[Pau:] "Well, this next song, I said that I was never going to play it live because it is a very personal song, but seeing you all here together, it is incredible to think that there are 8,000 people here right now who are watching us, and honestly, I am kind of sick, my voice is not that good, but I want to sing this song to you."

This was a super personal song for Paulina...she said on condition that they never play it live she would allow it on the Error album...Then seeing 8000 fans coming to see them she wanted to perform it for them as a 'thank you'...

A song she swore she would never sing in public, since it is so personal to her and emotional, but did so because of the 8000 person sellout at this concert and how special it was to her that they all came and packed the venue!

Exactly. That was essentially what she was saying in Spanish at the beginning. And once she started, and the crowd was singing along, she asked the audience to let her sing it.

Pau, the drummer, on piano, singing a song she swore to never play live, because it is too painful for her. The origin is still mysterious, and that's OK. She had the flu, all 3 did, and still gave 110% for 8000 fans in Mexico City (elev 7400 feet!) This is probably the only time it will ever be played live, it is just too hard for her to get through, and that's why she cries.
    We do too.

This was an incredibly poignant moment in the lore of The Warning. This was a complete surprise. This is a song that The Warning Army thought that they would never hear performed live. Famously, when they were finishing the Error album, the record label really wanted one more song. She had written this song after the loss of a friend and never intended for it to be recorded. She was convinced to put it on the album but only with the understanding that she would never play it live. It was the last track on Error and was listed as a "bonus track". Pau recorded it, sitting at the piano in the family home. The recording was played in the 2022 Teatro Metropolitan concerts as an intermission during which the girls changed their outfits from all black to white. It is a very sentimental personal song to her and the fact that she played it was a complete surprise to all TW fans everywhere. At the beginning she explains that she said she would never play it live but wanted to for the 8000 fans that came to see them. This song followed her playing Black Holes on the piano, another emotional song for her and I believe that she was planning to play Breathe also but also had the ability to decide at that moment that she wouldn't if she felt that she emotionally couldn't. On the playlists they had on stage, it was listed as "Black Holes/B" so as not to give away the surprise.

The Warning are sisters from Monterrey, Mexico who have played concerts in Mexico City. The Warning are: Daniela Villarreal, guitar; Paulina V., drums; Alejandra V., bass.
FYI: all three are classically trained pianists and performed recitals at the ages of 5 or 6.
This song about a childhood friend of hers who died. She said in the beginning that she was never going to perform "Breathe" live because it was so personal for her, but she did it for the sold out Pepsi Center CDMX of 8k who loved them.

Please stop spreading this rumor. At no time, never, has Pau said this was a song about a deceased friend. The closest she's ever given to an explanation of this song is that she called it a anxiety attack set to music. But too many people are incorrectly spreading falsehoods about this song. It is NOT about the loss of a friend.

I don't speak Spanish but according to the auto-translated closed captions that are available on the video, here's what she says at the beginning:
"Well, that next song, I have said that I was never going to play it live because it is a very personal song, but seeing you all gathered here, it is incredible to think that there are 8,000 people here right now who love us, and honestly, my voice is half sick. It's not great, but I want to sing this song"

There are possibly several reasons why she was crying. First would be the background of the song, which was written about her feelings regarding the death of a close friend. Second, the crowd of 8,000 people were singing along, supporting Pau through it all. Third, Pau had just played and sung Black Holes, with a string instrument accompaniment - possibly the best version of the song, ever. Finally, the Pepsi Center concert was a special event celebrating the 10th anniversary of The Warning playing as a band. There were several special moments in the show that were emotional. It was a huge night for them and for the fans, as well. So much so that, when tickets for February's concert in the 10,000 person National Auditorium went on sale, they all sold out within hours. (In one video, I think that Pau says they sold out in 1-hour, but my Spanish translation is terrible.) They added a 2nd show, a few nights later and that one also sold out.

I loved your reaction and insightful comments. Some of this may be review for you but it can't hurt!
This is a power trio of Mexican sisters. They just celebrated their 10th anniversary as a band, and currently are only in their late teens and early twenties. They started in grade school! They came onto the worldwide scene with their version of Metallica's Enter Sandman when they were only 14, 12, and 9! That TH-cam video went viral and was just the beginning of what was to come.
Time to learn the girls' names! Dany is the lead singer and guitarist, age 24. Pau is drummer and can be second lead singer, also does backups, age 22. Ale is the bassist and backup singer, age 19. All three also play piano as they are classically trained! Their full names are Daniela, Paulina, and Alejandra Villarreal.
Many of us became hooked on the Warning with their two Tedx performances in 2016 and 2017. For further reactions, I would also use the Teatro Metropolitan 2022 concert. It was professionally recorded so the audio and video were phenomenal. There are many of their best songs in that concert. And more currently some new ones from their coming 4th album in June. Enjoy the rabbit hole as they have over 400 videos on their channel and over 65 original songs. You've been warned!

The thing you need to understand about TW is that they have not one but two very capable lead singers. Pau is the one you call on for the most deeply emotional songs. Check out 23, Revenant, and her home recording of Radiohead's Creep.

She is the drummer, but also the main composer and lyricist, the lead vocalist on about 20% of their songs, backup vocals on all the other songs and as you can see she also learned classical piano. BTW her two sisters also can play piano and sing.

This is an extra track on their "Error" album. Pau (yes, the drummer) said she would only include it on the album if she never had to sing it live. It's about a friend who drowned and is very personal for Pau. She was sick with the flu but she wanted to sing it for the 8000 adoring fans at that show. Her voice wasn't up to par because she was sick, but she powered through and when the crowd began to sing with her she was overwhelmed with emotion. That's why she cried at the end.

While they had played for much larger crowds before, those were always the other band's fans. They were headlong this show, so it meant so much to them to have 8000 people there to see THEM. So she decided to play this song for them. Breathe is a personal song about the loss of a friend, and she had no intention of singing it in public ever. So when the crowd started to sing with her, she asked them to stop, she needed to sing it. By the end, they couldn't hold back, and she became overwhelmed. It wrecks me every time.

The very foundation of classic rock was about connecting to people with your emotions. You don't need to hit the high notes in the 6th scale or the lower ones in the 2nd octave to be a great rock singer. All that mattered was what an artist was saying and how she was saying it. Paulina Villareal aka Pau embodies that tenet of classic rock. She has this rare ability to tug at our heartstrings while delivering her dark metaphorical ballads that she had been writing over the past decade.
Across cultures some of the best songs have been born out of pathos. And The Warning released Breathe in black & white to drive home that melancholy.
    Pau, pathos, poignancy...
"I try to reach over the endless waves
Can't call for help, so I'll just call my name
But not even I can hear
I'll just disappear without a trace"
How desperately desolate can a person be to say - Can't call for help, so I'll just call my name?
"I try my very best to stay afloat
But there's something down there that just wants me close
And I beg myself to breathe
But there's nothing within reach now
Is it so wrong, wrong to want to be alright?!
    Perfect in pain
It's the same all the time!"
How helplessly helpless can someone be?

It is remarkable to me that they learned it so well as to be able to write beautiful songs and perform them in English. Even when working, they speak Spanish between themselves.
