Long term wise, this loss was the best thing that could happen to the Broncos. I believe if they won here, they would've eventually gotten smoked by the Packers in SB XXXI. This loss gave them that extra hunger the next year in winning it all.

Hands down, the biggest upset in the NFL since I've started watching. A second year expansion team goes in to Mile High and beats the Broncos, something only the battle hardened Steelers (who still had multiple members of the dynastic 70's teams on the roster) had ever done a dozen years earlier. NO ONE saw this coming and anyone that tries to claim otherwise is a bold faced liar. This was supposed to be, in the words of Rex Ryan, a rat kill. Instead, Mark Brunell undressed that solid Broncos defense after spotting them 12 points. It was so surgical, you would've thought THEY were the favorites. I always point back to this game as the line of delineation from the 'old NFL' of my youth where the regular season favorites just worked their way through the playoffs to the 'new NFL' where just getting in meant you had a shot.

Forgotten subplot of this game- the Denver weather on conference championship Sunday was below 0: high of 11.2, low of 0.4
Had the Broncos won, the Patriots would have had to play in below zero temperatures at night (Green Bay couldn’t have hosted the late game since the weather was barely better for a noon start at Lambeau).

This wasn’t the biggest playoff upset by point spread but it might’ve been the most shocking outcome in history. The Broncos rolled to a 13-2 record and clinched the one seed before resting players in a week 17 loss to San Diego. They were the best team in the AFC all season and they had John Elway. Meanwhile, the Jaguars got off to a 3-6 start thanks to a 1-5 record in games decided by one possession. They would then win 8 straight one score games after this one. 6 of them were by 3 points or less. They came back to defeat Baltimore twice in 3 weeks after trailing by double digits in the 4th quarter. Morton Anderson missed a game winning 30 yard FG that would’ve kept them out of the playoffs entirely. They were down 7 in the 4th quarter to the playoff tested Bills. Mark Brunell shook off a pick 6 in the 4th and led the Jaguars on 2 scoring drives to win the game the week before this one. The AFC championship was much closer than the 20-6 final score would suggest. Jacksonville was done in by turnovers and special teams errors. A blocked punt set up New England at the Jaguars 4 yard line to start the game. Brunell threw a pick at the Patriots 5 when they were down 13-6 in the 4th quarter. Then James Stewart fumbled from the Jaguars 42 with the score still 13-6 and about half of the 4th quarter remaining. Jacksonville proved it wasn’t a fluke as they compiled a 36-12 record over the next 3 years. They won 2 division titles and got back to the AFC championship game in 1999. They lost to the Titans for the 3rd time that season in the CCG and were 15-0 against the rest of the league.

Definitely the most shocking was the New York Giants beating the undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. That was the most shocking outcome in the history of the NFL. That is the biggest choke job I ever witnessed. Naturally Super Bowl III with the Colts as 18 point favorites is another., with the Joe Namath led Jets defeating the Colts 16-7.

Broncos( caught looking past the Jags here) got revenge the following year. This is the ONLY reason New England reached the SB that yr is because they didn't have to face Denver. Reminded me of 1987 when the Redskins avoided a trip to Candlestick(they would've lost to SF) and got to host the Vikings( 49ers caught looking past them) instead.

The next lesson class is in the playoffs divisional round on Saturday Jaguars and Broncos late in one of the most thrilling upsets in playoff history on NBC is : Ambush At Mile High 😑🐂🐂🐅🐅🏈. The next stop of the " Cinderella Jaguars " tour goes to the rocky mountains of Mile High with the Super Bowl favorites of Denver at 13-3 during the week the Denver Post was disrespecting the Jaguars calling them " Jagwads " and shit talking by fans and others gave Jacksonville the ammunition as they came with weapons of their own of Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell of the " Thunder and Lighting " WR combo,Brunell Natrone Means shows again they mean business as it was a dog match in a close game as the defense could catch up to Brunell, as Terrell Davis who heading to his 1st Trip to Honolulu for the pro bowl did not run the ball much and Jason Elam was horrible all day along side Jaguars wore them down all through the game even before halftime with a trick long pass to Means set the tone for this game for John Elway and the Broncos the clock struck midnight as the Jaguars punch thier ticket to the championship game, as for Elway being at 36 and time running out on his career saying " This is the most embarssing loss of his career" and it was the last game for WR Anthony Miller of Denver as class the lesson is : You can have the best record in the league and capture the division title, can be a complete failure as you witness as we say goodbye to the " Big D" logo and a new look and angry focus Broncos would come back in 1997. As for the Jaguars,Tom Coughin earn his respect like Notorious B.I.G on the " Ready To Die " album now by knocking of two top teams and try for three of the winner in the divisional of the Steelers and Patriots game on Sunday. FIN ( Dick Enberg, Phil Simms and Jim Gray, Paul Mcguire ,Beasley Reese on the call on this game 4:00 ) . Note: These two met 1st in 1995 in Week 14 and Denver escaped 31-23 .
