Dear Br Pettit - thankyou for this video, and for sharing with us the historical settings behind Sections 3 and 5! Thankyou so very much for your insights and teachings about Section 4; I love your description of this section as it being pretty much the first church handbook. 😊 More than that, however, I love how you broke the revelation down and showed us how to relate it to our own callings, whatever they might be. Thankyou once again; you're an absolute legend! 😊🇦🇺
Wow, what a fabulous background of insights! God bless you brother for all your time & charity! If this is how the rest of D & C studies go, I awesomely look forward to learning so much (& I'm already an experienced student)! Praise God!
Nursery leader is one of the most important callings in the church. The leader is the child's first teacher at church, you set the mood if the child loves to come to church. You get to share simple truths of the gospel and share your love easily. Some Sundays are exhausting and some are exhilarating. My favorite calling.
Thank you so much for your time and insights! I am laying in ICU for my second week with Covid-19 pneumonia. It’s hard for me to read with everything hooked up and I am sick of TV. I really enjoy your presentation and knowledge. I am going back and listening to all of your videos. Your a huge blessing to me right now! Thank you!!!
Sad to read of your battle with covid, vinylsp. I hope and pray you'll recover well and soon. Like you, I really love and appreciate Br Pettit's videos and I'm looking forward to watching them for the rest of the year as I study the Doctrine and Covenants. Best wishes to you from Sth Australia. ❤🇦🇺
Thank you. Understanding and knowing the background, history and people are so helpful. Then reading the assigned sections all make sense and increases my knowledge.
I am grateful for your sharing these stories and your opinions. They have given me something to ponder and pray about. Please rembember that "the Atonement" is the Lord's Atonement. It is not an entity all its own. Thank you, again! this has added great depth to my studying. Diane
I so love and enjoy your commentary. It has added to my personal study. I have gained a greater love for these early church members who acted so faithfully. My husband and I look forward to your posts in the coming year. Thank you so much for you study and love of the gospel. You are blessing so many lives.
I never enjoyed Church History classes. They have been rather boring--just the facts, someone sharing a timeline of events. But I love your presentations. There are details I've never heard that bring life and real people to the restoration. I love seeing the complexity of Joseph's situation and relationship with Martin this week. It has made the lessons of Section 3-5 more applicable in my life. For the first time, I'm curious about the events of the Restoration. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and testimony with us.
Love all these details you give about. our Church History and how these revelations came about. So fascinating. Very grateful to you for sharing your knowledge and testimony to this work. God bless.
@@storiesoftherestoration2080 Hi to both Kathy and you. I live in Blacktown, New South Wales, maybe an hour from the iconic Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Great to hear your served in the Melbourne Mission. I have relatives there and back in the day my mother served an a Senior Sister there after dad passed away. Great state. Their temple is moving to Phase 3 on February 1st!! How blessed are they!! Sydney kind of had a second wave of covid so our temple doesn't move to phase 3 yet. So Tom, you have a touch of Aussie in you!!! Thanks so much for these stories. Amazingly awesome!!!!
In a time when we don’t meet together for gospel doctrine class, I am grateful to you for your channel. It helps me feel like I’m in GOspel doctrine class on a Sunday morning.
I love studying Come Follow Me with you. Very helpful! Oh, and this is purely speculative but what if the lost 116 pgs of translation were taken up by Moroni? I recall how Joseph was at Cumorah and when he held the plates then put them down to reach into the stone vault and retrieve something else he looked over and realized the gold plates had been removed from where he had set them down. This was an 'object lesson' to instill in Joseph the need to be ever cognizant and vigilant in his stewardship. It would be entirely possible that Moroni, or another heavenly being, could remove the manuscript and provide another 'object lesson', again stirring Joseph to awareness of the magnitude of his stewardship.
It wouldn't be surprising if Moroni took them, would it? But I think Martin would have had to be less diligent about them before he would take them. Martin did have the Lord's reluctant permission to take them. Or perhaps someone stole them from Martin, and then Moroni took them back. Interesting thoughts.
Thank you so much. Watching from France. I really enjoy all your explanations. I think that no-one should judge Joseph, Emma, Martin, Oliver and all the others. How would we have behaved if found in their situations? I am grateful not to have been and for their example of faith, courage, sacrifices and for their testimonies. I am also looking forward to your next presentation. God bless you.
I just love your stories. Knowing the background brings the scriptures alive and gives them character. I have a love of history and am so grateful for the time you give in these video's. Thanks you ~hippie chick~
So grateful for the time you put into these videos! They are very helpful to me in visualization of the sections! I have a question- at the time of the loss of the manuscripts, was Emma still pregnant? Or had she already lost their first baby? I feel like that also plays into Joseph’s anguish as well.
Question for Tom: Emma was the first scribe and then Martin Harris . . . After the 116 pages were lost, and after Joseph got the plates, again, but before Oliver Cowdrey, did Emma act as scribe, again? I'm trying to reconcile a story I heard in Saints about Emma needing to reassure Joseph that there was a wall around Jerusalem and something I heard in a Fireside that said, the Book of Moroni was translated before the Book of 1st Nephi (which I hadn't heard before). I think I've heard that the 116 pages were the Book of Lehi/The Larger Plates of which Nephi spoke. But unless the Book of Lehi also mentioned Nephi and his brothers outside the walls of Jerusalem, then it would have been the Book of Nephi that she was transcribing.
They didn't translate the small plates of Nephi until they were done with the rest of the book, so Emma wasn't the scribe then - it was Oliver. So the story you are relating most likely occurred during the earliest part of the translation when Emma was the scribe and they were doing the lost Book of Lehi.
It was to put the seer stone in so the words could be seen easier. Just like it is hard to see your phone in the daylight, you use your hand to cover the sun to see it.

You do such a good job and I appreciate your knowledge. I do have something in hopes to clarify? In this article (see attached) it states that Lucy and Martin never divorced but lived separately until her death a few years later. Also that he moved through different apostate groups before coming back to the church. His second wife sounds like an amazing strong woman and niece of Brigham Young. Caroline Young. The other thing that seems to be a controversy is Luck Smith saying she believes the transcripts were burned, yet the Lord told Joseph that the transcribed papers were in the hands of ruthless men, waiting to damage the church. rsc.byu.edu/regional-studies-latter-day-saint-church-history-ohio-upper-canada/caroline-young-harris-kirtland Thank you again. I have listed to all of your videos and love them and your work so very much.
Hi Tamra. Thanks for your comments. I will have to look into the official status of Martin and Lucy's marriage. I've read that it ended in divorce, but with continued research, perhaps it has been discovered that they were only separated.
