Have to say I agree: Puppets is usually esteemed as their best, but there's just something about Ride The Lightning. When you think that it was only one year after Kill 'Em All, it's pretty amazing what a leap forward it was. The title track and creeping Death alone just amazing. RTL is Kirk's most epic solo.
1. And justice for all….blackened is one of the best songs they ever wrote IMO. 2. Master of puppets….Orion helps push this album slightly past ride the lighting 3. Ride the lighting….awesome album and was my first Metallica album I ever bought. 4. Killem all….seek and destroy will never get old. 5. Black album….and nothing else matters after this album imo.
I would agree with all of this except I would have puppets and RTL switched, and And Justice For All was an all around good album. I prefer One over blackened, but there’s not a single bad song on that album
@@RuthlessMetalYT oh man... I just re-read and I just realized how my comment could come across haha!! I meant: Rank Overkill (the band) albums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry man haha
For me Master of Puppets is the best. To compare, while Raining Blood is pure thrash, MoP has a wide variety of song styles. All of them very well done. Disposable Heroes is their best song, imo.
@Raul Ramirez more that their sound evolved so much(having revolving door of members didn't hurt there),that it just comes down to different strokes for different folks
this would be very difficult and I'm sure that a lot of people would disagree with the order since the entire Death discography is absolutely phenomenal
I couldn't rank Justice lower than 3rd. As for St. Anger I'll be generous and say that there are moments on that album that I like. Moments, not songs. And the standard should be higher than that - especially for a band like Metallica. As for what else to do, start with the big 4 - lets face it, big 4 = views. Then, of course, rank OVERKILL! And Maiden, Priest, Motorhead, Sabbath, Purple, Saxon, Nevermore, Crowbar, etc.
I don't know, St. Anger gets my blood boiling that a band could even fall that far from grace. Yeah a lot of those I will probably rank sooner or later. Cheers!
I understand why Load/ReLoad are hated by so many, but I personally love them. They have more good songs than people give them credit. The production is really good, James' vocals sound amazing, and Metallica got more experimental with different instruments than in any other album they've made. Personally though, Ride the Lightning is their best. PS. If you think that Lulu is the worst album by a good band, you've never heard Prototype by Celtic Frost.
@@RuthlessMetalYT Prototype is only considered a demo because it had a limited release. Otherwise, it was a full album worth of content. 10 songs and over 45 minutes long. To me personally, it shouldn't be disqualified from a hypothetical "Worst Albums by Good Bands" list just because they only sold 30 of them.
Well to answer your first question : Because those 2 albums are bad, actually terribly bad; the guys were washed out by then; I remember an interview with ulrich at the time and he was basically saying that they had no fun anymore, and their inspiration was gone. It was bad enough actually for me, a fan from day 1 to simply quit on Metallica, now never mind, it's an opinion, that's all . I think personally that the album St Anger isn't as bad as what most people say, drums sounds terrible sure, but the raw violence of the band is definitely there. Now , thanks for the tip but I will now google Prototype from CF . I wanna hear that if this is even worst than LULU it's got to be worth it.
I was 16 when Load was unloaded to the masses. I personaly liked it a lot and still do. I like the more "introspective" take Hetfield took with lyrics on Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn and later on Reload, "Fixxxer". My mates were really into Pantera and Sepultura and Machine Head at that stage. Some enjoyed Load, others not so much! I just like the more again, deeper darker grooves in there and its got a nice mix of 70s inspired rock aswell. When listened to alongside more of its influences- anything from Sabbath, 70s Aerosmith, Danzig, Thin Lizzy- and The Black Album, it makes sense. If people hear it and instantly compare it to anything from the 80s, I dont think the album gets the chance it deserves.
@@martinberthiaume4971 "Well to answer your first question." I... didn't ask a question but ok. You didn't even answer this non-existent question either. You just said "It's bad!" and then talked about how Metallica felt. None of that is relevant to the actual quality of Load/ReLoad. James Hetfield despises his vocals from the first 4 albums, and the whole band apparently hates Escape, so by your logic they must suck as well. Load/ReLoad both sound amazing, from the tones of the instruments, to James's vocals, and the recording quality itself. They experiment with a ton of different song structures and instruments that don't appear on any other of their albums. They also feature some of their best-written songs from a lyrical perspective, including Until It Sleeps, The Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, The Unforgiven II, Mama Said, Low Man's Lyric, and Fixxxer.
