This method of testing is head and shoulders above any other and will ultimately yield the best and most humane results down the line. Well done, gentlemen
Thank y'all for taking the time to really show how important it is to use quality broad heads. An ethical hunter should never use any of that cheap junk. It should be illegal to even sell that garbage to the hunt live animals with.
It would be interesting to see this type of testing on the "old guard" broadheads like the Ace Standard 160g ($7 each), Zwickey Eskimo ($8.30 each), Tusker Aztec ($6 each) to see how well they do.
I agree. I can tell you I bent a Tusker Delta on a cow elk shoulder, once. The Ace heads are great, esp. since they started brazing them way back when. But the bumpy interlocking ferrule profile gives them demerits innthe Ashby 12 Factors system. Still, I bought five 6-packs and they might last me til I die.
Just wanted to show my appreciation. Y'alls videos got me into archery and bow hunting this last year. The Adapt+ is a beast and crazy affordable. Figured out a Sirius Apollo arrow build that my bow loves and they fly like lasers. Will be selecting a broadhead soon and getting ready for fall. Y'all rock.
The polymer head on a heavy arrow is what I have been using on rabbits in my back pasture. An easy-out works bet to take the broken part out of the arrow. I am also using cheap, heavy arrows. Works pretty well.
I have a couple swhackers, grim reaper whitetail specials, rages hypodermics, and spitfires Aellen chisel point fixed 3 blades that are all mangled to hell and broken blades from shooting hogs. Switched to Magnus buzzcuts and heavier arrows 2yrs ago, after finding these guys, and Ranch Fairy and the results were amazing.
The variability is so surprising, didn’t realise the difference until you used your usual hunting Magnus broadhead as a comparison. Cheapos break, shatter and damage the arrows. The Magnus can be used again. Well explained, great educational video.
So Troys point about the insert bending is interesting. I had several aluminum outserts bend. These were from a reputable company. The theory was that the length of the field tip, 200 gr, provided enough leverage to bend the threaded portion of the field tip and the aluminum portion. I would not have believed it and would have assumed I hit a reinforcement in the target had it not happened to every arrow in my quiver at a shoot. It can happen but only under a specific set of circumstances. I have since switched to a full stainless outsert system with no issues.
Cool Video! On the polymer broadheads. Much like an old Bear Razor. Nock your arrow, line the broadhead up, so when you shoot, the broadhead is vertical,,, then get straight fletched arrows. They will be more accurate,,, but not much more.
Oh, and thanks to Troy gor clearing something up. Clear back in Traditional Bowhunter Magazine's Ashby article series, Dr. Ed had mentioned the threaded stem on broadheads being an "area of significant weakness and vulnerability to damage", which I had beleived ever since. Now, with Troys work, I had wondered all along why that was no longer true. Seems like, similar to how it developed that adding insert weight didnt help if the head was fragile, the screw-in bit is only a liability if the rest of the head already sucks. Good to know.
Thanks for doing this guys. I'm always on the lookout for something that's actually functional and cheap. I have bought several Ebay broadheads out of curiosity, and I wouldn't wipe my NOSE on most of them. It's sad to realize that the "Allen" heads some guys used to buy at WAlly's World were just this crap. I swear, though, I'm just about priced out of this sport. I do about everything as cheaply as it can be done, and I can still barely afford to hunt, anymore. I love the idea of buying $30.00 monolithic broadheads I can resharpen, but I actually lose plenty of arrows, too! There were even broadheads for wood arrows, which were obvious knock-offs of old Magnus and Eclipse. They seemed too light weight, but I grabbed some when they were cheap. Disappointingly. I could bend the triple-laminated tips with my fingers . I almost hate to say ANY of them AREN'T crap, because American businesses deserve our support, but the knock-off that rhyme with Snelix heads, and fake Dirt Crap heads, I wouldn't hesitate to use in a pinch. I'm sure the fake Snelix is garbage steel, but its 8/100 thick, and they say it's 420 stainless.
I have a package of those Cheapshot broadheads (100gr) usually carry one on my quiver for shooting close range at something I don't want to waste my good broadheads. Beyond 20 yards accuracty goes out the window. They seem to benefit from a heavier arrow and in my testing are horrible on crossbows as well.
