    discovered your channel last night, watched a bunch of your videos already. just wanted to thank you for your no-nonsense, down-to-earth reviews. i was thinking of a CJ140 for a while but this video pushed me over to order a Skyliner today, the hardest part was choosing a color (i went with the pearl gray) and hopefully receive it before spring arrives. looking forward to more great content from you.

    Thanks Chase, for doing so many comparisons on canvas tents. The wife and I are car campers primarily here in New England but we do tend to camp later into the fall. We couldn't find it within ourselves to drop $3-5k conservatively on a bed in a box on wheels to tow behind our car so replacing/upgrading our old tent and Coleman buddy style heater was the option. I was looking for a smaller canvas well tent and happened to see your reviews. We opted for the Skyliner and large Woodlander and couldn't be happier. Much appreciated.

      Sounds like you got a great setup! What a way to explore New England. I've never camped on your side of the country, but it's on my bucket list to do it in the Fall. Glad the videos were helpful.

    Springbar otta give you commission on their sales, I started watching your vids when I first started thinking about getting a hot tent.
    I've always wanted the alaknak tent from Cabela's but I grew up with springbar tents and know theyre easy to set up one person better with two, where as the Cabela's is gonna struggle with one and even two people.
    Then I checked out the springbar store and I fell in love with the skyliner. Felt way bigger and American made is something I wanna support more of.
    After watching your videos I really thought the skyliner is a no brainer and bought it, gonna set it up today and season it and see how she goes.

    Amazing review! Thanks for putting this video together. I used this video to help me decide between a Classic Jack 100 and Traveler. Took me weeks to decide as the traveler is double the price of the CJ. I ultimately went with the traveler based on your review because it’s made in the USA. I have a compact for solo trips but wanted something bigger and comfortable for when my wife and dog tag along.

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, but walk-around space would be limited. You'd likely have to place one against the far wall opposite the stove. Then 3 parallel to each other with heads or feet against the cot on the wall. Totally doable if you don't mind the coziness.

    I would prefer purchasing something made in the U.S. if the quality is as good or better even if the price is a little higher. Since the Skyliner is made in The U.S. I was considering it but sorry $$2000+ was out of my price range especially after a close inspection of the CJ 140. I’m not a tent expert but I’ve slept in more than my share of tents and the CJ 140 is my favorite so far. The Skyliner is also well made with some nice added features but in my opinion it’s not worth another $1000. Yes, this tent is heavy but it’s a base camp type of tent and not a backpacking tent. The stitching, zippers and overall quality is similar to the Skyliner and as good or better than the top competitors. If you set up the Classic Jack alongside a Skyliner and maybe a Kodiak next to each other and left them out over a long period of time based on the quality I would say that they would all last a similar amount of time. I would guess the longest lasting would be the Skyliner but not by a lot and then the classic Jack and Kodiak in that order. If you took good care of all three tents they would probably outlast your tent camping lifespan. I went over my tent carefully and the stitching, zippers, floor, poles, etc, were all well designed and durable without any defects. Just be sure to lay a tarp underneath it after checking for sharp objects, dry it out properly after each use, reapply a good fabric protector every so often, and try to avoid setting it up in a spot where the summer sun is beating down on it from sun up to sundown and the Classic Jack 140 should last a lifetime even being made in China.

    Great review again!! Are they the same compare to mold resistance?

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are both treated with an anti-mold treatment as far as I know, though I believe that treatment might be slightly different. The canvas for the Classic Jack is finished in Asia whereas the canvas for the Skyliner is finished on Georgia, USA before being shipped to SLC, Utah to be cut and sewn into a tent. So the treatment is slightly different, but both should be mold resistant.

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alexandrelabelle532 Nope, not yet! 🤞 I'm quite diligent about either packing them up totally dry at camp or taking them out at home to dry out. Plus I live in the Ard West where it's not as humid so I've had no issues with mold.

    Thanks for all your great reviews! They really aided me in my decision in purchasing the CJ140 which will be here any day now! My question at this point is do you have a preferred stove now if both were large. Versatility, balance, etc. Looking to buy a large either nomad or woodlander. The nomad with leg extensions as I wondered if floor might get too hot (also might be able to stretch a cookie sheet across them!). Thanks again for all your advice and experiences with these products and your family camping. Cheers! 🍻

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are most welcome and thank you so much for watching my videos! I'm super excited for you and the CJ140. You're gonna love it! As far as stoves go, I definitely prefer the large size but the Nomad vs Woodlander pretty much comes down to which one you like the looks of more. I wouldn't worry about the nomad being too low and too close to the floor at all. As long as you have the fireproof mat down you'll be fine, I've done it in mine and you can even touch the ground below it with your hand. It's not that hot, no cookie sheet needed. The large Woodlander is taller which might be more convenient for cooking and the legs are spring loaded which is nice. Plus it looks super cool. So with whatever you think looks best and you'll be happy!