I’d agree that Ride the Lightning is probably their best LP, and MOP might even rank second, BUT I think people just forget what an incredible impact Kill Em All had when it came out. Maybe many of the people commenting here just were not alive, but Kill Em All had a little buzz coming out and WOW we just hadn’t heard anything like it. Kill em All establishes the genre and you gotta admire Metallica for that despite where their fame has taken them
Iron Maiden next, please. Unless you're primarily focusing on thrash metal, in which case I would request Exodus. As for this video, I agree wholeheartedly with your three best (including the order in which you ranked them), as well as your assessment of their 90s to 2003 material. My only caveat there is that ranking Load, Reload, and St. Anger is like trying to decide which stinky horse turd is the worst. I mean, I bought the cassette single for "Until It Sleeps" before the Load album. One listen and I knew better than to waste my money on the whole album. When the cover song on the B-side was the only redeeming element on the cassette single, that was a sign that my beloved Metallica had lost their minds. Honestly, though, I actually liked both Death Magnetic and Hardwired.

In terms of ranking albums Judas Priest and Iron Maiden come to mind, the giants of trad metal. It's always interesting to see how differently people rank their albums. One's ranking could be completely different to another's. This is the thing about music, taste in it is completely subjective.
Just in case you give a damn: my Iron Maiden Top5 are: 1. 7th Son of a 7th Son 2. Somewhere in Time 3. A matter of life and death 4. Powerslave 5. Number of the Beast (Yea IK, only Bruce stuff lol) Now, Priest is a bit more difficult, as, Painkiller is their only album that I like lol
@@RuthlessMetalYT Screaming For Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith are also great albums. Some songs on those records can sound a bit glam/hair metal at times, but it's only because that whole 80s vibe is present. Turbo and arguably Ram It Down are their only glam metal efforts really. Priest's 70s output is flawless and extremely influencial to metal as we know it. My ranking best to worst is: 1. Sad Wings of Destiny 2. Stained Class 3. Killing Machine/Hell Bent For Leather 4. Sin After Sin 5. Painkiller 6. Defenders of the Faith 7. Screaming For Vengeance 8. Firepower 9. Angel of Retribution 10. British Steel 11. Rocka Rolla 12. Redeemer of Souls 13. Point of Entry 14. And justice for all If I had to make a list on the order of albums from least favorite to favorite, I couldn’t. I love each album for different moods. If I want to break shit I will listen to st. anger, justice, and kill em all, if I want to vibe I’ll listen to the black album, load, and reload, or if I want pure Cliff I will listen to ride or master.
If you took all the songs that are even remotely worth listening to from The Black Album through St. Anger, had the band spiff them up a bit, then re-record them with a good producer, you might get one halfway decent album out of it. And it would still be Metallica's worst album overall. I heard how epic "Enter Sandman" could have been when the hardcore punk band Vice Squad covered it for a punk tribute album for Metallica.
@@fzr1000981 Justice had some great songs, but some of the tracks were overly long and unwieldy; Metallica tried too hard to be prog and some songs suffered as a result. The bad mixing/production, with Jason Newsted's bass barely audible, also held this album back from being in the same category as Lightning or Puppets. Still, songs like "Blackened," "One," and "Shortest Straw" are absolute gems.

I remember getting together with two of my best friends to buy the Black Album on the day it came out. (I believe it was August 12th, 1991). Each of us bought our own copy, then we cruised in our friend's car listening to his tape. We had already heard "Enter Sandman" on the radio. While it was OK, it wasn't quite the electrifying sound we had come to expect from Metallica. Imagine our shock when it turned out to be one of the better songs on the album. Of course, in hindsight, the Black Album sounds like a Beethoven symphony compared to the dog droppings that Hetfield and company crapped out later in that decade.

