    I have had several different editions of these books over the years, Currently I have first printings of the Ballantine trilogy (without a box), dated October 1965 (U7040 for The Fellowship of the Ring), November 1965 (U7041 for The Two Towers), & December 1965 (U7042 for The Return of the King), with the Remington covers. The three covers were issued as a large wall poster, blended together, with the bottom caption "Come to Middle Earth" by Ballantine, which also issued annual wall calendars w/ the Tolkien illustrations from the early 1970s on. The "red box" alludes to the Red Book of Westmarch, which supposedly recorded the history of Middle Earth.

    The cover art for the Ballantine set in the early 80's was done by Darrell K. Sweet, who also illustrated the covers for the Shannara Trilogy among others, which is by far the best of all the illustrations Tolkien included. He also influenced and spawned the cover art for the later books and modules for Dungeons and Dragons.

    For me, the 1973 Ballantine versions are where it's at. My copies are in the gold box. I love the contrast of white on black, more minimalist look.

    I have an old green covered copy of The Two Towers.. It's a Del Rey Book published by Ballantine in 1982 with an introduction by Peter S. Beagle written in 1975.. It has seen better days though unfortunately, the only survivor of a house fire sadly.. I plan to buy the boxed set edition of The Hobbit and LOTR illustrated by Alan Lee soon..Happy reading 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

    I have the 1973 and 1981 Ballantines for nostalgia. I read from these as a boy. I ran across the 1965 Ballantines and bought them because I like to collect and read from old mass paperbacks with browned pages.

      Great sets! I like the old sets too - nothing beats that old book smell!

    I've got the Ace set in a storage box in my basement that I bought when they came out and read 10 times over the years so they're pretty banged-up.

    those bootleg covers though, I cant get over Sauron (looking more like a cloaked Morgoth) looming over his tower like its his greatest achievement, nevermind the One Ring! xD
    All good editions no less. My introduction to the series was the 1973 Ballentine trilogy that my uncle handed to me while I was playing J.R.R Tolkiens TLotR on the SNES back in the 90s. I of course lost the books over time (pissing my uncle off) but I'd like to get my hands on them again,... with that box cover too!

    I own the Black Paper Back books that were released in 2004 (I believe), I adore them so much :D!!!!

      Cool! I know of a black box set of black paperbacks, released in the 1990s, for the 50th anniversary. That set was printed into the early 2000s, I think. If that's the set you have, I'm familiar with it! It's great!! Thanks for checking out our video!!

    I have the 1973 Ballentine editions but with no box. I purchased them from Walden Books. ( I think?).They have been read many, many times. I've had to tape the spines to keep the covers from falling off. I have one Barbara Remington edition; bought at a used book store.

    Someone on Amazon has (apparently) a brand new set still shrink wrapped that they want.... $990 for... if one were interested; a wee bit out of my price range...

    Hi, I noticed that you didn't have the green box for the first printings. I randomly got a set of these at auction, first edition first printing with the green box. I've researched for over an hour and can't find any first edition, first printings with the green box. I have found some first printing paperback sets for about 300-600 dollars (but even then they aren't totally verified or have one book that is second printing). My question: What do you think I should do with them?

    • @thepeppysquid5177
      @thepeppysquid5177  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd hold on to that set, if I were you. They are getting so hard to find lately. What an awesome find for you! A highly desirable set, for sure.

    Awesome video! I have a set of the LOTR Ballantine “special book club edition” but can’t find any info on them. Think you could help me out?

    • @thepeppysquid5177
      @thepeppysquid5177  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen a few different "special book club editions": A purple box with 4 books, no UPC on the box. Those were printed in the 1980s / 1990s I believe. The books inside state Special Book Club Edition on the book covers. I've seen the same set in the same box without that designation as well. I think they were all book club editions though. I've also seen the books in the gold box (late 70s) with a book club designation on the cover. I have not seen a lot of those. Most of the gold box sets were retail, originally sold shrink-wrapped. I love the older sets, book club or not, I think they're a great addition to any bookshelf!
