  • Jinger Duggar was a breakout star on the TLC hit series “19 Kids and Counting,” which chronicled the infamous Duggar family’s strict religious lifestyle and iron-fist Christian values. Since the show, a flood of controversy has surrounded the Duggar family-from the #FreeJinger movement to Josh Duggar, Jinger’s brother, being sentenced to 12 years in prison for child pornography charges. Jinger joins “Tamron Hall” for an exclusive sit-down to talk about life now, the relationship with her parents, and raising children with her husband Jeremy Vuolo.

Of course, she isn't going to hold her parents responsible for being in a cult. This book is the doing of her husband and the co-author (who is a high up member of her new fundie cult church). It doesn't take a rocket scientist to look at this book and know is a bunch of nonsense. If you look at some of her quotes from the book, she is still brainwashed by a lot of the same stuff. I really do hope that she wakes up one day and can truly escape this life.

Wearing dresses, no TV and being in a loving family....where is the abuse??? There are kids that have truly been abused.....there are many kids that have parents that are drug users, physically abusive, mentally abusive...these things will bring fear. Many things in the Bible will bring fear....hell which is real, will bring fear...I feel great sadness for 2 parents who truly loved their children. Ginger had a life of travel, love, a beautiful home. We all saw the show....I didn't see abuse. Perhaps the churchs teachings are strict, but I believe they were not devastating as presented.... Honor your father and mother??? Where did I hear that? How can you be a Christian and break this commandment? I have been in both worlds, Christian conservative and the partying secular lifestyle and I say..give me Jesus 🙏 will people sell out their own parents for fame and fortune?? . as far as Goddard, was he convicted ? Perhaps he is a false prophet, but all believers have a Bible , prayer..family ..other believers. I know no family is perfect, but on the show, were all those smiles, weddings, missionary trips, family dinners, outings etc...fake? I grew up in a large family, and with the busy schedules etc, shopping for jeans or hanging out with the neighborhood rowdies didn't leave me with a fear of the world???

TLC paid for those vacations and the completion and decorating of that home. Smiles? Sure...they knew the consequences (from Jim Bob) if they didn't. Lastly, I'm confused by your last sentence that you used to shop for jeans and hang out with neighborhood kids...the Duggar kids were NOT allowed to do those things. Sorry, that's a cult and I'm so happy Jeremy got her away from that. It was a seminar. People take things and use them in a wrong way and the results may feel like a cult but that’s their particular experience and has to involve another leader who twists the original teachings.
This has also happened to me when a man used the teachings of Calvinism and RJ Rushdoony in a very cultic way. I worked for this man and had to leave after a month.
The other charge is that Bill Gothard was a false teacher but this also has been unproven.
      So what do he teach?
He distilled his message to 7 Life Principles. This is no different than what a Pastor often does on Sunday in a 3- point sermon.
So here they are: you be the judge. billgothard.com/what-bill-gothard-really-teaches-in-the-basic-seminar/

I also know a family who's son left IBLP is still a Christian and when his son was born disabled it was blamed on him leaving by the IBLP community. Those in the community used it as an example to me as why I should follow Gothards teaching. How terrible.

@@barbourjohn just need to point out that just because you have been in one cult, it doesn’t mean you’re immune to being caught up in one again. Believing you’ll be able to identify a cult very easily now- actually sets you up for the opposite. Because you believe you’re not susceptible. Recognizing how dangerous cults are includes how they use psychological + community manipulation. Which is something that everyone is susceptible to at some extent.
And even if you don’t personally believe Bill Gothard’s “teachings” cultivated an environment for cult-like communities/beliefs; the Duggar family themselves are a cult. Discrediting Jinger’s experience because you don’t think she has the right perspective about Bill Gothard’s preaching is how victims within cults + extremely religious communities are made. It blames the victim and does nothing to address the actual abuse occurring. Gothard’s “teachings” were also being spewed by the Duggar parents- so even if he didn’t make a cult himself, the fact that his beliefs were adapted by a cult so easily is a red flag.

