Judging by the comments people caught a totally different tone to the song than I did. To be honest we were having a blast on stream so it may have had me in a silly mood lol I thought it was just about a cheating girlfriend. At least you know I'm capturing the first reactions for these :)
It was funny seeing you to find that humor. Not sure if I was laughing with you at the moment but now that I look at it again, it is sort of silly to hear the obvious in such a calming melody. Perhaps this one was written with a tongue in cheek style. Even the Eagles, themselves, have said before that they don't know what their songs are about. Ambiguity makes their music timeless. Loving your reactions here.
I love the first take aspect of your reactions. You were mostly right about Hotel california. However, the danger of a first take is that expressing a meaning before you have heard the whole story is dicey.
To further sort of , further explain my thoughts on this song. It is not about a gold digging bitch, but rather a woman who made bad choices early and got stuck. The firey eyes are not those of a bad boy, they are the eyes of someone who is consumed with her and not the guy with hands as cold as ice.. He is the guy she should have been with, like the boy she knew in school, that she now regrets dismissing. And THAT is why she is drinking and looking at the stars. She knows she screwed up and cannot escape. Ala, you can check out any thime you like but you can never leave. Also, You did not catch the double antendre in HC. Checking out is a popular euphemism for dying.
yh I think I didn't catch the tone on this one, we were having a blast on stream so it may have had me in a silly mood lol I thought it was just a story of a lying girlfriend
@@SyedRewinds Snoozerpoo's right. Everyone involved knows they're "living in a lie" but each one doesn't see a clean way out of the traps they set for themselves chasing the what they initially thought they wanted. Old dude knows he was buying young love. Young chick knows she was selling herself for comfort. Maybe the young dude still believes in his dreams, but the experienced ones recognize he's still living a fantasy.
Syed's first time hearing song, lighten up. It's just a song. Glen Frey said they were in a bar watching women trying to pick up rich men, and said look at those lyin eyes. That is what inspired the song. Watch history of the Eagles.
Actually this song is about the members going out and all the women that throw themselves at them. They talk about it. All the plastic women in LA with old men at home, but throwing themselves at the members of the band 🥴
I like how they point out that she is lying to both of them at the same time by repeating the chorus after everything she tells them. Then, in the end, she is alone and she is lying to herself trying to convince herself that she is happy.
I have said for decades that “Lyin Eyes” is my favorite Eagles song and I can’t even tell you why. It’s something about the constant movement of it, the cyclical rhythm. Or the storytelling, the sheer wordsmithery. The sadness to it. It just hits me smack dab in my soul every time. Great choice and reaction. ❤️
I saw the Eagles in concert just two years ago, absent the wonderful Glenn Frey. They were old men fanned out across the stage in a line of guitars with Don Henley on the drums behind them. And they didn't miss a beat. Each song was a masterpiece of musicianship. It brought me to tears over and over again. For them it was always the music. No backup singers, no autotune. Just the music they made together. I came away from it saying it was the best concert I'd ever been to & I'm an old dog who saw Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and the Doors back in the day. The Eagles were and are a great band.
Their song “Take it Easy” has one of the most iconic lines in rock for my generation. Everyone knows it and can sing it. That happened with Beatles songs and Dylan songs….and with Eagles songs.
Well, 99% of that is Jackson Browne. All Glenn contributed to TIE was "It's a girl, My Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me" (great line that it is).
The Eagles is one of those bands, like Fleetwood Mac, where the main singer changes depending the song. Consider checking out "Desperado" and "Take it Easy."
'Take it to the limit' is another vocal masterpiece with Randy Meisner on lead vocals. Another band to check out is Linkin Park. Rock with a mix of hip hop, think you will love them.
Eagles are/were so keen with their lyrics and vivid describing every day relationships all around whether it be friendships or relationships of passion. Simple but masters of putting it all into words. No one will ever be even close to them.
You mentioned the chorus changing meaning as applied to each verse, that is a fairly common thing in country music, the play on words of the chorus and often the title of the song. Tim McGraw's "Don't take the girl" comes to mind. I think Eagles music was wildly popular partly because they drew from many influences and blended them in a very proficient way musically and lyrically. Really enjoying your channel!
