I always wash the mushrooms thoroughly and get all the dirt off. Then I dry them on a paper towel for a few minutes before I use them. I have never had any issues.
I think that mushrooms do absorb water, when cooked they turn out to be rubbery.

Actually washing them will also keep them dirty. As mushroom act as a sponge. So if we wet them directly they will absorb water along with dirt and other things.

Never experienced mushrooms getting swollen with water !! Also the best way to wash fruits & vegetables without bruising these is soak these in a water mixed with turmeric (Haldi) & Salt, then rinse

Then i cut and put in water and add salt (even mushroom has salt and water)
Then i squeeze and finally i fry