    I am now just looking for a canvas tent. But i was wondering. I have moticed that some.people put down mats for the stove. Do i need some extra protection on the floor for a cot or cots? Thanks for your time.

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily for cots if it's got a thick sturdy floor like this one. Unless you lose a cap and the end of the cot leg is sharp or something, then I'd probably just set it on a little chunk of wood or a dinner plate or something laying around. But that's just me!

  • @esterdrass4964
    @esterdrass4964 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I am so torn. Really, the only reason I would choose a classic Jack 140 over the Skyliner is the big price difference. In your experience, is setting it up alone doable? For your wife? Meaning, a single female can set the tent (either one) up alone? Currently I own an Outfitter which is a lot smaller but very easy to put up. I am thinking the major difference is, dragging it from the car to the spot...and hoisting up the poles to rise the tent. Am I missing something? I want to figure this all out before camping season begins.

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, it is easy enough to set up for one person, man or woman. I've done it. My wife has done it. No biggie. It is a lot of weight to drag around, but that's split up among three bags - poles, stakes, tent. If money is a concern, get the CJ140. Great tent! If money isn't a concern, you really want to support American Made, and you like a few bonus features, the Skyliner is great. But either one will do the trick for most families.

    • @esterdrass4964
      @esterdrass4964 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@theoutdoorempire Thanks! Truth is, I really want the biggie USA made and I think I will wait a few months to get that one. It seems the same amount of work for any of the tents...yeah the dragging from car to ground and putting back in car is probably biggest thing. Also more stakes, I actually find that to be the most time consuming and hardest part.

  • @theKid87
    @theKid87 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Doesn't water collect in the bow of the awning and tent body? Even with one side lowered for drainage, there always seems to be a sag right at the tents roof edge

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A very astute observation! Yes, it will definitely collect in the awning if set up like normal. You can rig one corner lower and it helps but isn't perfect. And over time it can stretch the canvas to the point where it's unavoidable. EXCEPT on the Skyliner which has a grommet in the center as well so you can use one pole in the center of the awning, then guy out each corner to stakes in the ground making an "A" shape that sheds water beautifully. On the Classic Jack, I just roll up the awning when it's raining. But they are great when it's sunny and you want a shady spot to sit in your chair or set a cooler.

  • @Oldrush
    @Oldrush 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    There seems to be some nice features the skyline for sure but I mean grommets and tabs aren’t hard to add and it’s a lot more affordable. My wife grew up hunting and camping in old army tents and I’m having a hard time convincing her this is different. We just sold our rooftop tent and I’m looking at the overlandish base camp also for fast deployment. This doesn’t seem to be too bad though. K ramble done.

    Yes the sky liner hot tent package is about 900$ more than buying the other

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Skyliner tent is about $900 more than the Classic Jack 140. But the hot tent costs (stove, mat, flange, etc) is the same if not a little cheaper on the Skyliner because you don't have to buy the silver fire resistant stove jack panel separately like with the CJ. It's included with the Skyliner. The stoves are interchangeable so it just depends on the model you want. The large Nomad I have in the Skyliner in this video is more expensive than the medium Woodlander, but you could switch them out.

    With the cj140 being compatible with storm fly and portico panels. Does that have any new influence on which you like more?
    Is the storm fly even needed?

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. I don't have the storm fly yet, but have thought about it. The portico panels are definitely interesting to some, though I don't think I'd really use them myself. I can see both of those options being attractive for long term camping or glamping situations. And I think Springbar is working on a StormFly for the Skyliner, but not sure. It's hard to go wrong with either and if you like those options then the CJ140 is probably the way to go because you could likely get all those things and the tent for the price of a Skyliner (or less maybe?).

  • @chrisbarclay4257
    @chrisbarclay4257 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    One problem with the Skyliner ..... there is no rain fly. Why a rain fly? It's not just the extra rain protection. Let's consider the UV protection as well as shading the ceiling from the sun's rays keeping you cooler. With a rain fly you are carrying your own shade.
    Springbar..... Why not go all the way....????
