I've heard this piece performed by many wind orchestras but this is definitely the best performance ever. This wind ensemble is way above other groups. It is on a different level!
There is a least one nod to Claude T. Smith's Joyance in this piece. Our concert band performed Joyance at KMEA in Wichita 1978-79 Pittsburg State University Concert Band under the direction of Dr. Gary Corcoran, Director of Bands. Rest in Peace dear man. I miss you very much! I will always hold you in the highest regard!❤ Co-1st chair alto saxophone with Eddie Foxhall Rest in Peace Eddie!
I just love how enthusiastic everybody is when playing this piece. Seeing them move, especially in moments of climax or dynamic swelling, makes it look like they're having a blast performing this!
I had all of the Euphonium solos when we played this in high school. But we didn't have strings so I was the only one playing. Scared the crap out of me
Words can't describe how outstanding this wind orchestra wow I wish my high school wind ensemble was this good. This is what makes me want to achieve a higher level of musicianship great performance!
I LOVE THIS PIECE ❤❤ I love how its joyful, energetic, aventurus, curious, and emotional I love the way they played it with so much emotions. I love the way they moved, they were really feeling the music beautiful job ❤❤❤
Well done! Haven't heard this piece in probably 20 years. I'm happy to have been part of an American group that performed this in Moscow in '96. (Side note: I don't think I've ever seen so much movement by players - they're all bobbing and weaving. Perhaps that comes from what our director said was the Lawrence Welk-inspired sections?)
8:46 oops timpani player came in a couple beats early lol, we'll consider the bells player an audio sync issue. Seriously though WOW! This sounds amazing, I've heard a lot of recordings this, and this is top tier. I think I like this version even better than Tokyo Kosei's. James Barnes would be proud.
I notice that TWO has Cello and Double bass. Is this common in France? I saw Double bass in Wind Ensemble before but it is my first time to see Cello part. Anyhow, this is indeed impressive version of Symphony Dance.
No it's pretty rare in France, I think we are very few wind orchestra to play with cellos. In Spain and Portugal it's more common. But Barnes wrote Symphonic Overture with cellos ! Here is a typical Spanish wind orchestra with more than 100 musicians (and cellos) th-cam.com/video/m6AdATxAG8E/w-d-xo.html
What an amazing performance!!! May I ask how are the clarinets seated? I notice the orchestral winds seating, but how do you split the clarinet parts? If you don't mind me asking! :)
Thanks! In the middle of the orchestra you have the solo clarinet and the first 2nd clarinet. Then 3 1st clarinet / 3 2nd clarinet / 3 3rd clarinet / We did like that because we played "Rhapsody in blue" in the same concert and we wanted the orchestral winds seating for this piece.
+Toulouse Wind Orchestra thank you for the response!! Would certainly be interesting to try this seating out sometime! Thank you for the wonderful music! Looking forward to more performances!!!
I think they have Rhapsody in Blue at the same half-of-the-concert, they are not changing seating due to logistic concerns. The RiB arrangement is very close to the 1942 Grofe orchestration, eg the difference in tutti clarinets (more or less as violins) vs soli clarinets (the 2 solo clarinets in an symphonic orchestra).

Thank you for your comment :)
I'd have to agree! This group is fantastic! And giving real focus, passion, and attention to a piece like this is what we need more of.

高校生活最後のコンクールで演奏した曲。生涯の思い出になる曲だろうなぁ。。ほんといい曲。。
9:24 Wow. The hornist synchronized their page flipping! So cool
When you have just one chance, you take it :D!
That's probably the only fun part for the horns in this piece....
Love James Barnes! Fellow Kansan!
チェロをパートとしてちゃんといれた編成だと、この曲の持ち味がすごく上がる感じがして感動。大好きな曲でたくさん聴いてきたけど、素敵な演奏を見つけた。
Brilliant perfornance!Bravo!
冒頭一発目のトランペットで心が奪われた!
演奏会場のせいもあるのだろうけれど、音の響きが華やかでセクシー! フランスっぽい!
Bravo!
The sax solo make my tear drop.
Best version I could find on youtube, perfect balance of musicianship, a great venue, and a great recording. Love it.
This orchestra is soooo goood 🎉

Why are you not active as an orchestra to have such formation? I think yourst is formation extremely near the "orchestra".
yourst→yours
Hi, we just respect the instrumentation requested by J.Barnes I think, nothing more. He wrote this piece for a big orchestra
I think they have Rhapsody in Blue at the same half-of-the-concert, they are not changing seating due to logistic concerns.
