Haven't seen any interviews with Dr. Robert Ballard yet. He is the man to listen to about these things. After he discovered the Titanic in 1985 he always said that it was too dangerous to send a manned submersible down there. Remote vehicles, fine. Not humans. He had a near death experience in Alvin when his 3 man crew went down there in 1986. He would know.

The hull was supposed to be 7" instead of 5. There were flammable materials inside. It was never tested at the proper depth. Viewing port window was only certified to withstand pressure at depth of 1300 m, not 4000. Corners were cut. Another couple signed up for one of these trips back in 2016 aboard another one of his submersibles called the Cyclops. Rush felt that the sub had technical problems and cancelled the expedition, but he wouldn't give the people back their quarter of a million bucks and they are still involved in a legal battle to try to get back the money.

It most likely had a catastrophic hull failure. Everyone would have been killed instantly. At that depth you don't get a leak like on a boat at the surface. Down at the sea bottom the pressure would be about 400 times greater than at the surface. Water coming in at that pressure would would be around 6000 psi. That is two or three times greater than a pressure washer and would cut right through flesh. I hope I am wrong but the sudden loss of communication is worrisome. Even with a loss of power it should be able to drop ballast and return to the surface. If they don't find it at the surface it was probably crushed and is at the bottom.
I was shocked to learn it was made from carbon fiber. Not the material I would trust at that kind of pressure. It seems totally irresponsible to take passengers on such a craft. There should be some kind of regulatory standard.

What was the last message received from the submersible? What is its normal rate of descent? What was the expected time for the sub to descend to the bottom? Apparently from the reporting, it was only about 90 minutes from when they left the surface to when contact was reported lost. Could it have reached the bottom in that time? To get from the surface to 13000’ depth in 90 minutes would require an average of 2.4 ft per second rate of descent.

  • @559ways
    @559ways ปีที่แล้ว +4

I am not being negative here; realistic.
From what has been detailed, the ocean currents at 13,000 feet in depth, are very strong. They are so strong it has pushed and forced a submarine just like this one, in to the propeller of the Titantic where it got stuck temporarily.
From what has been detailed, we learned the ocean visibility at 13,000 feet is O. It's pitch black. The submarine has a special lense that penetrates the dark spectrum of color and produces light however it's wave length is very narrow for visibility.
What that means is, even if they can get a navy submarine down to 13,000 feet within the next 14-20 hours, it is unlikely they will spot the submarine especially if the ocean floor is throwing up particles and debris from the pure mass of pressure down there.
People need to really be sensible about this they pretty much aren’t surviving this they’d be lucky if they find the bodies period & maybe this will probably bring to light some issues with companies doing this sort of thing and treating it like a carnival ride.

It would be a sealed explosion proof light so if it was in an oxygen rich environment it wouldn't cause a fire in the case of an exposed spark at an electrical connection. That submersible was built with every corner cut even down to intentionally not hiring experienced crew because they didn't want to hire "an ex-military 50 something year old white guy." I guess they wanted to save some money by paying less for an experienced 25 year old who could install camper lights and video game controllers rather than the proper purpose built equipment.

I remember seeing this story several months ago, and I thinking to myself, "There's no way in the world that I am paying a quarter of a million to sit criss-cross applesauce for however long it takes to get down there and back up. Much less with some of the items used to control it and from where those items were bought."

quarter of a million is quarter of a million to you. It's 5 bucks to billionaire. Billionaire wants to do more then sit in a sofa every evening. Billionaire is having a life.

I was nonplussed by the reporter's experience with three trips in this sub, where the first two required them to emergency scrub the mission. I can count on one hand the amount of privately owned subs to ferry people deep undersea with, and on zero hands the amount of them Id feel okay going on. Submarines are widely used by nations, backed by decades of practice/research/learning by failure and bankrolled by national budgets because what they do is inherently unsafe and possibly tops on everyones list of "worst ways to die."

I'd be ok on the Deepsea Challenger.
Not sure about worst way to die. An implosion would be extremely quick and relatively painless at that depth. Slowly losing oxygen would suck, but passing out slowly better than burning to death.

Honestly, billionaires complained about pandemic relief that saved children from starving, I don't care that they keep finding stupid ways to die and our taxes pay for the rescues. Let them save themselves since that's their attitude with us.

The arguments of this guy is clear that there's no way to save them if they're still down there!

So brave of the CEO to be the test pilot who dies to prove to the rest of us that it is a bad idea.

They are dead bro. 99% likely to rapid decompression or an implosion. This is now a retrieval misson.
