Are you kidding me? What an honor to see a legend not only perform his technique, but breaks it down to such specificity that leaves you stunned. Thank you so much for posting and sharing this wealth of knowledge.
one of the best instructionals I've seen with so many crucial details including where to hold your fingers. wow! Illiadis needs to do more videos. Thank you Travis!
It really does help if you're one of use. But there are a lot of judo players on the circuit who do a version of this. If you work on it I'm sure you could do it as well.
Great suggestion! I just shot a whole dvd on my Ippon Seoi Nage where I go over a lot of those concepts. Illiadis also has a dvd explaining those concepts for his style of judo. You should check them out at www.judofanatics.com
Definitely one of the best ever . This channel is great Travis is also one of the best to step on the mat so to have him showing techniques that he used and other judoka is awesome.
It's good to see techniques broken down step by step. I like to visualise all techniques in a self defence situation. Some of the judo techniques I've come across, I find hard to accept as I feel they're impractical in such scenarios but others I think, they make perfect sense.
This is so good... One more time, thanks... This channel is giving me more weapons, feels like it was build for me because I find new options for my grip style, every single day... Thanks Travis!
I was actually just thinking of exploring that big turning step he used and maybe adding it into my game. I know it's popular, but I've never used it. This should be a good way to start incorporating it into my game.
He does it here at the 2004 Athens Olympics: * 1st round at 3:55: th-cam.com/video/WWvnN9YPjUk/w-d-xo.html * and the semi final he mentions in the video, at 1:10: th-cam.com/video/0BW8cmdcUEI/w-d-xo.html
Aw Yeah!!! The great Iliadis. Rio '07. He had some big throws. A standing Kata Garuma.in which his Uke was fully horizontal above his head before he turned it over for the perfect Ippon. He barely lost that championship n Golden Score to the Georgian with that powerful over the shoulder belt grip that I never could figure out Cheers.
I appreciate that Illiadis himself refers to it as Seoi-Nage but if you look at other YT instructionals others refer to it as seoi-otoshi, even when referencing Illiadis technique.Craig Fallon (RIP) for instance;th-cam.com/video/X0Ay8JC0NHk/w-d-xo.html. But you bring up an interesting point - some make the distinction between seoi-nage vs. seoi-otoshi based on foot placement and stance (feet inside vs. one inside, one outside as per tai-otoshi) but others such as yourself and indeed some Kodokan instructionals make the distinction based on whether uke is lifted (nage) or pulled down (otoshi). But many versions of tai-otoshi and it's morote equivalent (stance wise) use the calf against shin "leg pop" variation to pop uke up and then down over the outstretched leg. And in any case it can also be argued that the "otoshi" descriptor in these throws refers to Tori's dropping action, not ukes (even in other Kodokan vids).Bottom line - it's a grey area! - and of course Nage just means throw so isn't every throw "Nage"? :-)One thing for sure though - Illiadis' technique has both hands gripping so it can't be Ippon-Seoi. Double hand gripping lapels is Morote-Eri as you rightly point out and it's still largely a shoulder throw so Morote-Eri-Seoi. I prefer in my coaching to refer to the stepping dropping action as otoshi and teach this throw as a mixture of morote seoi upper body and tai-otoshi lower body (sort of - in actuality the outstretched leg steps deeper to block as opposed to conventional tai-otoshi). 3rd Dan USAJudo Certified Coach BTW.That's the fun in judo - once you get into these hybrid grip variation techniques we can all argue about what strictly to call the throw based on it's relationship to other more conventional techniques, but often grey areas exist.
Y'all seem like the kind of Judo students who would be trying to intellecutalise Judo, and while you were doing so guys like Ilias would be picking you up and slamming you on to the mat lol! To re-purpose an old boxing idiom "All the time, they're thinking. And while they're thinking, I'm throwing 'em"
@@iorekby that saying doesn't work very well with judo, almost if not all high level judokas are judo nerds. There are definitly some that have internalized judo only into their body and not at all in their minds, but they can't compete in high level tournaments, because they'll be out smarted. Nerding about details like this also often ends up improving ones understanding of the techniques, which often gives synergy and inspiration in other areas of ones judo skills.

Wow, grip like Yama Arashi, footwork like Ashi Guruma, but the outcome is a Seoi Nage! Brilliant! Thank you Master Iliadis!
Illiadis is not only a great judoka, but also an excellent instructor! Thanks for the video.
Wow, a legend of judo!
Yes he is!
The legend indeed!
Ilias have been teaching this eri seio nage to my club here in Greece .... ultra power tech! Our back hearts until now😂😂😂😂😂
It's such a strong throw!
Super . He used the same grip as for Yama Arashi and a very interesting foot work, but one has to be Ilias or Travis to pull this off 👍

Travis Stevens
I also use this grip for Tai Otoshi. Learnt it in the Vlad Koulikov instructional.
@@tomwalker389 send me the link please, I love tai otoshi and aim to learn more on tai otoshi
This is great, we would like to see you doing in depth explanation, from basic to randori and opportunity applications. Thank you Sensei.

No problem. Glad you liked it!
We do loads of this at our club and just call it the Illiadis throw. Great instructional video, thanks

I love how he breaks it all down.....great teaching skills.
This video is Gold! Thank you!
Αγαπάμε Ηλία ,είσαι ο καλύτερος

Whoa!! It's like a Yama Arashi plus seoi which is pretty dope to be honest. The pivot to backstep looks unstoppable to counter
almost unstoppable when done right.
Love your channel awesome guest and techniques keep them coming
I'm glad you like the channel.
All these videos have been very helpful.

Even with the broken English, what a fantastic sensei.
Excelente canal....com legenda seria perfeito
VERY well explained.
He is such a great judoka I learned a lot from him during our time together at TSV Abensberg
the principle of extension!just before the throw it looks like a karate stance
When asked a question in russian it made me smile. Unexpected and funny.
Great stuff!
Glad you think so!
Awesome technic
0:12 I will always start laughing wehen I watch this part 😂
How come my nigga
1:52 Wow, he speaks russian: «Как называется вот это?»
He born in Georgia...
That's your THUMB 👍 not your finger. Good technique by the way 👏
1:52 one of world’s top Greek judoka suddenly talks in Russian to American guy
He's partner speaks perfect Russian. It was his first language. English is a second or third language for both of them. Good catch.
@Mr. Frank 'forever 40' Garret I think he changed his nationality, and probably lied about his age too :P
Ilia's is from Georgia...
He does it look so easy! Very good technique!