My list, from worst to first (I'm going to omit Lulu since it DID include Lou Reed...) 11. St. Anger -Do I even have to explain it? I kind of can listen to Frantic and the title track as a guilty pleasure, but anything else? No way... 10. Load -King Nothing, Until It Sleeps, and Ain't My B*tch were good, but overall, this was a bigger culture shock than AJFA was to the Black Album for sure. Meh. 9. Reload -Dig the first four tracks, but I call that an EP and move on. 8. Garage INC -Everyone loved the Whisky in the Jar cover, and it was great, but I was hooked On the Road cover, and the Diamond Head cover as well. Blitzkrieg, too, was good. 7. Death Magnetic -The album that reversed the curse since 1991. It was good, but still had a flaw here or there, not withstanding some title track names, but it was progress leading into the next album. 6. Hardwired...To Self Destruct! -Pretty good album overall, for the title track, Spit Out the Bone, and some other deep cuts, and the best balls out album in 25 years. 5. Kill 'Em All -I know it's an all-time classic, but it's not my cup of tea, per say. The Four Horseman and Seek And Destroy are my favorites for sure, and I appreciate the rawness and what would become of the group. 4. The Black Album -Best selling album doesn't mean best album in the disco, but it still had great moments among the BIG hits. For every Nothing Else Matters, there was a Of Wolf and Man, for every Enter Sandman, there was The God That Failed, and for The Unforgiven, there was The Struggle Within. 3. ...And Justice For All -Despite the poor production and 1/10 bass quality (poor Jason), it's still an awesome album. From Blackened the whole way to Dyer's Eve, you'd be remiss if there was a miss on the album, plus the nod and ode to Cliff Burton will move you as well. 2. Ride The Lightning -This becomes a matter of preference, but this is close. I love both this and Master of Puppets, but the SLIGHT difference is I prefer the sound of MOP to this one, but pretty much every cut on RTL is awesome. 1. Master of Puppets -My personal favorite Metallica album. I'll play Battery as much as I'll play Leper Messiah, Orion as much as I'll play The Thing That Should Not Be. No filler on this album, and this cut is the one that meshes the sound of RTL and AJFA to a tee. Also, it's heartbreaking for being Cliff's last album. Also, I'd love to see an Iron Maiden list! ;)
You have my respect for ranking Lightning over Puppets. In fact, I wouldn't have changed a single ranking on your list. I had to subscribe after this one.

Hardwired... to Self Destruct 9. Reload 10. St. Anger Note: Death Magnetic (except for "Unforgiven 3") is the only post '80's Metallica album, along with the "Mercyful Fate" medley that can be shuffled with the first four albums seamlessly.
Death Magnetic is extremely underrated and I agree with what you said. The closest they came to the early stuff and some of James’s riffs on that album are incredible.
I've hardly even listened to Cannibal Corpse so I couldnt do them but the rest of those bands I will probably rank some day if I keep this up forever. hehe
Always underrated. Even in this list in the video. Glad I'm not the only one who ranks this high. Though probably not my #1, but certainly in my top 3. I rate it above Ride the Lightning which I feel is always rated too high. I didn't quite enjoy the sound quality of Ride the Lightning, and felt like the song writing wasn't as good as the following two albums, and wasn't as intense as Kill em' All.
#1 Master of Puppets #1 Ride the Lightning #3 …And Justice For All #4 Black Album #5 Kill ‘Em All #6 Death Magnetic #7 Load #7 Reload #9 Hardwired… To Self-Destruct #10 St. Anger #11 Lulu MOP and RTL are equal! Load&Reload are in my opinion one double-album!

Death Magnetic and Hardwired are legendary IMO, they deserve more credit; a refreshing return to thrash with the best elements of Load, Reload and St Anger fused in. Also while the whole of St Anger is quite a tedious album to listen to, it has some good tracks, where the "garbage can" snare strangely compliments the angry and desperate atmospheres (the overall production doesn't sound as sharp as it could have been though). However I don't have anything particularly nice to say about Lulu!
They're overall garbage if you ask me. Sub par songwriting and weak guitar tone coupled with the fact that James' voice is gone. To me they sound like exactly what they are: lukewarm attempts at going back to the old days after a decade and a half of country blues rock and St. Anger. I think Load and Reload are actually better albums even though they weren't metal and were disappointing as hell.