IMHO, there best ever song is by even another singer, Randy Misner and the 1977 live version of *"Take it to the Limit"* is one of the best live performances I have ever seen, period. Randy was with Poco, left to form the Eagles.
It's actually a sad story of a woman who reaches for the superficial material things in life and not surprisingly gets exactly what she deserves (sort of) because shallow choices lead to a shallow existence.
You, my friend, are very intelligent. You dig deep, and you have amazing ituition of what the lyrics are painting. You are an excellent understander of the hearts of the artists and the players in the song's script.
This is about a girl who is being "kept" by a rich old man and she wants to break away and find real love but I guess keep her lifestyle. Really poignant and descriptive, about how people make choices and put themselves in chains. Beautiful lyrics and harmonies, one of my favorites by them.
It's the lyrics, which are smart, thoughtful, evocative, and tangible; It's the arrangements, especially in the vocal harmonies - but listen to the guitars play off of each other; and, above all of that, there's a clear connection between the message of the lyrics, the mood of the music, and the tone of the vocalist(s). A great collection of gifted instrumentalists who could all -sing-.
Now you need to hear Timothy Schmit's vocals on "I Can't Tell You Why" and Joe Walsh's on "Pretty Maids All In A Row" to get all four main vocalists of The Eagles.
The story behind this song is that Henley and Frey used to hang out at Dan Tana's Italian Restaurant and Bar in West Hollywood before going next door to the famous Troubador club. They would often sit there and make up stories about the lives of the people that they saw at the bar. Very often they would see young beautiful women with much older and obviously wealthy men. They knew that these girls were with the men not for love but for the money and power that comes with that type of relationship. They imagined that the girls would often step out on their sugar daddy to find the love and romance that their life is missing.
The "guitars" that you liked after the line "She thinks about a boy she knew in school" are actually mandolins played by Eagles member Bernie Leadon, who is a talented multi-instrumentalist (guitar, banjo, mandolin, steel guitar, dobro) and also played in bands like Dillard & Clark, The Flying Burrito Brothers and (briefly) The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
The Eagles are an ultimate band for that era.. "Take it to the Limit" is probably my favorite song of all time with my favorite single lyric. "If it all fell to pieces tomorrow, would you still be mine?"
I view this as exhibiting the country music influence in the music of the Eagles. This kind of story is not unusual in country music. That's one of the charms of country music - slice of life stories.
I agree with the previous commenter. I’ve been enjoying this tune for damn near fifty years and it has never made me laugh. True, the lyrics are very clever, but the story is certainly melancholy if not sad. And…I’ve never thought of the lady as a “gold digger”. So many people crave passion and settle, instead, on stability…then crave the missing passion. After a lifetime of relationships I understand the profound truth that this song conveys. Thanks for reaction!
There are a lot of Eagles songs worth listening to. As a couple people have already mentioned "One of The Nights" and "Take it Easy" are just a couple.
For me the song is simply about a woman who used her 'tools' and married for money (her plan) and will not give it up for anything but she receives gratification from outside of that marriage, her life is miserable as sin because of the lie she's living and the choice she made, even though she ended up with the riches. I've always considered it as a song sung by someone who knows her from school, maybe someone who really loved her.
The lines make you chuckle because they are true. That one "I guess every form of refuge has it's price." So true -so true. And the first two lines of the song are so true too. Everyone know this is about a girl who married an old man for his money and the price was that she has to cheat on him to get the love she wants. This and Already Gone are IMO the two best Eagles songs with lyrics-other than Hotel California. All 3 are way above the other songs IMO only.
One of the million reasons why The Eagles are unbelievable. They sing about simple, real life and have a great way of putting it in song as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Stevie Ray Vaughn and the rest of the best do.
I enjoyed your reactions to "Lyin' Eyes" by the Eagles. You mentioned the themes on the Hotel California LP and I recommend the final track, "The Last Resort". An allegory starting with the great line "She came grom Providence, the one in Rhide Island" than travels west. My favorite song on the album.