Best field testing I've ever seen yet and better than shooting the wood. Great work fellas, and i love the videos. Been watching for many years. Wish you guys would come down to North Arkansas and go out with me. Keep slinging fellas 💪🏽👊🏼🇺🇸
Cheapest broadheads ever... Magnus. Just don't lose them and their warranty ensures them no matter what. Fly great. Sharp. Dependable. And the warranty is second to none. 6 days from the day the old one leaves your mailbox a new one arrives. No questions asked. Great content guys.
You answered your question about why mechanical broadheads don’t open. Theres a similar issue with liner-lock pocket knives. The mechanism is so flimsy that any torque or bend will lock up the mechanism and prevent it from opening
Honestly love the video I was actually considering the 3 blade ones for some raccoon control around the property but I was a little concerned about the accuracy. Love the lab work guys keep it coming!
Appreciate Ranch overseeing. I wonder if you increased the weight of the polymer broadhead arrow to 3-4x that of the arrow used with all the other shots if it would have been a pass thru like the magnus? If so, there may be a case for weight over broadhead durability in extreme cases.
Been watching you guys since Midwest whitetails! Just ordered 2 packs of the magnus single bevel to support you guys and I’ll be buying a lot more off the website here soon! Thanks for the videos pumped to see what the 2024 has in store for you guys and us viewers!!!!
Those mechanicals from Amazon at that price are obviously junk. But when a front deploying broadhead stops The blades slam back forward and appear to have not opened. You would need to examine the hide to see if they opened or not.
I’m all fairness, how times did you all shoot the shoulder before the single bevel blade? Seems like it was already Swiss cheese before that shot was made. I know it what you use and you know it works, but it really only had to break through one shoulder. The video was definitely fun to watch!
Definitely shot the pig 4-5 times but shot other heads before and after that one. Single bevel was the only one that blew clear through. We also tested the single bevel on a hog last year vs many of the industry leading mechanicals and it consistently outperformed them when hitting heavy bone. That is only two tests though with a few dozen shots. Lots more to learn!
Good info. But id like to see the magnus shot first instead of last after several holes and bone had already been broke . I know it is heavier and stronger but you not shooting deer and hogs after they already been made into swiss cheese. Keep up the good work guys.
Was the last shot not above the scapula? I have taken a few deer with those 3 razor blade broadheads, but I now use spitfire XXX with my crossbow (missed a deer, and felt like consistency wasn't there with the cheap triple blade broadheads).
I think the mechanicals when subjected to a hard impact like bone, it bends the pivot point of the blades or even worse, shoves them back and jams them against the body locking them up
that last arrow that took off was like a 2 stage rocket...it jettisoned the main fuel tanks and went looking for the moon.....or URANUS PLUTO...cant wait for the Deer season..hope you guys put up as much as the Turkeys
I was actually looking at those cheep expandables for my bow because im loosing the arrows almost every shot and i cant afford it anymore at around 40 dollars a pack for 3 broadheads not to mention the cost of arrows im loosing around 12 to 20 a year minimum in my somewhat urban environment between deer and turkeys we have like river bolders sticking up everywhere and the arrows hit them and they are toast
Majority of the time you can put a screwdriver on the end of it, push down and twist it out. It's usually not jammed in there. I've done it with metal ones. Lots of times we even use magnets on metal ones
MUZZY. I use 100gr 3 blade, trocar tip. The best broadhead on the planet for the price. I have never once not had a pass through on whitetail. One time I took a shot at a deer quarter toward me. I know.... The arrow entered on the deers right brisket and exited out the back of his right hind quarter. I have video. It's possible to reuse the broadheads because the damage is almost nil. If anything one blade is dinged up. My grandfather had me using WASP broadheads to begin my journey of hunting, trying different things and learning.
It’s funny about the bone stuff with mechanicals… I had two that I trust. Even had hit bone with them in the past. Thorn and sevr. Both I have put through shoulder blade no issues and fast recoveries. I prefer sevr as thorn doesn’t replace blades and are a shoot once and once only basically now. Sevr you can replace the blades.
From someone who has a 50ct of cheepshots.... a tiny flathead screwdriver get it hot and unscrew the broken insert... also they turn hard past 20yds.... never got them to fly good.....