@@johnp82 I agree, since black Album they learned to aim for the sing along chorus as a purpose. Not saying they didn't have them before, but riffs came first, chorus sat there naturally. Death magnetic and Hardwired are mainstream among popular metal bands and genres which mix pop and metal riffs, but Metallica to do that is just cheesy, feels like betrayal. What bothers me most are the horrible melodies like in Day that never comes
I don’t care what anyone says, every Metallica album has something special to it. (Except Lulu, I don’t count that as Metallica, I consider it as a Lou Reed album) Even St. Anger, I enjoy every song in it, plus a few have helped me through hard times.
I disagree, buy a random metal album from the eighties and it will be at least twice as good as St. Anger. They sell albums due to their legendary status these days, not by the quality of their outputs.
@@havok6703 how? Tell me how please. St anger is heavy as fuck, and has some of metallicas best riffs. Hardwired in my opinion is a great album but I rather listen to death magnetic. @@Umbra_Nazgul I actually like the album but I think that it's kinda dumb and primitive to place being a metalhead over listening to a random album from 2003
I'm still really like the Black Album despite the band going to the mainstream and not so thrashy direction. "My Friend of Misery" and "The Struggle Within" being my favorite songs on the album.
Great list, I rank AJFA higher since the justice for Jason version came out. Anthrax, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest would be cool. Also would like slightly longer maybe more time on fav songs/cool parts or deep cut(s). Thanks for the great content keep up the good work!
yeah but justice for jason was just a bootleg, some private person that fiddled with it. yeah I'll probably make these a bit longer in the future. Cheers!
...and the #1 song from Lightning? Has to be the opening track. The intensity is still there years later. I remember buying the album almost immediately after Fade to Black hit late night radio.
Creeping Death is of course amazing, Ride the Lightning is crazy too, I mean Fight Fire with Fire, such a brutal song, Ktulu is one of the greatest instrumentals of all time and Cliff on For whom the bell tolls, it's just pure magic.
Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All will always be number one and two for me. This was the pinnacle time period for progressive material, incredible song arrangements and just plain bad ass metal. I will never get tired of these two masterpieces.

this would be very difficult and I'm sure that a lot of people would disagree with the order since the entire Death discography is absolutely phenomenal
Cheers!
If I am going to say something positive about Lulu, it's an album that's so bad it's funny and entertaining. "I am the table!"
It's also a very good frisbee, it flies through the air real well, it's amazing! ;) Cheers!
After listening to Lulu, St. Anger sounds like a masterpiece. 🤣🤣
@@RuthlessMetalYT The only record I did that with was a W.A.S.P. single ("blood pack"). I hated it.
Prototype was a demo otherwise It would be a strong contender. :D Bulldozer from Italy also put out some terrible techno sounding stuff.

I'll probably dare to outside of thrash now and then even if it's kinda my thing. I need to catch up on some of the more modern maiden releases first.

In terms of ranking albums Judas Priest and Iron Maiden come to mind, the giants of trad metal. It's always interesting to see how differently people rank their albums. One's ranking could be completely different to another's. This is the thing about music, taste in it is completely subjective.

"...even if Metallica has more or less sucked for the last 30 years" lol
If you took all the songs that are even remotely worth listening to from The Black Album through St. Anger, had the band spiff them up a bit, then re-record them with a good producer, you might get one halfway decent album out of it. And it would still be Metallica's worst album overall. I heard how epic "Enter Sandman" could have been when the hardcore punk band Vice Squad covered it for a punk tribute album for Metallica.
The intensity just wasn't there after Puppets for me, and Justice was too much of a rehash of Puppets at lower speed
@@fzr1000981
Justice had some great songs, but some of the tracks were overly long and unwieldy; Metallica tried too hard to be prog and some songs suffered as a result.
The bad mixing/production, with Jason Newsted's bass barely audible, also held this album back from being in the same category as Lightning or Puppets.
Still, songs like "Blackened," "One," and "Shortest Straw" are absolute gems.
@@deantodd8103 for me and justice for all is one of their best albums i put it after master of puppets in the second place. It is great. 10. Load
-King Nothing, Until It Sleeps, and Ain't My B*tch were good, but overall, this was a bigger culture shock than AJFA was to the Black Album for sure. Meh.