My mother took me to Bill Gothard's seminars when I was in middle school, because she totally bought into it. I can attest to the fear based and non-questioning way that faith was taught and presented. I would go to bed every night and makes sure I repented of every "sin" I had committed that day and lay awake sometimes hoping I didn't forget anything because if Jesus came while I was sleeping and I hadn't confessed everything or lived a virtuous enough life I was going to go to hell. I was 13! I hadn't lived long enough to really know what sin was, for crying out loud. Another thing that Bill Gothard was big on were catch phrases and one that my mom repeated frequently was "God said it, I believe it, that settles it". This goes towards the not questioning anything because the "God said it" part was actually Bill's convoluted interpretation of what God said. I was never encouraged to read and understand the bible on my own, but to let the "experts" tell me what to think. Luckily I always did have a mind of my own and I sought my own interpretations and focused on what Jesus said and found grace and mercy and love there that I had never know as a child. It opened up a whole new dimension of life and faith in Jesus and and understanding of God outside the box of Christianity. As a side note, I never knew the Duggars were followers of Gothard while their show was on air, but every time I watched it, I would get a creepy feeling that I couldn't put my finger on, especially when I heard some of the faith principles they described, I now know why it gave me chills. Not just because of Gothard, obviously there was so much more going on, but his teachings were at the heart of their beliefs. Through fear, shame, and guilt is no way to live life and raise children

That desperation to confess sounds a tiny bit like Roman Catholicism and the reason why so many Catholics end up reaching for the bottle or needle. Evidence of a cult are secretive rituals that are probably against the law, and the leader not permitting anyone to leave that belief system. Kudos to Jinger for telling her story. She looks so happy and beautiful, now that she is married to a man that loves her and has helped her adjust. She is one of the lucky ones who was able to break free from a religious family and find her way in life. The sad truth is there are many others like Jinger and her siblings that are in these situations and want to have their own lives and their own beliefs, but are fearful of judgment and cutting off family ties, so they stay, and many end up suffering from depression and suicide. It's sad when people take religion, twist it to mold their own beliefs, and then drag fear and politics into it. And people wonder why the younger generation is turning away from religion. I watched the show and I myself was not happy with how the sisters were treated as they grew older and started dating. I remember recently her cousin Amy recounted that she brought DVDs of the VeggieTales cartoons for the kids because the cartoons taught Christian values, but the Duggar parents forbade the kids to watch them because it would give them the impression that veggies could talk. I imagine they would have forbade the kids to watch Davey and Goliath, which was a beloved cartoon from the 60s that taught Christian values and was created by Gumby creator Art Clokey, as un-Christian, or not aligned with their teachings. I remember Davey and Goliath growing up in the 70s when they reran them on Sunday mornings and loved the characters. I noticed Jinger still has her faith, but she realizes that LOVE and not fear are the heart of being a Christian.

My hearts break for all of them, yes I watched the show and I love all of the kids but I also knew the parents were brainwashed and they were brainwashing the kids. Yes what josh did was horrible and no brother should ever touch their sisters. But they didn’t learn about sex until they got married, they couldn’t have their privacy when they went on dates. Kids start learning about sex in 6 or seventh grade. They were raising their brothers and sisters, they parents still were having children, I am sorry but they were robbed of their childhood and teenage years. I’m happy for her

No, there is ZERO reason to defend Josh... he's evil and vile! The child P**n they found on HIS computer was not only the youngest victims that police have ever seen, but also some of the more violent material they've ever seen. He's a predator and likely has been such since he got caught at 14....remember that's just when he was caught....it happened many times! Don't ever defend evil like that. I was a victim of sexu@l a$$ult starting at 4....it still haunts me, and I'm 33 now. So please don't defend that evil being.

I'm not bashing Jinger in anyway, but calling someone who has lived a really privileged life, with a family that loves her, isn't a survivor. The Josh situation happens across the board in many, many families. She was never in danger. Her parents did what they thought was right. She wasn't tortured, starved, beaten, or even verbally assaulted. I find it ridiculous.
I agree with her saying that it was a cult culture type situation, and that those teachings aren't right. But not getting to date, or wear pants isn't something you need to survive... Some real serious crap is going on in the world, and in the grand scheme of things, those Dugger kids are well educated, and have all gone on to be decently successful in life outside of Josh. Most families of only 3 kids have at least 1 bad egg. There are 3 kids in my family, and I'm the only one who isn't a drug addict. I was raised in a decent home, we got to wear what we wanted, etc... So for everyone to act like this is such a scandal is laughable. Let's not forget that her parents raised her to be able to see the truth, and to be strong enough to move on.
