Wow this is the first time i saw something like that.. These world class players train vigorously to be able to stand and compete in one of the most prestigeous badminton tournament in the world. And for some asshole to ruin it for the players and other spectators alike is just appalling. I believe there should be some rules for this kind of behaviors, ban the guy for life for example. Such an unfair ending, I know she should've ignore it and play on, 'the will to fight through all obstacles' and all but I can't help feeling so bad for her.

If she complains after playing 3-4 shots in the rally, the umpire wouldn’t consider.

In cricket you won’t be able to see the flash as the audience are too far away and the stadium is full of bright lights but in badminton the crowd is soo close it’s irritating , I feel sorry for her

Imagine you're so tensed up and every little thing can distract you, that's what the flash did to her
It happens a lot. I was at the French open last week and every 5 minutes the announcer had to beg people to turn off their flash THAT SERVES NO PURPOSE ANYWAY AT THAT DISTANCE AND IN SO MUCH LIGHT ALREADY. I got a complex camera but I carefully turned off the focus light before even going there. People are extremely stupid and don’t even know or care how to turn it off in their stupid phone.

Usually are just the umpire being an ass. Plus I don't wanna shoot shots but it is very well known about few corrupt umpires during Chinese hosted matches. Which this is from this year's All England iirc that took place in China.

I sat across that girl or boy who got her/his camera out in the most inapproriate moment. It even distracted and annoyed the audience sitting across. So devastating for Tanjung.. she fought so hard and had to deal like so many other players too throughout the tournament with improper behavior of people in the crowd. There definitely should be a rule for that and more assitance for the umpire. He can't have his eyes everywhere. There were annoucements between the rallies to not use any flash, the stewards could have been a bit stricter though and pick out the people specifically. In badminton such a small distraction can be very costly! I personally can't blame the umpire, there are no rules for that. What is he supposed to do?!

Umpire called the security, but all they could do was say to not use flash. That's it. They can't throw anyone out. People told me that last year it wasn't such an issue. No idea why it was so bad this time.
Yeah, big fan, playing and watching and sometimes visiting bigger tournaments. All England is a Super 1000 tournament, most prestigious there is. 12000 ranking pts for the winner. @@taufikhafni751

Though I fully agree that the flash guy/girl should be kicked out immediately after the first one (if it's the same person), I think Tunjung should just continue playing the game. Why? Because from the umpire POV, he wouldn't be able to see the flash, therefore no way to proof Tunjung's claim.
I am by no means hating on her, I really wanted her to win as well, but just a really unfortunate incident. Come back stronger, Jorji!
There are more than good enough ways to prove and prevent these incidents. It’s just that BWF is uptight about admitting its own shortcomings for the fear of losing credibility.
There are plenty of officials around there to notice where she was pointing to, keep an eye and kick them out. It’s not just the line judges and umpires who are part of the organising team. It’s the whole notion of “umpires word is final” with no recourse to even prevent this in the future that is the problem.
I can understand letting the game continue and take the umpires word as final in this game, but if you can’t admit there was an issue there and there are zero steps take to remove that person from the stadium, then the organisation has failed at its core job.
@@AnanthapadmanabhaKurup ofc there are ways to prove and prevent, what I mean is there's no way to prove it in THAT moment in time during the match. If the umpire obliged to Tunjung's protest and redo the point, this will most likely be abused by other player, for example to stop the rally during a losing rally.
Finally i found someone who share the same pov as mine. It is sad she lose after fought well. But a great player shall overcome any obstacles and hardships. I also urge that bwf shall address this issue seriously.
@TheBTada, I agree about this point. I am not saying the point should have been reversed. But my point is that if this happened multiple times in the same match, which it did in this case, the fact that the last point created this controversy is a direct result of inaction from the organisers. Why wait till the last moment to kick them out? Feigning ignorance shouldn’t be acceptable. Everyone is made aware of these things before they enter an arena. If you don’t know, then you shouldn’t be there. As simple as that.
That space is for the competition to take place, not for amateur “photographers” to practice shooting on a shitty phone camera. I’m saying this as both an amateur badminton player and an amateur photographer. Phones are tool, and you should be held liable for the damage you cause when using the tool. Some poor soul who put their blood, sweat and tears into getting to that place shouldn’t have to pay for an idiots lack of sense, just cause that idiot spent a few pounds getting a damn ticket.
I repeat, I will never ask for that point to be reversed, cause it’s done. But until I see actual measures taken to prevent it from happening after the first time the player pointed it out, I’m gonna say the organisers are just not good enough.
The umpire can't see but the he can call out to the stadium if the person continue, will send the person out of the stadium. Just like football, the referee can ask the security to sent out anyone who influences the game.

I would say this is not the umpires fault or the poor planning of the all england team. In many tournaments there will be flashlights accidentally and they couldn’t know that the person was (most likely) doing it on purpose. The umpire had to focus on the match and didn’t even see the flashlight since after Tunjung pointed it out, the person turned the flashlight off. It is just completely disrespectful of the person that turned on the flashlight and should be banned bwf future tournaments.
Once the shuttle is on play, the game shall continue. Sideline rules indicated for the fans are discussed before any game starts. Upon instances such as shown in the video, the umpire will address the fans to follow the sideline rules, giving them a warning on their first offense and removing them from the said tournament if still not following the rules. On the side of the players, it really affects their focus but they know for sure that stopping the rally is not the way to win a point.
