Skylight Calendar - Best Family Calendar? Apple - Outlook - Google Calendar

  • Friendly Review of the Skylight Calendar ( skylightcal.com ) This Digital Family Organizer syncs with Google Calendar, Apple iCould Calendar, Outlook, Cozi, and Yahoo Calendars to provide a single place for the entire family to keep track of their schedule. Google Calendar integration is easy with the instructions online. Similar with Apple and the other calendar types. You can also add events directly on the calendar using the touch screen. You can hang the calendar up as a wall display or you can sit it down using the stand.

    It’s decent for its price but a truly perfect calendar would have: 1. An E-ink display (like a kindle reader to resemble actual paper without the sheen of an electronic screen) 2. Motion detection to intelligently wake up when someone approaches it (like the Nest thermostat) and 3. A much larger size to always stay in month view and still be able to view full titles for day events

      If you are looking for a calendar like this with eink display, google for "Invisible Calendar E Paper". To be fair, the display is actually smaller, not bigger

      Hey, IT. Actually, just yesterday I "invented" this thing, as a solution to having a common calendar my wife and I could share in a common space, say, the kitchen counter. Well, someone else apparently got the idea way before I did, and then got it to market first. But I'm still taking credit for my brilliant original invention! This is the first of its kind that I've seen in my research. If you've got ideas for a better product, please let me know, thanks.

    Its missing one major thing voice commands. For instance voice chatting your information into calendar, so you would tap on their calendar date that you want to enter your info and hit voice chat or microphone to enter it by voice "like a text message" with a vocabulary Library built in also. Because typing in your info can be slow for busy people.

    Not ready for prime time. I don't have a problem with the calendar having to be plugged in all of the time, or that it doesn't have alarms or alerts. I do, however, expect it to work properly. I have been working with tech support for over a month in an attempt to get the calendar to work properly. The calendar syncs with my iCalendar just fine, but some of the entries appear on the wrong days, while other entries before and after those dates are correct. The calendar also cannot handle entries that span more than one day, such as a four day camping trip entry. Even more frustrating is that some of the calendar entries appear correctly on the month view, but are incorrect on the weekly view. I think my patience has run its course and this will be heading back to the manufacturer.

    • @garybroyles2097

      Update - Issues with the calendar have been resolved. It now handles entries that span multiple days, and the entries are appearing where they should. The sync between my Google calendar, the Skylight Calendar, and my iPhone have been working great.

    2:35 The calendar looks great but it's unfortunate that the monthly view only shows the dates where we have a scheduled event. The calendar should work as a real calendar, ie show all the dates of the month, and highlight the dates where we have an appointment. I would also like to know if it's possible to change the language to french.

    One feature of this calendar is making me crazy. Husband and I have a google calendar that has both work and personal events. I do not want to sync my whole calendar to the skylight because it would be overwhelming. Skylight says I can invite the calendar to specific events via our personalized email address. BUT then we have to set our google calendar to public. That's bananas. We are attorneys and I'm sure other professionals have calendar events they wish not to have to be made public. The work around is to add everything manually to the skylight which completely defeats the purpose of simplifying things. This seems like a deal breaker. Probably sending back unless they can figure out a better way

      Yeah. Seems really expensive for its limitations. I feel like you can buy a used iPad to display your calendar and then you have a “million” other uses for it as well.

    • @ThePlotts
      @ThePlotts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@bjelln It's cheaper than any decent tablet on the market. Also, it kind of seems to be the point that it's limited to the calendar. With 3 young kids, we don't need another tablet they can run off with. It also integrates the calendars better than just a standard google calendar display, for instance. I think the addition of alerts would be nice. But as a google calendar user, I am constantly missing my alerts anyway. I wish they had a better system for that (google).

    • @hakanlundberg
      @hakanlundberg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d think e-ink would be a better idea to use. And with a capable battery, it could likely work for some time without having to plug it in. However a fair e-ink display and batteries would raise the cost. I think there has been attempts to crowed fund something like that. And it’s obvious some with the skills are doing their own using raspberry pi and similar.
      Regarding alarms/alerts… Only if it’s not synced with the calendar clouds. I go insane when all my digital units continuously beep for all kinds of reason. 😵‍💫
      For me, one function missing is viewing reminders (side by side so you don’t have to alternate views). At least those with a set date and that are “urgent”. The grocery list function could likely be expanded to sync with Apple’s, Google’s, Microsoft’s, etc. reminders/to do’s. Or Trello, the very good free one I sometimes use privately and in my job for organizing more complex shores.
      I also almost always use week view in my calendars. And every calendar ought to show the first day on the next week in week mode. Set to be Monday for me. So on Sunday evening I will easily see what’s up on Monday.
