At this point I don't even understand the point of having a family doctor. Booking an appointment to my family doctor takes 3-6 weeks. What sort of illness can you preemptively book 3-6 weeks in advance or wait 3-6 weeks before receiving treatment? It's such a worthless system.

So true....my mother's friend went to her doctor because she'd fallen and needed 2 little stitches. Her family doctor saw her and sent her to ER, where she had to wait 8 hours to get the stitches.
So OHIP got billed twice--once for the family doctor and for the doctor in ER. I don't understand why the family doctor couldn't do anything other than a referral to ER. Might as well close up family medical offices and have those doctors work in hospitals.

I don't consider our health care is free. We've been paying it through our tax dollars, plus on top of that, we're also paying $800 health premium when filing your tax, regardless you use the service.
Why should doctors receive a lump sum from the government for each of their patient even they don't see them? I would suggest that the government should reimburse the patient after each visit, and the doctor could only receive payment directly from their patients after each service/treatment. Therefore, no service, no pay. This way, patients could have choice to see any doctor they want. It's like the system in France. Patients pay the doctor, and the patients will get reimbursed directly from the government.

    • @donnahenrikson1320
      @donnahenrikson1320 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

By paying a lump sum, it allows for longer appointments to manage more than one issue, prescription refills without an appointment and so on - in short, caring for patients in a flexible way. Some family docs are completely fee-for-service, but will - by necessity - have to limit the number of problems/visit to one or two, and have patients book appointments for everything. Remember that, apart from a small number of salaried physicians, doctors have to pay rent, staff, supplies, utilities, etc, as well as fund their own retirement (they have no paid benefits of any kind). The fees paid them by OHIP have gone up by about 9 % in the last 10 years while costs have increased approximately 20-25%.

The government needs to end the practice of paying doctors whether or not they need care every year. It just means that healthier patients get a family doctor, and the ones that need a family doctor the most get dropped or screened out.
The government also should not allow newcomers to get a family doctor when citizens do not have one. Once every citizen is enrolled with a family doctor, THEN newcomers on a list can be considered. Crazy to pay taxes for decades and be without a family doctor.

No , it is not free . Nothing is free . But they don't teach you that in the school . Taxpayers pay for everything including healthcare .

Some guy in TX named a sloppy heart attack prompted maple donut with bacon as “ Canadian health care”. Well, can’t argue with that now.

I’m in BC Canada. I’ve had to go to a walk in (I have respiratory issues.) even though I have a family doctor. Often it is a two week wait…by then whatever you have, will have become worse or way worse. I try to see my doctor when I can, but the reason why I would want a family doctor even if I have to suddenly go to a walk-in is because I can say…”Yes…I have a family doctor.” and it kind of puts the walk-in doctor on notice that there is someone monitoring my health. My brother-in-law has no family doctor, wound up in emergency and the doctor assigned played some games with the discharge papers, not really telling my BIL much and wanting to hand them over to the family doctor which he does not have… My doctor offered to see my BIL in May ‘24, to become his doctor…but my BIL has not made the effort (Too far apparently…but my doctor will do phone and online visits also.).

Do any of you realize how many services you are not allowed if you don't have a family doctor? Mental Health referrals for one. Try to get referred for those if you don't have a family doctor. It's not happening. I know this from personal experience.

I've never bothered trying to get one, and I haven't been to the ER in probably 8 years or so. An ounce of prevention might be worth a pound of cure, but if a 30 year old drops dead uou can

Hi from Sydney Australia. This is outrageous and thoroughly disgusting. It’s heartless. Did that doctor enter the Profession to take care of patients? Or to take care of that doctor’s bottom line?…… ⚛️☮️🌏

You need to get into a practice that has 3 or 4+ doctors. That way they can make sure you can see one of the doctors quickly .. in my case within 24-48 hrs. They'll also often be linked to an after hours set up perhaps with another practice. Using any of these linked doctors avoids the billing problem. Some support phone appts.
Problems only occur if you're too far away or unable to get to their location. Legit places usually will give u a break if its just a one-off and you explain to them via phone beforehand.
Unfortunately not all practices are that ethical .. and you run into trouble when you move & have to find a decent new practice.

Do no harm; doctors seem to forget this and if something goes wrong the hospital lawyers and CMPA make sure that you really couldn't afford to sue nor will they admit their mistakes.

That is completely stupid and disrespectful to the family and why is that have that stupid and insensitive actions of an entity and a doctor and a government completely ignorant. That healthcare that the government shut it on. Over the years and never fix or do they really really don’t care about Canadians or the government is really messed up .
