Jeep WJ: Rear Brake Hose / Brake Cable / Wheel Spacers

  • As we continue assembling the Jeep we discover that the rear brake hose needs to be replaced with something longer and more suitable for the job. In this video we take care of that with a brake hose I got at Napa and also repair the damaged emergency brake cable. Oh and we check out the Iron Rock Of Road 1.5" wheel spacers that will allow me to run the stock wheels with this lift kit. -Enjoy!

Rick...You really hit on something with your videos. Nobody ever really gets to see what it takes to repair various types of problems. Viewers share a common appreciation for watching you work and the educational dialogue that accompanies the repair. Your camera work is excellent. The level of detail is clear. Including your family is a plus. I just wanted to offer some positive feedback from a fan.

At 8:15 Eric says "People are going to quit watching..." Nope. This is the essence of why I watch. You are so willing to show the everyday struggles with inanimate objects. You do 1,000 brakes a year, and yet you still struggle. That is the nature of human-machine interactions. So great of you to post these.

Love not working on brake lines that are not all rusted to hell. Little tid bit. To stop brake fluid from leaking out while working on them. Have the brake pedal held down slightly with a brake pedal depressor or a pry bar. It will close the ports in the master cylinder stopping fluid flowing through. I have been doing it for years and works great.

They make hub rings for wheels that are have a different size hub. I worked in a wheel shop in my younger days and most if not all aftermarket wheel makers make the hub oversized (except custom drilled wheels) so they fit a variety of vehicles with the proper sized hub rings installed to take up any room. We kept a ton of different sized rings and they can be had in plastic or aluminum.

This is why I like watching channels like this. They show you stuff that shows like motor trend and others dont show. Like bending the brake line and other stuff you have to do to make it work. I may have done things differently, but it got done and works..that's all that really matters at the end of the day. (Not everyone is OCD like me..lol)

I can't begin to express how relieved I was when you struggled a bit with the actuator. While I'm only a shade tree mech, I'd like to think I'm decent but those brakes kicked my a$$. First video of yours I watched and appreciated it. I also work on vehicles with my daughter Samantha - wouldn't trade it for the world.

My 1997 S-10 is just as clean as this. They salted our roads twice last year. And 4 times the year before but a quick trip with the underwash at carwash and all is good. My 2003 odyssey looks brand new underneath. Down in the mountains of Virginia they use a lot of grit and a lot less salt. The grit really helps traction when it's too cold for the salt to work well and it doesn't destroy the cars. You deserved a break from the car cancer you fight everyday.

I struggle to comment on a specific part of a video sometimes but for this one I'll say the adjustment of the rubber mounts for the brake line was a great tip. Like you, I like things tidy. I get a kick from your comment about the ease of working on Southern vehicles. We are spoiled to a degree.

Tired of the rust huh? Well, you could move out here to Washington State. No rust except in the areas of the salt water. Especially on the vehicles of the folks in the shellfish & fishing industries, if you'd get homesick for it. LOL. Great video & I love your innovative solutions. I had to do that sort of thing in electronics repair, where parts were often NLA, The auto parts stores were a favorite of mine for odds & ends to fix the sets.

Another great video! I definitely love being in the south as compared to where I grew up (MA) when it comes to the lack of rust! Anyway - to your comment on aftermarket wheels not being hubcentric - many aftermarket wheels size the center large, then you buy adapter rings (sleeves) that take up the gap - those are available with an ID equal to whatever hub size you are looking for, and an OD sized to the wheel.

I agree that its always more difficult working on our own stuff than other peoples stuff.I grew up on the farm in minnesota and rust was everywhere. our vehicles just fell apart from rust. the saying "rusted to the door handles" happened. I have lived near Denver since 1980 and do NOT miss rust at all. my silverado has the same kind of rear parking brakes. crappy system with the brake fully applies it slips to easy. been like that since new its a design problem not a maintenance problem. when we had rear drum brakes we had better parking brake action.

Very nice work and thanks so much for allowing us to follow along with your thought process. I had to change all my brake lines in my '99 Le Sabre. The toughest was the little pigtails coming out of the rear break cylinders. Luckily, Advance Auto was cutting break lines to custom sizes back then. All I did was use a socket remembering to pull as I formed the brake line to keep it from kinking. Thanks again for sharing and also we all make mistakes. I can get down on myself to when I screw up, but its just part of learning especially when taking on a complex job such as this.

WJ Selection - hey Eric, you mentioned in the first video of this project why you wanted particular years/options for a Grand Cherokee. Although I know generally what different models of Jeeps there are (very, very generally), I don't know specifics. I'd love to hear a more detailed explanation of models/years/options - including engine choices, tranny choices, and other running gear choices that might be out there and why some may be better than others? I don't know if others would be interested or not - it may be just a select few. But hey, if you felt like just discussing that at the start of the next installment, maybe people not interested could skip over it? Thanks!

Tracy Diller, In a way, I can't believe it either but it is just a weekend 'hobby' vehicle. If, on the other hand, Eric traded in his Tundra for a Ram, I would break down and cry ;)

Watch using wheel spacers, I would use Loctite on them then torque them to spec. After using Loctite DO NOT RETORQUE THEM OR YOU'LL BREAK THE LOCTITE LOSE & IT WILL BE LIKE USING NO LOCTITE.