I’ve been testing ozcut brand broadheads that are the same as the magnus broadheads you’re using and they are awesome and a lil bit cheaper. Look up the crimson talon cleaver
I’m shooting vap tkos with a 150gr cutthroat and 50gr insert. Total arrow weight around 510gr. Would that be enough for a pig? I was around 600gr until I changed my arrow set up this year and I’m getting a better flight and deeper penetration than ever. Might be going on my first ever hog hunting trip in a few months and really want to get one with the bow. Any thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated
Heat up the tip of a tiny screwdriver and shove it in the top of the plastic and then unscrew it, that’s how I would go about taking out the plastic threads.
Zach's turn around reaction in slow mo!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Can we pattern the boomerang arrow? So when the monster buck is behind a tree and thinks he's safe.......SLOCK!!!😂😂😂😂😂
I started into archery hunting a few years back and started out slinging 575grn fixed blades and I’m down to 428grn 3 blade megameat mechanicals and I’m still blowing through white tails. Only difference is the 2” 3 blade does so much damage they drop a lot faster.
I would love to see the Allen mechanical broadheads that are 20 dollars for a pack in Walmart tested. We’ve killed deer with them but haven’t seen slow motion footage of them and what not, actually have had a couple deer only run 40 yards with heavy blood trails tracking them
Ive used the cheapshot, didn't care for the balance and accuracy, they seemed easy to catch the wind, Maybe the 150 grains are better in that regard, but the penetration was impressive for what it is
If yall would’ve got Deepower Broadheads off Amazon, yall wouldn’t be laughing. Shave your arms out the box. Extremely durable. $17 for 12. But yall probably watched John Lusky’s review of them. They’re great. Makes you wonder if everyone is price gouging. Also when you pull that mechanical back through, the blades close back.
I did buy the cheap fix blade Broadhead, when first started bowhunting six years ago, and it went into the doe about 3 inches and broke off. I learned you get what you pay for..
Have you guys tried the lone wolf custom broad heads? I shot them last season and harvested 1 buck. Seemed like small hole but recovered after about 45 yards. Out of a revolt x80
I'm 9 for 9 with knockoff Rage Hypodermics (12 for $20 online). I just sharpen the blades myself and take broadside shots. They are definitely one time use but they're also less than $2 and great for doe management. Save your expensive broadhead for a quartering-to shot on a nice buck.
Would be cool to see a little more investigation. Is there an arrow or even trad archery setup where the polymers fly consistently? Would simply lubing up and loosening the cheap mechanicals allow for more consistent function? Would a small glob of epoxy or JB weld hold the 3 blade together enough to survive being shot through the bone?
You should try getting in touch with the slow motion guys and try shooting a bare shoulder blade with a mechanical broadhead to see what happens with their high speed cameras
So there is a company on amazon that makes thoes Mechanicals called xicutioner broadheads. Identical to the ones you guys shoot that didnt open. Me and my brother used the Executioner broadheads for a few years on whitetail and they worked Excellent. Oh and they were a 3 pk not 12 lol love your content and keep up the cool vids
Thanks. Stick with USA made. I have wondered how these would perform! So funny to see them just get destroyed. Definitely not for shooting HOGs or deer
I don't know how you oriented the 2 blade broad head,... but your supposed to heat up your incerts and make them vertical and align it with a vane or feather. Absolutely the best way to test broad heads is just like this. China makes 2 blades that look like Ace/ Zwicky,....their glue ons but you can use screw in incert's.
No matter the broadhead, I would advise anyone here to NOT buy them off Amazon. Order whatever broadhead you like right from the manufacturer and pay that extra money. Many horror stories of people ordering "their" brand on Amazon, and end up getting a knock off look a like.
I agree the cheaper broadheads aren't worth the risk. I had a incredible year deer hunting last season but my cheap walmart broadheads cost me a few deer sadly. 1st and only year using them. P.s. I've had success with the cheap rages only
I think even among Aazon broadhead quality varies. I've seen several styles that I think I would use no problem, and others I wouldn't EVER shoot at a live animal.
I've killed hogs with all 3. The hybrid just killed a nice buck yesterday, 3 deer so far since I've started using them. I've been testing cheap heads off amazon and building my own arrow builds all from amazon for about 6 yrs now.
