all my so called friends have turned their backs on me
They were lookin' for someone I just couldn't be
Let them go and have their fun, unaware of the harm they've done
And there must be someone I can turn to
Now if all the tears that I should have cried are still inside me
Why can't a man be accepted for what he has to be
Must I live my whole life through not knowin' what to do
Oh there must be someone I can turn to
Turn to, turn to, turn to
Oh there must be someone I can turn to
Turn to, turn to, turn to

  • @danoblue

Gene Parsons is a very talented musician and, although I'm no expert, a good musical engineer as well. While Clarence White's role as lead guitarist has been amply and justifiably praised, Parsons was key to White's virtuosity by inventing the B-bender mechanism. He was also a fine banjo player with the Byrds, and arranged the original version of Jesus is Just All Right. As a songwriter, he's a mixed bag (Gunga Din was his best Byrds song), but as a harmony singer he was fine--you can hear how the band missed him when he was replaced by John Guerin, who didn't sing at all. Nice to hear this version with both Gene and Marty.

@Nick Dauphinais: It's Gene Parsons, not "Parson's". And it's The Byrds' song, NOT "Byrd's" song.

  • @jeffjcool1600

Gram was an overrated junkie with a couple songs, got to wasted to perform, The Stones booted him out of their sessions because he wouldn't leave their recording sessions, told him to get back to his own band or shit..... Hillman, Gene, McGuinn, Clarence, Skip Batten, real talent.....

Agree, he’s been made out to be a demigod. Though very talented, he was always chasing stardom. And didn’t care who was in his way. Mick Jagger saw right through him.

What are you talking about? He's exactly on key. He doesn't quite hit the mic every time, and the recording is picking up way more of Marty, but there's nothing wrong with Gene's vocals. They sound EXACTLY like they did in 1969.

It's not a music school recital ! It's some iconic musicians , playing from the heart .I had an older millwright in my crew , who , when others came up to the job we were doing , and started putting us down , would say , quite simply " Any fool can criticize . " Just sayin' No offense intended .

Its not a great performance, but its a pretty good one. Gene was/is a great musician and aside from the music his invention of the b bender a forever legacy.