My all time favourite Eagles song. Bought the album in 1975 when it came out (One Of These Nights) and to this day I still never get tired of hearing this song. It's actually my alarm on my phone in the morning. Glenn Frey had such an easy voice to listen to. Henley is brilliant also. Actually every one of them could sing. Back when musicians actually played their instruments and could sing live. One of my two favourite albums is still The Eagles Greatest Hits 1971-1975 - Every single track on it is fantastic. Best of My Love, Tequila Sunrise, Lyin' Eyes, Take It Easy, Take it to the Limit, Desperado - can't even pick a favourite track on it other than this one.
Lots of differences between the Eagles on Hotel California and the band when Lyin’ Eyes was recorded a bit earlier. They added rock guitarist Joe Walsh who replaced Bernie Leadon. They started out together as the backing band for country/rock singer Linda Ronstadt and recorded her third album with her. My favorite album of theirs was Desperado which was kind of a theme album set in the Old West of the US. They evolved into a pretty great rock band.
Since you like the lyrics of "Lyin' Eyes" so much, I HIGHLY recommend that you listen to: "Take It Easy" by the Eagles next!!! While the first verse in it is GREAT, the second verse, after the chorus, is one of my ALL TIME favorite verses in a song that I've ever listened to because it is just so lyrical and descriptive and brings a smile to my face every single time I listen to it! Enjoy!
The Eagles is my favorite band right now I say now because it changes every now and then. But everytime I listen to them it is always smooth as silk❤ Another band you might like because they are in the same vein as The Eagles and it's The Band I think you'll love them.
amazing your comments on this magical song. it is so simplistic and to fit it in to modern day scenarios takes imagination. yet its all true, now and then
You should also listen to “New Kid In Town,” also sung by Glenn Frey. It doesn’t tell a specific story as such, but the lyrics are very evocative and moody. Great song.
The song started with Frey , was spending time in a bar . He saw a fancy girl walked into the bar , wuth an elderly guy . That , gave him an idea to write the new song at that time , which was titled lying eyes . Nice you picked up on how guitar driven the eagles were. In this tune you’re hearing the brilliant Tele work of don felder in perfect sync with the vocals. So good. Crazy good.
Ranks right up next to Hotel California as one of their best songs with the great lyrics. The opening line is one of my all time favorites-because it is so true. Not just city girls but beautiful girls.
This is not a funny song. It’s a sad song about a girl who prostitutes herself in order to obtain material objects via a rich old man. But it doesn’t make her happy. She is lonely and sad.
yh I think i didn't catch the tone on this one, we were having a blast on stream so it may have had me in a silly mood lol I thought it was just a bout a cheating girldfriend
All members of the band Eagles sing lead in their own right on the Eagles albums you will find they each sing lead songs and the same with all their live perfomances, all of their songs are very well written and have meaning. In my opinion they have always been the tightest band ever!
Glenn Frey sings this one and he also wrote it he and Don Henley the drummer write the majority of their songs but Joe Walsh also writes some of the music and sings lead as does Timothy B Schmidt the bass player
I think this is a song about regret and self loathing. The woman in this song is very sad; she did not find the happiness that she sought and in the end is worse off than she had been. Check out the Atlanta Rhythm Section, Jimmy Buffett and the Zac Brown Band.
ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) is pretty amazing too! None of their songs sound the same and have a different feel to them. They don't sound like any pacific genre at all.
Its a very sad story really .. I knew a girl in our young gang. We nearly got together as a permanent pair a couple of times, She was a very affectionate and very attractive girl . Then she disappeared from our world. We heard she had met some guy nearly twenty years older who was well set up, Good job big house etc,, Then not very long later we heard she was dead by suicide,--- Stunned, and asking what we could have done ,Which was nothing----These are often very sad stories,
I think this is both beautiful & funny as well. Had an old girlfriend that'd been cheating on me. She didn't know I'd found out. I took her out to dinner one last time, stood up, went to the jukebox to play a song. I sat back down & told her that the next song coming up I was dedicating specifically to her. She thought that it would be some kind of romantic song or something, but it was this. The look on her face was priceless when this came on. No regrets for me. As far as I'm concerned, this is the ORIGINAL diss track....