9. Reload
-Dig the first four tracks, but I call that an EP and move on.
8. Garage INC
-Everyone loved the Whisky in the Jar cover, and it was great, but I was hooked On the Road cover, and the Diamond Head cover as well. Blitzkrieg, too, was good.
7. Death Magnetic
-The album that reversed the curse since 1991.
5. Kill 'Em All
-I know it's an all-time classic, but it's not my cup of tea, per say. The Four Horseman and Seek And Destroy are my favorites for sure, and I appreciate the rawness and what would become of the group.
4. The Black Album
-Best selling album doesn't mean best album in the disco, but it still had great moments among the BIG hits. For every Nothing Else Matters, there was a Of Wolf and Man, for every Enter Sandman, there was The God That Failed, and for The Unforgiven, there was The Struggle Within.
3. ...And Justice For All
-Despite the poor production and 1/10 bass quality (poor Jason), it's still an awesome album. From Blackened the whole way to Dyer's Eve, you'd be remiss if there was a miss on the album, plus the nod and ode to Cliff Burton will move you as well.
2. Ride The Lightning
-This becomes a matter of preference, but this is close. I love both this and Master of Puppets, but the SLIGHT difference is I prefer the sound of MOP to this one, but pretty much every cut on RTL is awesome.
1. Master of Puppets
-My personal favorite Metallica album. I'll play Battery as much as I'll play Leper Messiah, Orion as much as I'll play The Thing That Should Not Be. I like this and would say the rest of the big 4 and Cannibal Corpse , Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Celtic Frost.
I've hardly even listened to Cannibal Corpse so I couldnt do them but the rest of those bands I will probably rank some day if I keep this up forever. hehe
Agreed, Judas Priest was ahead of their time!
Kill Em' All will always be my number 1. Those riffs and solo's are just so disgusting
Same. Kill Em All is my fav Metallica album.
Phantom lord’s solos and riffs are nasty
Thank you Dave mustaine
Always underrated. Even in this list in the video. Glad I'm not the only one who ranks this high. Though probably not my #1, but certainly in my top 3. I rate it above Ride the Lightning which I feel is always rated too high. I didn't quite enjoy the sound quality of Ride the Lightning, and felt like the song writing wasn't as good as the following two albums, and wasn't as intense as Kill em' All.
#1 Master of Puppets
#1 Ride the Lightning
#3 …And Justice For All
#4 Black Album
#5 Kill ‘Em All
#6 Death Magnetic
#7 Load
#7 Reload
#9 Hardwired… To Self-Destruct
#10 St. Anger
#11 Lulu
MOP and RTL are equal! Load&Reload are in my opinion one double-album!
Cheers!
This is my exact list if you flip justice and mop
Very good list
1.Ride the lightning
2.And justice for all
3.Master of puppets
4.Kill ‘em all
5.The black album
6.Death magnetic
7.Reload
8.Hardwired to self destruct
9.Load
10.Garage inc.
11.St. Anger
12.Lulu(obviously)
Just my personal list.
Would you do a Tankard or Razor list, that's a must watch video.
I might some day
Death Magnetic and Hardwired are legendary IMO, they deserve more credit; a refreshing return to thrash with the best elements of Load, Reload and St Anger fused in. Also while the whole of St Anger is quite a tedious album to listen to, it has some good tracks, where the "garbage can" snare strangely compliments the angry and desperate atmospheres (the overall production doesn't sound as sharp as it could have been though). However I don't have anything particularly nice to say about Lulu!
sure, they were better than load, reload and st anger, but they aren't good metal albums, they are both highly average.
(Except Lulu, I don’t count that as Metallica, I consider it as a Lou Reed album)
Even St. Anger, I enjoy every song in it, plus a few have helped me through hard times.
I disagree, buy a random metal album from the eighties and it will be at least twice as good as St. Anger. They sell albums due to their legendary status these days, not by the quality of their outputs.
@@RuthlessMetalYT if you don't like st anger your not a metal head. That album exposed the posers.
