As a child, he had a rabbit he'd pet to console himself. His dad got angry and threw the rabbit against a wall, killing it.

I can say that as an autistic person, when you receive devastating news, it’s pretty difficult to react to it like the average person. Sometimes you don’t even react at all at and some people think you’re selfish when in reality you’re dealing with it on the inside because you don’t know how to properly display your emotions. For me, it’s like that.

I've recently had a heart to heart with my adult son (Aspergers), three and a half years after his dad died very suddenly. All this time I've been walking on eggshells and he's been angry with me - we've had many nasty rows. He was very close to his dad and he made me feel like the wrong parent died. He wouldn't talk about how he was really feeling until recently. He's still broken and devastated. What he needed was for me to just love him and hug him and KNOW that he did still love me and need me to be his Mum, regardless of how things looked. I couldn't, until now, because I'm still grieving too and I was trying to avoid conflict - I really felt our relationship would never recover, which broke my heart. We have really turned a corner now and can talk easily again, about his dad too! I'm so thankful and happy that our relationship is restored. ❤

@@lynnatk50 oh my goodness, I am so sorry for your loss. Neither you or your son deserve to go through such an immeasurable amount of pain. I can tell that you were doing everything in your power to make sure that your son would feel better and as a parent, that is the best thing you can ever offer them. Just know that your efforts are never in vain because a parent that has a child with autism or Asperger’s can be some of the most challenging moments of their life. It will have its mixtures of ups and downs. And I’m also really sorry that your relationship suffered because of it. The best thing anyone can do for their loved one during trying times is to let them know that you’re always there for them no matter what. I hope you and your son feel better soon. ❤️

I'm the same. Sort of... I was in college, but home for the summer. My mom, step-dad, sister, and I, and my Uncle, who worked out of the country (we had to plan around his schedule. It was June) , we were at my grandma's house to clean it out. She had passed in February. My mom and step-dad had to handle everything just them, my Uncle and I both could not get flights in time to be at the funeral.
My stepmom called and said that our grandma on the other side was failing and we needed to get up there stat if we wanted to say goodbye. It was an 8 hour drive north. My sister and I were ready in like 15 minutes. Our other aunt was going to take us so our mom could keep working. Our cousin had a 2 or 3 year old child (I was 22 or 23, so she couldn't have been more than 18! We hadn't seen them in years and years....) , and it took her and her mom 3 hours to get across town to where we were. Like a 20 minute drive. I know prepping a toddler to go on a longer trip takes a lot of planning, but at the same time in a situation like that, you grab tons of extra and sort out what you really need later. (I currently have 2 teenagers, so I've been there)
We missed getting to say goodbye by less than an hour. 😢 I'm 45 now and it still gets to me.

I was eating popcorn one time and the crown of my tooth broke. I looked at it in my hand and felt the tooth with my tongue. There was such sensitivity that I started to panic. My mind went blank and I started shaking and crying and hitting myself in the head. At the time, I had no insurance or very much money to pay for my tooth to be fixed. After this clip where the dad and Shaun talk, the dad essentially tells Shaun he’s a failure, wishes he wasn’t born, how much Shaun ruined his life, etc. Also, when Shaun was young he had a pet rabbit who essentially acted as an unofficial ESA for him. The dad threw the bunny against the wall and killed it in a fit of rage.

My best friend is autistic and so is my little brother. They both have very different behaviours but have never shown any type of reaction like this to anything. Why did this only cross his mind at that point? Why was this not considered in advance?
Being a parent, a responsible parent, is considering these thing sin advance so that you are not left in this situation where you have to fight an autistic child in the wilderness to get him to comply with your desires.

It’s kind of hard with neurodivergent people tho. To us it will seem mean. Bc when you aren’t neurodivergent you won’t understand how certain things will make us feel. Physical touch being probably the most sensitive part. So yes, most of parents and society will say he did a good thing, but he could’ve been better at trying to understand why he is the way that he is. Forcing someone to do something (especially neurodivergent people) will create more trauma. Hence needing support animals or therapy/medication.

