MASSIVE - A Utah Mountain Goat Hunt At 13,000 ft

  • After waiting 17 years and climbing to 13,000 feet, Trail was finally able to hunt for a mountain goat in his home state of Utah with a once in a lifetime tag in his pocket. A good hunt calls for a good hunting partner, watch Trail and Bransen navigate the massive terrain that these mountain goats call home.

Great Hunt! Congratulations! I just started the Colorado process for points 3 years ago and so next year I will finally be eligible for the draw, I have 3 points in Wyoming, and on year 19 for New Mexico bighorn. So I know the wait and anticipation Trial had. Glad he got it done!

Congratulations Trial and Bransen on one sweet hunt. I always like the GoHunt films. What an absolute adventure. I have the upmost respect for those that have the patience to wait that long and are able to go after an animal in such remote country. Coming from West Virginia there isn't much public land back here in the East. I also have respect for people who go after animals with archery equipment, especially the hunters that go after sheep and goat with a bow, even high country mule deer. I would definitely only rifle hunt those Rocky Mountain sheep or goat species and I found out at the end why Bransen had a rifle. (What were the odds that he had a tag too, he was just packing it just in case). I would bow hunt/spot and stalk pronghorn which has its own challenges, but I don't have to worry about being cliffed out trying to get around one. I did just buy bonus points in Nevada for both California Bighorn Sheep and Desert Bighorn Sheep (So 20 years from now when I am 57 I might draw a tag haha) along with elk, mule deer and pronghorn (horn longer than ears). My goal is to hunt pronghorn in every state that I can without having to hire an outfitter if I can, mule deer as well. Not worried about trophy size (an average representative of the species) just looking for adventure, stories to tell, and sweet meat.
Don't worry about the fact that you got a nanny instead of a billy, aside from being close and seeing genitals from behind I don't think I could really tell myself let alone at 300+ yards. Thanks for sharing, Trial got his long awaited mountain goat and an Alaskan moose this past fall, what a banner season. Congrats once again.

Thanks for the hunt! It gets a little tricky when you are maneuvering in boulders that are bigger than houses and looking into crevasses that they would never find you if you slipped in to one. I harvest my billy just West of Marsh peak. Will never forget the experience. I have been in on several goat hunts now as I help my friends harvest their trophies and each time it brings me back to how majestic and rough the country is that these animals live in. Great hunt and thanks for sharing!

I can absolutely tell the difference in a nanny and billy! I applied for a nanny tag, thinking most people wouldn't know the difference...then I drew it...and I had to figure out which animal I could legally harvest, it made for tough hunting for sure! I could have taken a great billy on day 1, and many other goats for the next week, but it took me 7 days to figure out in the field and a few days watching ID videos in-between my hunt days to be certain. There's a lot of pressure when you draw a likely once in a lifetime tag not to screw it up! And I also said I didn't know if I'd do another goat hunt right after the harvest, but a day later, I knew I'd apply again! Hopefully I'll draw again in my lifetime, it only took me 13 points last time! Keep those videos coming guys!

It CAN happen twice. I drew a Montana tag 5 years ago, and drew Wyoming Unit 2 this year. Hope you joined up with Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance to support the population and future opportunities for yourselves and others. My first hunt was with a very experienced guide and his son. They both thought were were on a billy, after the kill and getting up to the animal, it turned out to be an old nanny, just like yours. At least you saved the guide fee ;).Still makes a beautiful mount, a unique memory, and personally I found the meat tasty as well.

PS, great video, although I think you made light of the 13 mile pack in. You definitely captured a bit of the excitement of climbing those bolder slopes. It is amazing how smooth and nice those mountains can look from a distance, then up close they turn into hell. And you sit there on the top, thinking, "Why hasn't all this loose crap rolled or slide down years ago?" Congrats on a beautiful goat!

  • @chavenord

One problem with once in a lifetime tags is you just don't get the experience which is needed to hunt the goats properly. There are many telltale signs of a Billy but the only truly consistent way to identify one is by the width of the base of the horns and the space between them. It takes a lot of looking and hunts to be able to do this with accuracy. Great hunt and great Nanny. Nannies are also entered into Boone and Crockett.
