Kudos on the lesson, obviously… but my favorite part is your Jimmy Herring shirt. I got high with Jimmy outside the Chicago House of Blues when he was doing that “Jazz Is Dead” thing with Billy Cobham, and have been a huge Jimmy fan ever since.
@CharlieLongGuitar I've never played one. How does it compare to a good strat? I have the 1961 American vintage ii. After my niece put a tiny ding on the back, I was kinda relieved. I don't have to be super careful now. I would be extra careful if I had a PRS.
Thanks. Is the order of learning: get familiar and proficient in all these elements (pentatonic, triads, major scales, etc) first and then apply this great creative, structured exercise?
@@jackschijven8219 actually part of the message here is you don’t have to be overly proficient with the elements…you can make a lot of music with a few triad shapes and a couple of the pentatonic patterns. I’m encouraging people to start being creative sooner and being a little less worried about “proficiency” - that will come with time.
This is awesome!!! Im just starting to get out of the major caged boxes and linking the fretboard together to get that illusive fretboard freedom.. main goal to overall get better to make sokos for songs ive written.. this is gold! Thank you Charlie!!! Once again an informative great lesson in an easy to understand way!!! Oh and I've been learning little wing so onto your next vid too!!! Magic!!! Thanks again!!! Bkess 🙏🕊️✨🎸🌋
I love, nay NEED! to run my nightly scales with an old school Wittner metronome takes about 1-1/2 hours to complete Afterwards it’s running jam tracks as playlists without knowing the key or progression and improvising unless I have studio duties or learning Covers for bands that I’m working with for paying shows Pretty much my life right now ✌🏻
I got to 1:28. I’m a good guitarist. I always want to get better. But when it comes to literally any theory it’s like I’m musically dyslexic. I’ve played for 20 years, I cannot focus on what people are telling me when it comes to this stuff. Am I the only one?
@@TexasBlues-123 I love being able to play fast…but any more I use it for effect here and there…and even then I try to play fast MELODIES… thanks for taking time to comment!
Play Blue Bossa play Satin Doll play Autumn Leaves. Now try to play a decent solo that fit with melody and chord changes and stay within the form. Now go back to rock tunes and hear how much better you sound. 🎸😎
Jimmy Herring was my grandmother’s (yes grandmother’s) name. Took it as a sign I needed to be here.
Well done , simple and nicely explained with didactic. Thanks for sharing!

Same for me! Not the getting high part, but I saw Jimmy with Jazz is Dead and have been a fan of his since!
I love the idea of making a simple plan and sticking to it

Years ago, I was trying to build speed. After 12 months all I could play was scales. I struggled to do a simple blues solo.
@@TexasBlues-123 that’s the trap we fall into right?? 🎸🎶🔥🎶🎸
@@CharlieLongGuitar Being able to play fast is great but the best response I've had from an audience was from slow solos that said something.

@@CharlieLongGuitar I meant you did a great job of showing me how to implement the things I practice. Thanks.
Tone is as important as technique.
I mean to a point, maybe, but what good is tone if you only know how to play at a beginner level?
Nah
Sound doesn’t match.