Basically the younger guy (Shaun) is autistic and when he was younger his dad used to abuse him and treat him badly. He also had a bunny that used to calm him down but his dad killed it when he got mad. Here his dad is dying and Shaun is finally forgiving him. At the end the older guy Shaun basically looks up to like a father and Shaun got overwhelmed by his dad's death and to cope his foot started shaking which he didn't like.

That's great. Have one too. Her father's side of the family refuse to believe it, they say it's developmental delay and I'm raising her wrong.
She didn't like visiting them (they force her to act "normal") but she adores my family. After getting help and getting her to interact with people and her environment in a better way, they're all like "told you she'll outgrow it". When she has bad days or displays behaviour they find "wrong", they lecture me on how to "correct" her.
It was so frustrating, but I've learnt to just ignore them as they blab.

As an autistic myself, I had to watch as someone passed in front of me, my grandmother died just before I was gonna call an ambulance for her as she wasn’t well for the past few days, then she just fell and passed, I was in a panicked state and even though I called the ambulance and nearby family to help me it was too late, I just sort of broke down, at first I was crying my heart out when it was announced, then my emotions just got, locked out, I barely spoke or talked to anyone about it for days and even prayed it was all a nasty dream, so seeing this kinda reminded me of that, as an autistic person I emote and act differently from others and even other autistics
Seeing this reminded me of that and it’s honestly perfect how this side of grief in a autistic person is shown

But also his child was clearly having an autistic meltdown and he didn’t seem to recognize or accommodate that in any way, so yes there is a problem with this clip in my opinion.

When my gran died, my cousin who had grown up with me said she had never seen me the way I was when we had the news, we didn’t know I had autism then but it makes sense, I didn’t get on with many people but my gran was special, she was like a second mother to me, I could go to her with almost any issue I had for example as a young boy I didn’t want the doctor going near my testicles ( he wanted to make sure I didn’t have lumps ) I refused ( may have had a fit to refuse, I was young and I don’t remember ) so rather than getting forced to have the doctor check, I asked my gran to check because though it was still embarrassing, she was one of the most special people in my life and I trusted her
I miss you granny ( yes I call her granny and I’m 35, I don’t care what you think, just because she has been gone for 12 years it means nothing, no change )

The time after Shaun forgives his dad, Shaun’s dad calls him weak even from his position (about to die). His dad is a true monster. Poor Shaun. He doesn’t just call him weak he was manipulating Shaun and showing his weakness to make Shaun think he changed. None of Shaun’s forgiveness meant anything to him.

As an autistic person, growing up with parents who punish 'autistic behavior', it's VERY HARD to forgive. I have no contact with my parents, because they've continued to be verbally abusive into my adult years. I worry about how their deaths will affect me. I miss them sometimes... But then I realize I'm missing who I WISHED they had/could've been. 😢

The Self Injurious Behavior is what broke my heart. I work with kids that are high needs autistic and seeing when they are upset to the point where they physically start hurting themselves always makes me want to cry. Because at that moment, they don’t know how to express themselves and that’s the only way that works for them.
Emotions are huge and sometimes they just overwhelm people.

For some neurodivergent people, it's a way to 'stim' or process. My sister has autism. She does something similar to try and calm down after being overwhelmed by bouncing her legs.

@@Krysta1RoseI have that. People always accuse me of doing it on purpose. (Also. Not autistic… I think. I have some Similar traits to it. But never diagnosed.)

Neurodivergent people can be easily overstimulated or overwhelmed. This shaking is a way of relieving that tension rather than through an outburst. You often see autistic ppl with tics where they stim or vocalise or unfortunately less appropriate outbursts.

Also, as an autistic female, we don't show emotions right away because we deal with it in our own way. It doesn't mean we are unfeeling, or don't have emotions. Infact, i feel alot more than anyone in my family and sometimes i get laugh at crying over something insignificant to them when it had meant something to me. So when i cry, i usually cry alone, that way I'm not made fun of
