The best thing about AFM DoD is taking it all the way out of the engine, not simply shutting it off. It also provides a excellent excuse to add a better cam, larger injectors and a supercharger or turbo!
Completely understand Matt's frustration with the wiring on that Camaro. I've had to fix multiple "geniuses" attempts at wiring up stock systems, performance systems, and systems that didn't even belong. Those are the times you just want to duck tape the person to a chair and have Elmer fudd slap the crap out of them. Because even he knows better.
The reason I always hated cylinder deactivation was that it's hugely inefficient from both a valvetrain and bottom end perspective. You shut down those cylinders but then you have dead weight in the rotating assembly that you still have to move. That means the other cylinders are now doing more work than normal which requires more fuel. So basically, like Fran alluded to, it's a corporate gimmick used to get around CAFE standards but doesn't work in the real world.
So not true. My 18 2ss on highway on touring mode gives me 35 mpg. I drove from NY to VA 2 times back and fourth. And the car only consumed half the tank. I drive in NY from Queens to Manhattan or queens to NJ and I loose half a tank in 1.5 to 2 days. Just making those short trips.
@@JsBlazIN I understand, but you didn't do a comparison of that same trip without deactivation. I know guys with cars running factory cam profiles or similar making around 500 whp that get over 30 mpg hwy with the right tune. You might eek out a few more mpg but it's not worth the loss in around town mpg.
Interesting on 2015 Camaro SS LS3, sport mode , rev limiter 5800, top speed 141, drive mode down shift to 3rd and accelerate rev limiter is now 6300 and top speed 155 and a cute little sign appears telling you , you have reached top speed. Crazy as hell.
Dodge has that same cylinder deactivation crap when you’re cruising it goes to 4 cylinders makes my car drone like crazy but if you drive the car “manual” shift the gears yourself it won’t do it
This is a older video but for anybody that wants info you can perform 1 downshift from being in 2nd in "M" manual mode on 2012 L99 auto and it will automatically turn off AFM/DOD and it will never come on again as long as you leave it in manual using paddle shift. If you move it out of "M" manual it will return to AFM/DOD until you do that again. I have a convertible 2012 L99 2SS Brembo's package with Stainless Works Retro Chambered cat back system, NGK plugs, and Moroso wires. Other than that it's bone stock including tune. @@mikehogan5087 Hello, I forgotten all about this it's a couple years old. As far as adding a k&n air filter it's still stock. I'm over 50 my wife is getting close to it. We do have big plans for the drivetrain but it's still a couple years out. It's approaching 140,000 miles and it runs great. It has just started the 10 to 20 second lifter death tap on a cold start. It's faint but it's getting time to tear the block down and get into it. I can only suggest what we are looking at it's not a race car it's a convertible and we just enjoy cruising. I am going Texas Speed all the way with their heads and cam package. The package also deletes AFM/DOD. TCI or something similar transmission with a carbon fiber driveshaft. There is a performance shop near route 66 drag strip that's going to do the whole package when we get to it. Some paint and body work to get it looking new again. I might post a video online when it's complete and we get a dyno and everything. Just keep looking on TH-cam for something a couple years out from now. Happy cruising..😎
Seeing a C6 Z06 on the dyno and hearing it go through the rpm range. Sounds so sweet especially when it hits 7K. That blue on the Camaro looks really good. Its funny how people think they will be saving tons of money by doing the work themselves and then end up having to bring it in anyway. It takes money to make power. Doing it right the first time saves you the most amount of money.
Yup. 4.6 Fords. I never put that 3rd one back in. It's insanely difficult to reach. They could have put that one bolt in reverse and it would have still been easier.

But, with the amazing skill set in your shop aaannnddd your connections to have parts made to order🤔🤔. I just wondered how much power you could ACTUALLY pull out of that forgotten middle stepchild of Chevy engines😏😎.
As a 25 year technician people need to understand just because we've done a job 100 times shouldn't have any relevance on the cost to do it. Just because we have become efficient at something we should charge them less. They should think that we have a great amount of experience with the job so they know it will be performed correctly and in a timely manner and that is what they are paying for. Just my 2 cents!
My family's old '09 Yukon XL had AFM, and one of the lifters went bad. I'm not sure which cylinder it wend bad on, but I have a feeling it was either cylinder 4 or 6. My Charger has cylinder deactivation too and I hate it. When I do a cam it will be gone, but for now if I run in sport mode, or use the ZF-8 in manual mode it doesn't kick in. There has been some speculation too that it is linked to the dropped valve seat issue some 345 hemi's have had and the very light 5w-20 oil that has to be used for the cylinder deactivation to work properly causing the lifter issues.
The amount of HEMI cam/lifter failures we've seen is insane. This is part of the reason why we now offer lifters for Gen III/IV HEMI's and just released a new line of cams for them.