Henley and Frey were sitting in a restaurant eating. An attractive woman was drinking alone at the bar. Frey said. "i wonder what her story is?". They sat down and wrote this song that night. Immense talent. it's 6 1/2 minutes long and they don't repeat a single verse.
Men always talk about women as gold diggers. Men are just as bad, but their version of gold is usually hunting a piece of arm candy or hot young thing. Interesting that it is 2022 and we’re still blaming Eve for that damn apple.
Judging by the comments people caught a totally different tone to the song than I did. To be honest we were having a blast on stream so it may have had me in a silly mood lol I thought it was just about a cheating girlfriend. At least you know I'm capturing the first reactions for these :)

"One of These Nights" and "Desperado" are classic Eagles songs that lived on the airwaves in the 70s and instantly summon up fond memories.
Never gets old..
I've seen The Eagles twice, their guitars, harmonies from 6 members is so incredible and goosebumps the whole 2 to 3 hour concerts.

I play bass in a band and we play this song it’s got such a great rhythm to it is kind of coming even though the song is pretty stinking sad
Same.
" and I can’t even tell you why." I see what you did there.
Yup totally agree , so many people miss just how good this song is lyrically , musically and the story is captivating
I also like how each verse she lies to a new person and each time she fails to hide the lie: first to her husband, then to her lover, then to herself.

Henley and Frey were master lyricists.

Ranks right up next to Hotel California as one of their best songs with the great lyrics. The opening line is one of my all time favorites-because it is so true. Not just city girls but beautiful girls.
The Eagles - Victim of Love or Life in the Fast Lane.......both great songs worthy of reacting to.

The Eagles premise with regards to who sang the song belonged to the primary songwriter.
You have a great radio voice.
Pretty much my favorite Glenn Frey sung song by the Eagles a true classic in 1975.
A lot of their songs are like this until a story Life in the Fast Lane talks about the party and drug scene in LA
Whoever writes it, sings it!❤
Saying a lot in a compact way is a gift in song writing and those guys had it ,
THE EAGLES ARE OUR STORY TELLERS OF OUR GENERATION.
That guitar is Fingers Felder and naughty boy Joe. Bass - beautiful Randy
The film that is closest is "Fracture" but with payback Anthony Hopkins is the rich old man and Billy Burke as the boy. Great film excellent story.
Its a very sad story really .. I knew a girl in our young gang. We nearly got together as a permanent pair a couple of times, She was a very affectionate and very attractive girl . Then she disappeared from our world. We heard she had met some guy nearly twenty years older who was well set up, Good job big house etc,, Then not very long later we heard she was dead by suicide,--- Stunned, and asking what we could have done ,Which was nothing----These are often very sad stories,
Once you have the lyrics in front of you you can read the situation very well & you sir said it very well (thank you)
what a song!
Great reaction maybe try “Tequila Sunrise”.
Listen to the Dutch Eagles cover of this. Fantastic
Have you done “Life In The Fast Lane” from Hotel California album yet?
Love your channel, another eagle song” Life in the Fast lane”.
The Eagles are FANTASTIC,,,top 6. 💥💥💥👍😎
Syed I need you to hit ‘the tragically hip’ locked in the trunk of a car… cause idk wtf they meant, but, it’s a killer song
Henley and Frey were sitting in a restaurant eating. An attractive woman was drinking alone at the bar. Frey said. "i wonder what her story is?". They sat down and wrote this song that night.
Immense talent. it's 6 1/2 minutes long and they don't repeat a single verse.
Just another banger from the greatest song writers in American history
Men always talk about women as gold diggers. Men are just as bad, but their version of gold is usually hunting a piece of arm candy or hot young thing. Interesting that it is 2022 and we’re still blaming Eve for that damn apple.