Hey homies I just down graded to a trophy ridge 5 arrow quiver with the led light I got it for the ability to stream line my bow and I love every thing about it except for the wiggle it has once its locked in. Is there any thing you have done to make it better
Drill those inserts out with a skinny drill bit then Crazy Glue the drill bit inside that insert and unscrew it with a pair of vise grips or pliers or something
I would rename the polymer set up a boomerang arrow. Have seen arrows so out of tune that they actually slapped the target which tends to affect penetration, hehee.
"head and shoulders" an intentional pun!
It's great that the pig was so still and willing to help with this video.
It would be interesting to see this type of testing on the "old guard" broadheads like the Ace Standard 160g ($7 each), Zwickey Eskimo ($8.30 each), Tusker Aztec ($6 each) to see how well they do.

That slow mo boomerang arrow at the end it freakin crazy!
Y'all rock.
Love how the arrow kept spinning after bouncing back out of the pigs head!! 💪
The polymer head on a heavy arrow is what I have been using on rabbits in my back pasture. An easy-out works bet to take the broken part out of the arrow. I am also using cheap, heavy arrows. Works pretty well.
I think it would be nice to see quality mechanicals vs double bevel and single bevel tested on dead pig. Great video!
I have a couple swhackers, grim reaper whitetail specials, rages hypodermics, and spitfires Aellen chisel point fixed 3 blades that are all mangled to hell and broken blades from shooting hogs. yes, bone shots with mechanicals do happen sometimes. just the same as a bad shot with a single bevel as we seen from the hunting contest

That polymer head with the light arrow would be great for squirrel hunting if you could pattern the swoop 😂
I've taken pest groundhogs with them on the farm. They work pretty good and I don't have to worry about nicking up my broadheads.
They don't work well in wind though from my experience, when using them they seemed to get caught in the wind and thrown off easily.
Thanks for doing this guys. I'm always on the lookout for something that's actually functional and cheap. Holy crap!! Ive never seen an arrow do that before...😳 Looked like a jet going off an air craft carrier...🤣
To get the plastic out. Heat a Allen wrench and stick it in and let it cool. Then twist out
More videos like these best testing broad heads video I’ve seen in a while the ballistics of the wild game shows what matters instead of the gel

By far the best broadhead on the market. Black hornets are nasty!
They are Awesome I made the switch 2yrs ago, to Buzz Cuts, and will be using the single bevels this season
You don't even need to send them anymore. An email with a photo of them works just fine. Truly an amazing company
When you pull a front deploy expandable backwards its going to close the blades?
Excited to see this seasons THP vids, love y’all
You answered your question about why mechanical broadheads don’t open. Theres a similar issue with liner-lock pocket knives. The mechanism is so flimsy that any torque or bend will lock up the mechanism and prevent it from opening

Was going to say that myself! 👍
and if you pull the broadhead back through a bone (like they did here), blades will fold back closed and can get jammed
I’m all fairness, how times did you all shoot the shoulder before the single bevel blade? Seems like it was already Swiss cheese before that shot was made. I know it what you use and you know it works, but it really only had to break through one shoulder. The video was definitely fun to watch!

Fixing to get married myself 😂
I can’t wait
@@ericstevens8744 Congrats

Skip the mechanicals. Get a bare-shaft tune, and even some of the better Ebay/Amazon heads will fly deadly.
The Helix knock-off isnt bad.
Might have to tune your bow, the knock off ozcuts are good too but need a lot of sharpening once but also stay real sharp afterwards.
Majority of the time you can put a screwdriver on the end of it, push down and twist it out. It's usually not jammed in there. I've done it with metal ones. Lots of times we even use magnets on metal ones
I did a review on those mechanicals and the cheapest amazon single bevels. The single bevels do in-fact kill deer.
IIll watch the video, but which heads were those?
Small left hand drill bit will work perfectly
My weekly dose of serotonin, every THP upload
I love the Amazon expandable for woodchucks !
For the polymer threads, take a small screw driver, heat it up so you can melt it into the threads and twist.
Test SEVR!! Only mechanical that can penetrate bone and stay intact!
4:18.....you can see the tip penetrate and break off on the exit.
