TRADITIONAL BELFAST Pastie, a popular NORTHERN IRISH snack
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 ม.ค. 2024
- The Belfast pastie, a unique, distinctive, and beloved food item in Northern Ireland, particularly in Belfast, has a history that intertwines with the cultural and social fabric of the region. While its origins are somewhat murky, the pastie's development reflects the broader history of working-class Belfast. A pastie like no other - no pastry!
The Belfast pastie originated in the working-class communities of Belfast. It was a practical and economical way to create a filling meal. The pastie's ingredients - typically minced pork, potato, and onion - were readily available and affordable, making it a popular choice among families.
Nowadays, the Belfast pastie is considered a delicacy and is an integral part of Northern Ireland's culinary heritage. It's a sought-after comfort food for locals and a must-try for visitors. Most Fish and Chips shops throughout Belfast and Northern Ireland have the Belfast Pastie on their menu. Served with Chips and a side of mushy peas, this is comfort food at its best.

Man alive they are amazing.,❤
Hope they do you justice! I love them. Best, Rik
Hey Rik. That made me laugh when I first saw it. My Missus is from Belfast and I have spent the best part of 20 years there. When I first met her she was going The Chippie for some lunch and she said to me that they did a lovely Pastie, so I says, get me one with Chips. When I open the paper I am staring at it, what??? I didn't know what it was, I was expecting a Cornish Pasty, I won't tell ya what she called me but Boy I soon got to love them, they are superb and they sure looked the right stuff mate 👍
Stephen, you have made my day, mate! I can believe what she might have said. Yes, I made these as I remembered. I hope I've done them justice - Henrietta, who commented first, is from Northern Ireland and didn't complain. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChef Ha ha. I'm sure you have mate, they are good I must admit, especially with salt & Vinegar on 👍

There are some sheduled already. Keep a look in. Thanks, Best, Rik@@Curryenthusiast01
Pasties were invented by getting rid of leftover chips and sauages put through the mincer and battered. Nowadays many are made specially, but many recipes originate from preventing waste, like stale bread for toast & croutons and hard sponge cake for trifle.
Thanks for sharing. Best, Rik
Yes! That's the one, I also thought baked beans helped with colour!
Another food thing from N.Ireland which you may be interested in is Vegetable Roll, made with beef mince mostly and herbs, very tasty it is!
Sounds great! Very interested. Any tips on how to make it. Do you make with sausage or beef mince. Thanks for sharing. Best, Rik
Made with mince beef and rusk, leek ,onion, tomato spices. If you google vegatable roll N.Ireland ther are pictures of how it looks.Iits sliced and fried normaly. @@BackyardChef

I would love to see how it's made, I get mine delivered over here, along with pasties. Monthly box thing. They are usually gone in a week.
Thank you. Best, Rik@@WeAreThePeople1690
This vid was great. I've just subscribed. When I was a kid (way back in the seventies) my Grandad used to make a version of this. The only difference was that he would use corned beef instead of pork, everything else was exactly the same as your recipe. I used to help with the mixing. Grandad would always leave a couple aside for me to take home with me for supper, my mom would re-heat them for me under the grill. Such simple times, such happy days.
Thanks for the sub! Thanks for sharing your fantastic memories. Food like this has lost its way in the home in modern times - shame. As you know its delicious! Best, Rik
Well done Rik. Being a Belfast man, they are a heart stopper lol 😂 And the other thing is we mostly have a splattering of salt and malt vinegar to go along with a pastie supper.
If you want to be really greedy you can get a Belfast bap, cut it, lather it with butter and put the pastie in that when you bring it home. Super love the video and recipe. Cheap version can be done with a mix of sausage meat too.
Right up my street, you know walking home from the chippie I always loved the soggy vinegar paper (not to eat) the smell is one to remember. Thanks for sharing. Hope I did them justice. Best, Rik
@BackyardChef You did indeed. Haven't had a pastie in years. This weekend am going to have one as a treat from the local chippy!

never seen that before Rik got to try that, a chip shop in Cardiff used to make beef burgers in batter they were fab, I do make a beef burger wellington its very good and much cheaper than fillet steak. cook the burger let it go cold wrap it in puff pastry with cooked onions and mushrooms a slab of cheese, egg wash it and bake in the oven , fab
I used to love the burgers and sausages in batter - they were very welcomed when the pennies were down. Mind you, fish and chips 20 years ago a pound - I had some a year ago = wow, a second mortgage! I would dig into that burger, wellington, mate; sounds great. Best, Rik
£20 for two lots of fish and chips and £7 for a Chinese curry or sweet and sour, its very expensive for a take away now Rik@@BackyardChef
I'm from Belfast and pasties are great, the batter needs to be done right and an even dose of salt and vinegar and hey you've got a great snack to get u up the road after the pub! 😂👍🍻

