Learning Spanish - 1,100 hours with Comprehensible Input

  • I started acquiring Spanish in January 2022 using a method called Comprehensible Input. The idea is that you listen and watch simple videos in Spanish. The videos should be basic enough so that you understand most of what is happening even though you don't understand the words. Over time, the brain makes sense of the words and grammar. I plan to make a video every 100 hours to show my progress.
    I am watching videos on Dreaming Spanish. There are playlists for beginner, intermediate and advanced.

    I'm not a spanish speaker or learner, I'm learning french. But I would suggest learning the phoenetics of the alphabet. I'm using a similar method but as I hear things I repeat them and I talk to myself throughout the day in my target language. Good luck and congrats on the progress

    Congratulations on 1,100 hours! I agree with you about the Olly Richards books. They're labeled "for beginners," but I think they're more suitable for a high A2 to B1 level.

    I'm trying to remember how long did it take me to learn spanish. Something around 360 hours of lessons at least the same amount of homework one hour per day of conversation with my future to be wife at that time. So it's something around 2000 hours. So your estimation of 2000 hours looks realistic to me. Thanks for the video and sharing your experience.

    This guy is the greatest. I tend to agree with the 2400 hour mark for fluency---maybe even 3000 would be accurate. Keep up the amazing attitude and of course I already can't wait for your 1200 hour mark.

    Congratulations just one friendly hint or suggestion if I may… Work on your accent when people learn new languages they tend to learn grammar, vocabulary through whatever means but they seem to continue using the same mouth and tongue muscles and movements they use in their native language, which is a huge mistake.... Any accent can be mastered when you are aware of how to do it :))

    I've been studying two other languages and enthusiastically bought Ollie Richards books. A total waste, they're ridiculously difficult and I'm 4 years into those other languages and easily read all other easy readers and some of the newspaper.

      Ridiculously difficult? They’re A2, early B1 level at best. Definitely not designed for total beginners, but if you have some basic knowledge of grammar they shouldn’t be that difficult.

      Yes this is literally speaking Spanish with a complete American accent with zero effort on the accent, this is something that can be improved and even mastered.... if one is aware of it. It's crazy to me that people think they can speak another language but not use, or even attempt another accent, it's just as important as the grammar and the vocabulary.

      @@tombernard4612 There are tons of accents in Spain, multiply that for every country that has spanish as its official language. Mastering the accent is not important at his stage right now. And, in my opinion, it´s not as important as understanding the language or the use of the language. In fact, I consider it the least important part of it.

    As a Spanish teacher it's great to see all the motivation with learning Spanish. I do also teach with Comprehensible Input and found out to be the best method for my students. Now I decided to start a TH-cam channel to help even more people, and all I can say is that it's not about the amount of hours, but the motivation, and having the right resources to work at your level. If there is anything I can help you with I'm more than happy to do so! Un saludo :)

    Way to go, Dave!! I’m at 332 hrs. I can’t wait to read more. I have Olly Richards books in audible and downloaded in kindle and I’ve dabbled in listening and reading at the same time. I’m trying to hold off a bit longer before I do any “actual” reading. Have you tried audio books at all?

    • @tinynhhouse5467
      @tinynhhouse5467  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! I have not tried audiobooks yet. But I have listened to podcasts while reading the transcript. I also watch more difficult Spanish videos using Spanish subtitles. In the beginning, Pablo doesn't want us to use subtitles because we don't have the correct sounds of the words in our heads yet, so we may be pronouncing the words internally like in English. Does that make sense? Once we have hundreds of hours of listening, we know what the words are supposed to sound like and I think it is then ok to use subtitles.
      We got this! 😄

    Hola amigo, bien por tí, ¡ánimo!
    What do you do with the unknown words, you look them up or not, do you try to guess the meaning from the context only?

    • @tinynhhouse5467
      @tinynhhouse5467  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Normally I try to guess the meaning from the context. If a word is used a lot and I cannot understand the story without knowing what that word means, then I will look it up.
