- Chris Berman and Tom Jackson host ESPN NFL Primetime for 2005 Divisional Sunday, where the Pittsburgh Steelers upset Peyton manning and the 14-2 Indianapolis Colts 21-18 and the Carolina Panthers upset the Chicago Bears 29-21.
The Steelers became the first #6 playoff seed (since the league expanded to a 12-team playoff format in 1990) to defeat a #1 seed, and also the first #6 seed to reach a conference championship game. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning threw for 290 passing yards and a touchdown, but it wasn't enough to win.
The Panthers recorded 434 yards of total offense, and avenged a 13-3 regular season defeat by the Bears, to advance to their third NFC Championship Game in their eleven-year existence. Carolina receiver Steve Smith caught 12 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns, the first coming 55 seconds into the contest, and rushed for 26 yards. Panthers kicker John Kasay contributed three second-quarter field goals, while quarterback Jake Delhomme threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns. Although the Panthers lost key running back DeShaun Foster to a broken ankle in the third quarter, they still held off the Bears.

AFC was so loaded in 2005. The #6 was 11-5 Pittsburgh the #5 was 12-4 Jags, 14-2 colts, 13-3 Broncos, patriots were 10-6 but back2back champs and Bengals pre Palmer injury were dangerous. I'd have to say it's the only time ever all 6 playoff teams were good enough to win the SB. because realistically only 2-3 teams have a chance and theres a couple teams you know can't do it
And even San Diego who missed the playoffs that year were formidable too

Jonathan Dee The One And Only they won 4 in a row from 2003-2006 and 6 of 7 from 2000-2006 (Tampa Bay the exception), but not exactly 12 in a row. Despite the AFC’s 2000 dominance, the SB’s in the decade- unlike the 80s and most of the 90s- were mostly competitive games.
Heck, the one big SB blowout of the 2000s was won by the NFC
The Bears only made the playoffs 4 times in 23 seasons from 1995-2017. They won their division and were one of the top 2 seeds in the NFC each time. They also won the NFC north in 2018 but had to settle for the 3 seed. Until 2020, Chicago hadn’t been one of the wildcard teams in the NFC since 1994. They had also only finished 2nd in their division 3 times since 1980 before this past season.

I wouldn't say either team was at the height of their powers. There were far better panthers and bears teams. Both teams were good but definitely not their best teams.
Some NFL experts said the Colts shouldn't have rested their starters during late in the season in the playoff game they looked rusty
especially since they had a undefeated season going, they could of played the starters until the perfect season was over

There was no rule about the knee on the ground when your lose the ball after possession the ref made it up and the NFL said he vfc was wrong
I love Tom Jackson's analysis I really miss him and Boomer together. He is dead on about the steelers on the road that year they had won more games on the road that year than they did at home it was destiny

Because there was less than 90 secs remaining in the game and they didn't have 3 time outs! The real question is wtf didn't Pittsburgh kneel on the ball to run the clock out? They tried getting cute, and it almost was the biggest backfire in history.

The " Cinderella " Steelers nobody believed in them. After that game, Big Ben told the reporter's " All you non believers ' C'mon in". They were the only 6th seed to make it to the Super Bowl and Win it! And it was the Final Stop in Motown Detroit for Jerome Bettis after beating the Seahawks. That was a nail biter in Indy. Good memories I was in Kentucky in Job Corps getting my high school degree and a trade and watching this game in my dorm.
Uhh, hello? The packers won super bowl 45 as the #6 seed. And they were up against the team that already accomplish this feat.

Had to revisit some of these games after the terrible comparisons people made between the 2005 Steelers and the 2021 Steelers.
Refs did everything they could to assist the Colts and they still couldn't overcome Pittsburgh!
Jill Conner They tried to fucking cheat the Steelers, it was completely conspiracy to make sure the Colts win and after Pittsburgh fired back angrier at the media cause nobody during the week wasnt talking about this game they looked past this to the other games. All the sports network got shut the fuck up after this upset. Joey Porter went off on reporters. After this there was no stopping Pittsburgh. Referees tried but failed unlike " The Nip and Tuck " game . Fuck instant replay

If Carson Palmer doesn't get hurt, the Steelers still win the Super Bowl. The Bungals were losing that game regardless. Marvin Lewis can't win a playoff game to save his life, the Bungals defense sucked that year, and name me a time Carson Palmer actually had a good postseason game

What really lost this game for the Colts was winning the coin toss and then choosing to give the ball to start the game to a team that won its final 6(?) games just to make the playoffs, and then defeating in the Wild Card Game the team that not only won the AFC North division from the Steelers, but beat the Steelers twice during the regular season. And people wonder why Tony Dungy only won one SB....
Oh, and BTW, that dislike is from me. It's been just over 15 years since this travesty of a game has been played, and it still hurts. It is still painful to watch. I haven't watched this game since the day that was originally aired, and I never will. Not even highlights. As a Peyton Manning fan, this is probably the one playoff loss that is probably still the most painful. It never should had happened. And, if this was a best 3-out-of-5 series, this Colts team would had won the next three. They were that good. If the Steelers didn't have the momentum of that winning streak from the end of the regular season, the Colts would had smashed them by *AT LEAST* 30. *AT LEAST.* Simple as that.