@@Umbra_Nazgul that's bs
@@havok6703 how? Tell me how please. St anger is heavy as fuck, and has some of metallicas best riffs. Hardwired in my opinion is a great album but I rather listen to death magnetic. Do you listen to gojira? Or anything else besides metallica? Hence why I say posers. If you don't like raw aggressive underground sounding metal than your a poser.
I've always loved The Struggle Within ... Easily a bridge to AJFA.
the chorus is kinda bad though.
@@RuthlessMetalYT Fair enough. Besides the riff after the solo, the chorus is my favorite part of the song.
Cheers!
i agree 100% to this list. you nailed every one
Cheers!
You almost went in reverse chronological order which is.. pretty much how you should approach Metallica
That is pretty much how you should approach metal in general. :) Bands tend to get worse and worse for every release. :D haha
@@RuthlessMetalYT So true! People tent to just focus on Metallica when they all did it.
...and the #1 song from Lightning?

Would love to hear your rankings for some old school bands whose large discographies have changed so much over their careers like Maiden, Priest or Accept / U.D.O. for starters. Also would like accompanying rankings of the rest of the big four, and of course Motörhead.
I probably will!
I actually really enjoy Load/Reload and st anger after years off shitting on them because they weren’t metal but I gave them a good listen a few years ago dont really see the big deal I understand what they were going for still not listening to Lulu tho not really a Lou Reed fan
I don't hate those albums, they are alright rock albums but I don't think anyone should expect them to sound like their first 4-5 albums.
@@RuthlessMetalYT In my opinion getting into those albums immediately after listening to their 80s stuff will give you a negative view on them Metallica during load etc was a different monster than the one in 89 not to mention what their intentions for what these albums were meant to sound like people shouldn’t expect metal from them because that’s not what they were meant to portray
THRASH METAL WAS UNDER ASSAULT FROM PEARL JAM AND NIRVANA WHAT TO DO IN THAT SITUATION? ESPECIALLY WHEN THE RECORD COMPANIES WHERE A LOT LESS SUPPORTIVE OF ANY TYPE OF METAL EVEN THE GLAM BANDS GOT THROWN OVERBOARD AND THEY WERE THE HARMLESS ONES JUST OUT TO GET THE FEMALES WITH THEIR VERSION WHICH GOT SHAFTED ANYWAY TOO!! BUT THE THRASHERS DID SURVIVE THE ALMOST 20 YEARS OF OBSCURITY AND ARE BACK AND STRONGER THAN EVER.
Just a suggestion, start with the big four then branch out to other bands. The big four are popular so starting with them will get clicks on the videos in the series. And I think it's clear everyone here wants to see this be a new series
I probably will do the big thrash bands and some big heavy metal bands. :) we'll see. Cheers!
@@RuthlessMetalYT I have complete faith in your ability to do a good job, and cheers to you as well.
10. "St. Anger" 9. "Death Magnetic" 8. "Reload" 7. "Hardwired to Self-Destruct" 6. "Load" 5. "Kill 'Em All" 4. "Ride the Lightning" 3. "And Justice for All". 2. "Master of Puppets" 1. "Black Album". "St. Anger" is really the only bad album by Metallica imo, the rest are at least good.
I agree in part. My rank is as follows:
1. Master of Puppets (9.5/10)
2. Ride the Lightning (9.5/10)
3. And Justice for All (9.5/10)
4. Kill ‘em All (8.5/10)
5. Reload (8/10)
6. The Black Album (7.5/10)
7. Death Magnetic (7.5/10)
8. Hardwired (7/10)
9. Load (6.5/10)
10. St. Anger (0/10)
Very cool and very baised
You are pretty cool in your commentary. Are you from Norway?
Thank you, No I'm from Sweden. :)
In my opinion kill them all is my favorite thrash album of all time
Cheers!
Here I am
quick as hell!
I enjoy more Garage Inc. than the Black Album, specially the Garage Days EP...besides that detail the list is perfect.
I do too but covers is covers and original songs is more interesting to me.
I prefer BA
Great list and a great idea for a new series. I would say that MEGADETH should be the next logical suggestion.
Yes, they are coming up.
King Diamond , next please , he is my favorite musician ever and curious of how you would rank his catalogue.