We’ve killed deer with them but haven’t seen slow motion footage of them and what not, actually have had a couple deer only run 40 yards with heavy blood trails tracking them
Ive used the cheapshot, didn't care for the balance and accuracy, they seemed easy to catch the wind, Maybe the 150 grains are better in that regard, but the penetration was impressive for what it is
ive looked at those heads on amazon so many times when i was younger so thankful i never bought them.
Go test out the razor back 5, spinning broadhead. It is an Old school broadhead.
Take a small Phillips screwdriver heat it up press it into the end of the insert let it cool and back your plastic out where you broke it off
Hay the cold steel cheap shot are crazy flying. You may bag a squirrel hunter on the next ridge over. LMAO!!!!
I use the gold colored mechanicals and I have never had a deer make it over 40 yards I have pictures of what they do I will continue to use them
If yall haven’t got the threads from the cheap shot out of Ted’s arrows yet, take a left handed drill bit in a drill and they will spin right out
Have you guys tried the lone wolf custom broad heads? I shot them last season and harvested 1 buck. Seemed like small hole but recovered after about 45 yards. Out of a revolt x80
when the mechanical comes to a stop the blades close. its all about taking shots that match your skill and equipment.. cheap as ill goe is some rage.
Test out those new beast broadheads from bowmar archery
Definitely get what ya pay for there..😂😅 What Nick said, why chance the buck of a lifetime.. Thanks for the test. 😊
Have you guys tried any of the 4 blades from tooth of the arrow
You should test the Amazon single bevel heads too
Awesome video guys!!
Great video. Need more like these.
That thing flew like the early rocket tests. Great video.
That last arrow clip is wild.
The way it took off into space 😂
You guys should test sevr broadheads
Thanks. Stick with USA made. I have wondered how these would perform! So funny to see them just get destroyed. Definitely not for shooting HOGs or deer
I'm from a small town in Montana up by the Canadian border and have a wild hog on a trail cam 10 miles in the backcountry
A left-handed drill bit should get those broke it ends out it will back the screw insert completely out and everything
Rocket steelhead 125. Pretty hood resul
A small broken screw extractor will do the trick for the clogged arrow inserts
Try a deadringer superfreak if you want damage
I don't know how you oriented the 2 blade broad head,... but your supposed to heat up your incerts and make them vertical and align it with a vane or feather.
Absolutely the best way to test broad heads is just like this.
China makes 2 blades that look like Ace/ Zwicky,....their glue ons but you can use screw in incert's.
Small slot screw driver, heat it with a lighter and melt it into the plastic and twist out when cool.
That polymer broad head is crazy !😮

I have actually used the first broadheads for the past couple years. Killed my biggest buck to date and a buck in Texas with them.
I think the ferrul is deforming enough to prevent the mechanicals from opening.
Guys Had tears running down my face, Love it.
I agree the cheaper broadheads aren't worth the risk. I had a incredible year deer hunting last season but my cheap walmart broadheads cost me a few deer sadly. 1st and only year using them. P.s. I've had success with the cheap rages only
Just waiting on Magnus to release left bevel ! Cannot hardly wait
When you pull them mechanicals out you folding the blades back closed , bloody obviously !!!!!
Yes that’s correct on the 1st shot (we were wrong on that one) but the 2nd shot where the head went all the way through the broadhead did not open.
@@TheHuntingPublicwrong!
you needed Rocket man there to witness that last shot
Gosh!! Zack reminds me of Ted Nugent from Cat Scratch Fever!! Haha come do a crown land hunt in Ontario!
Crazy how current peak broadhead designs look like the ancient arrowheads found in a creek
I've used the cheap Amazon broadheads and honestly I've never had any problems with them. That being said I hunt whitetail only
I think even among Aazon broadhead quality varies.
There should be a small hex head screw on top of the locking mechanism. If you tighten that a little bit it should help
@@TheHuntingPublic awesome thanks yall
Drill those inserts out with a skinny drill bit then Crazy Glue the drill bit inside that insert and unscrew it with a pair of vise grips or pliers or something
I would have like to see how the magnus did on the skull.
I would rename the polymer set up a boomerang arrow. Have seen arrows so out of tune that they actually slapped the target which tends to affect penetration, hehee.