Those chips remind me of my childhood peeling and cutting up spuds to deep fry them in dripping(which would be be used over and over) here in Tasmania! The pastie looks somewhat like we’d call a hamburger in batter, but they’re beef based. We also have locally made Cornish Pasties, but I’m not too certain how authentic they are…🤣
Thank you. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChef ooh, here’s one for you Rik, Tasmanian scallop pies! You haven’t lived until you’ve tried them!👍
Thank you ! I have only been to NI once and I had never heard of these until now.! I love cooking and trying my hand at old time recipes.. think I will squeeze the onions a bit though, get some juice out, might make pattie mix a bit more firm?
Anyway love it, thanks again ❤
Hope you enjoy. Squeeze the juice form the potato a little too! However, the starch from the potato helps binds it all inside when they cook. Best, Rik
When I was a kid in Wales we had rissoles, I loved them, they were made from left over chips and a little ham I think, many many years since I ate one.

Delicious and very original recipe for NI here Rik and with mushy peas and chips just needs a good sprinkling of Non Brewed Condiment (Vinegar) and salt for the true authentic taste
Oh yes! Some say using mashed potato. That would work well, however i wasn't shown that way. Best, Rik
I have tried them in lots of places but Red Barn pasties in Anderstown were the best back in the day. The two lovely staff on the counter told me that yhey were hand made that morning. This is back on the 80's
Thanks for sharing John. It's about 25 yrs ago when I tried them. Best, Rik

Patties are also popular in northeast England. Usually cheese, onion & potato or corned beef, onion & potato.
Yes. Thanks for sharing. Best, Rik
Oh..can you make fish n chips.? Here in California when I was a teen, my dad used to go to a fish n chip shop called H.Salt Esquire Fish & Chips. It was the best Fish I ever ate. Really crunchy batter on the outside. White flaky fish inside. It's making my mouth water from the memory. That shop no longer exists and I've been searching high and low for another fish shop that prepares it the same. I can't find one. Yes. There are a few good fish restaurants out here in the San Francisco Bay Area, but none like H. SALT ESQUIRE. Do you get an idea of what I described chef? I just love everything you've cooked so far, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks chef Rik😊❤

Similar to croquettes, I'd say. I love chicken croquettes,I'm positive I'd love these
I would think you would enjoy these. They are real tasty! Best, Rik
Croquettes? i was thinking the same thing. My mother would buy them @ the butcher shop they were called ‘mock drumsticks’ or “mock birds” they were made from chicken or veal (very expensive nowdays for. veal I never see it ). meat seasoned like sausage ,molded on a wooden stick, breaded and deep fried or pan fried. . i am intrigued by battered and deep fried recipes espcially you mention hamburger patties.. or ‘chicken fried” i have never mastered how to deep fry with good results and not making a big mess. Rik, you make it look easy!! My mother had an electric deep fryer with a basket in the 1950’s..i had one in 1968, , but it took so long to get the oil hot and bring it back to hot after frying a few pieces.. probably need a better brand..anybody have a suggeston for the US? . Thanks for the hamburger Wellington idea,
Thanks for sharing - I loved reading! Many things have either gone or are now so overpriced that folks need help to afford to buy. Best, Rik@@prarieborn6458
You would rarely find a pastie with that much meat...mainly due to cost cutting. Some dodgy ones are dyed pink inside to imply the presense of pork! They are highly seasoned mashed potato (or leftover chips originally) and onion. The seasoning will be top secret, but mainly quite peppery with herbs. You will find some recipe attempts online. Invented to compete with the arrival of the burger chains, so it would have been a pastie bap originally.
Thank you. Best, Rik

Having lived in Norn Iron until the 80's and still visiting to see family, I've never seen or heard of these.
Clearly not as popular is some areas as in others.
Thanks for sharing. It does sound that way if you have missed seeing them. Many Chip shops serve them and have been serving them for a very long time. Best, Rik
@sameebah : Many people not born in Northern Ireland will go into a fish & chip shop and not notice the word "pastie" on the menu, or assume they are like the English "Cornish Pasty" in pastry, and so they can be easily missed without knowing about them, but they are widespread throughout Northern Ireland. The closest thing I saw in England to them was a battered beefburger, which was half as appealing. They were originally a leftover dish.
