I've never heard of an illegal battery...
A good battery has a BMS controller that monitors the charge of the individual cells and all has thermal and over current protection. What I suspect is that some of the people assembling the packs are cutting corners and disabling the BMS or not including it because without it you can get a higher peak speed and a longer range.
As you can imagine, that goes badly once the batteries age a bit.
They are illegally trafficked from China.

Salt and battery is a common crime .
Politicians promoted ebikes but never put any regulations until it's too late.
Think about how much prevention they will put in place for Electric Cars. Kinda scary.
I have battery operated power tools and there are numerous outlets for less expensive batteries. I stick to original manufacture batteries. Yes, I will pay $ more, but less chance of them becoming lithium flambe.
This is not the design of the bikes fault. There was a shop owner purchasing knock off products off the dark web. There are regulations. so much so, that little battery dude is now going to jail with assets frozen
Tofu Dreg batteries from China 🤣🤣🤣
need more regulations
Imagine if they went after criminals like this
As someone who uses lithium batteries for alot of projects I think the problem is that regulation targets the wrong parts of the industry. It used to be fairly easy to locate and purchase cells however these incidents have driven up costs and reduced availability. The issue with these fires is not the technology Lithium batteries are perfectly safe when manufactured to the right standards. The issue arises with cheap packs from online market places that contain shoddy work or bad cells. Honestly one of the biggest scams is old cells and factory defects get sent to overseas recyclers who instead of recycling them will re wrap them and resell them on online markets like Ebay Ali or Amazon. You dont want to ban or restrict sale of cells but rather keep the counterfeit and defects out of the supply chain so people can confidently purchase cells that they know will work.
the fix is making sure the batteries sent out. cannot be easily just put directly on sale
The policies I've seen basically only allow UL listed batteries / bikes - seems like the way to go.
Yeah, like in the middle of the ocean on a container ship, or in the skies on a passenger airplane.
I have cells in perfect working order in my bike that are over 20 years old . The problem lies mostly in how they are maintained and handled . And most people you sell to you explain how to properly care for the battery and it goes in one ear and out the other then after explaining everything you give them a book how to treat and care for their battery and they take it home and throw it away without even looking at it .
This store owner had no intention of complying with safety regulations. Fine, jail and deport.

Criminals commit crimes.
Do the batteries catch fire when they are being charged or discharged or just sitting around. Why are they bursting into Flame? Anybody know
Uncertified batteries can start burning at any time, for any reason. Remember these batteries are also in Every cell phone, laptop, tablet, Bluetooth devices, power tools and yard tools, many of which have had recalls due to possible battery fires. It is the cheap crap batteries that catch fire.
Grin Technologies has a YT video on the main causes and their likelihood of lithium-ion pack fires.
The main cause is badly designed, manufactured or damaged cells. After that, bad pack design or manufacture that can lead to cell damage such as lack of proper battery management system, shorts, imbalance, overcharging etc., then abuse such as physical impact, water intrusion, overcharging (too high voltage, too high current), use or storage temperature.
Getting a UL certified pack does greatly decrease the odds of having insufficient cell protection, and ultimately odds of a fire. It is a good way to screen out poorly designed or constructed packs.
I don’t know if NYC has a minimum IP (ingress protection) rating, but the higher you go, the better protected a pack is from dust and water. Wikipedia has an article with a chart summarizing the success criteria for each rating. Most packs I’ve seen with an IP rating are rated IP65, sealed against dust and will keep out water from low-pressure jets (4.4psi from a distance of 3 meters), so good for using during rainy weather, though I’d wipe them off as soon as possible.

Adam dam time !
They need to provide the proper extension cords for these bikes. People are using cheap cords that can’t handle the amperage.
Actually the batteries and the chargers are also substandard
The chargers are low amperage slow chargers that don't require any heavy duty cord. You don't know much about ebikes.
Can be that, though it’s more likely they are simultaneously charging multiple packs on the same circuit/cord/power strip, over-charging or having too many close together.
@@ooigfgnnkhjjnc these aren't the high quality chargers you're probably familiar with. I used two no brand ebikes. The charger plug wire was so thin that the charger overheated and began smoking. The batteries also bloated. Its dismaying how expensive the batteries are plus the danger of burning the neighborhood. I bought a Honda beat gas scooter and happier now

I myself have been doing e bikes and batteries for 15 years no problems no failures and most of my batteries i have built are still on the road today after over 10 years of daily use .

I took my PHONE BATTERY out to do a REAL FACTORY RESET and it CAUGHT FIRE THEN SMOKED ALOT
You keep hearing about Politician promoting EV uses, but they never think to regulate these items. I'd taken my battery to be repaired with some new cells. The store owner told me to come back in three years when he was certified to repair one. He was taking no chances in having one of those things explode.
Lithium battery packs are the most expensive part of an eBike. Logical that businesses look there to save the most and are tempted to source from cheap dubious suppliers. It's a fools game to do that not just because of the fire hazard. Usually the advertised capacity of these batteries is way above what they really have.
wait till they put these batteries in cars
There in car's all EV car's battery operated
Many owners of e bikes are not performing any preventative maintenance! This would lower the incident rates, but most just ride and charge bikes! Never doing any visual inspection, electrical power connections, or evening monitoring charging operations!
It's not lack of maintenance by the owner.
The problem is that the battery itself lacks the safety and overcharged features, or use substandard.
And the batteries inside these bike shops are catching on fire when they're being charged, they're not typically on the bike when that happens.
Not only that but he put too much starch in shirts.
This could be a good learning tool for citizens. If you're going to buy an E bike then you should research what to look for on the battery so you can learn to distinguish between good and bad batteries before you get the bike so you can make sure the one you buy doesn't have the bad battery.

Wouldn’t the owner or tenant have insurance ? To prove accountability and responsibility
They arrested him after notifying him 4 times! That's too lenient. It's too bad the Police & Fire have to "tip toe" on these matters instead of dealing with them straight up and being stern.
Used lithium-ion batteries taken from EVs which have been totaled by insurance companies should never be installed in another EV, but that is the primary means of used EV battery resellers to acquire their stock. The reason for insurance companies to total an EV is that the battery was damaged in the accident, it posed an increased risk of spontaneous combustion, and the cost of replacement was more than the residual value of the vehicle.
As EVs age and owners are faced with having to pay more for a new battery pack than the vehicle is worth, we will see many more such fires as damaged lithium-ion batteries are used as replacements to extend the life of EVs which have reached end of their service life.
