NBA Hasn’t Seen A Player Like Sasha Vezenkov

แชร์

  • Sasha Vezenkov is unlike any other NBA player: he is able to score while barely dribbling. So far, the 28-year-old Sacramento Kings’ rookie & EuroLeague MVP has racked up 33 points with 2 dribbles. In this video, BasketNews’ Augustas Suliauskas takes a look at how a below average athlete (by NBA standards) can be successful in the strongest basketball league.

      There is a guy who plays like him at a very high level. Lauri Markkanen lead the league in points per touch last year (at almost .500) and was super effective in almost every single playtype and location. One of the best cutters in the NBA and the first player ever to produce 200 3 pointers and 100 dunks in the same season. This season he averages 0.73 dribbles per touch to Vezenkovs 0.31. Most of his damage is done by him being active off the ball and having a very fast trigger and accurate shot from the perimeter.

    As a kings fan I've been paying close attention and hoping for the best from him. He had a rough couple of shooting nights along with most of our other guys in Fox's absence. But I have loved his movement and if he gets that touch back in rhythm he can be a great piece.

    • @TMPOUZI
      @TMPOUZI 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

      He plays small minutes and with the 2nd unit, where passing the ball is not a priority for these players. Only Monk passes the ball, but he too wants to score more in order to be a starter. Vezenkov needs team play, team movement and teamates who can pass the ball to him when he cuts. Only Sabonis and Fox can do that, but Brown never uses him with those two. So I guess he won't make an impact to the Kings, who are a mediocre team anyway

      @@TMPOUZI I'm not sure Monk cares about being in the starting lineup. I've never once heard him complain about his role and he fits into that 6th man role very well. He has more of an opportunity to score and facilitate on the 2nd unit. I do agree that Sasha will succeed more by playing with more players that like to pass the ball such as Sabonis but I also believe that Monk to Sasha could be a good combination in the future. The Kings just need some time to gell together. They have some new pieces to the puzzle and need to make the pieces fit.

    I have a feeling Sasha will return to Europe many years from now with a ring (not necessarilly won in Sacramento). He is the type of player that performs better in the playoffs and he is way more experienced in title deciding matches than his current teammates. Bro getting a ring as a role player is more a matter of luck, so you have no clue if he ever gets one or not. For those saying title is clickbait or Klay Thompson plays exactly the same, here's my explanation behind the title idea: Klay does most of his damage running from off-ball actions set up specifically for him. Staggers, pindowns, all that stuff. Sasha, as we see in the video, does most of the stuff without sets: backdoors, slip screens, just moving without the basketball & keeping the spacing perfect. That's why I think the NBA has never seen a player like him.

    Im from Bulgaria too like him and from his own word like my own mind the NBA in America is the highest LEVEL , Basketball in Europe is not on that high level and to be a part of any NBA Team you should be for real great player , and also 90% of nba players from Europe their dream is NBA Draft... Europe is popular in football/soccer but America is the home of Basketball , he said that it will be hard to be a part of team and also with player/stars on that high level but he wont give up.
    Sorry for bad english

      BS Vezenkov is destroying them in his first season . If he actually play full games he will average 30 points at least . NBa is a clown circus without defence to gain more audience.

    Many wing players should have similar off-ball movement at the corners instead of being stuck in one corner at the 3-pt line all the time. Just look at Aaron Gordon's recent success. Whether they cut in for a layup, cut in for a post up with a mismatch, cut all the away across the baseline for a better 3 point attempt, the defense won't enjoy having to deal with all of that. Shouldn't require a passer of Jokic's caliber to accomplish too.

    I only watched the 2 games he played against my Warriors and what I saw was a crafty player. He's willing to muck it up in paint. The movement he brings in half court offense creates opportunities either on the initial action or for the hockey assist if his teammate stay locked on him. The more he gels with this team, the more he's going to tilt games.
    My only gripe with this video is the thumbnail, and lead text - prime Klay Thompson has been that guy. 60 points on 11 dribbles in 2015 and 43 points on 4 dribbles just last year.

    I hope he becomes even more solid. I hope this does not turn out to be like Barcelona where he was getting inconsistent minutes and he was in a mental slump from all that .The problem is that West is massively stacked and with the return of Lyles, he may see his role reduced. SAC this season are aiming higher than just playoffs appearance and pressure is much higher on coaching and GM to achieve results. Not sure what expectations are but if he stays around 7-8pts on 15-20min. first season, this will be good. He just needs to stay positive and forget bad games quickly otherwise, the slump can get worse and his role even more reduced. He needs to adjust to the pace and divensive intensity faster otherwise his role will be diminished. This will be a key to be more recognized by teammates and get more touches from them .There are barely no week teams in the West and almost every night SAC will be tested .

      @TMPOUZI 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      His defence so far is ok and his cuts are fast. Also he rebounds great despite the limited time he spends on court. The problem is the Sacs are a typical iso play NBA team with offensive talent, but only that, no creation at all, no domination on court, little defence, little extra pass and PnR or PnP

    • @rosenvasilev4219
      @rosenvasilev4219 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AugustasSuliauskas Definitely. He has around 2 weeks to show improvement because if Lyles starts good, Brown might not patient enough given the pressure he has on his shoulders and he will have to put a lot more effort to earn back his backup role . Oftentimes he plays, right next to his name comes the tag (Euroleague MVP) which makes him more of a target inside the team than for his opponents as performing better than Lyles is to be expected and everything less than that will lead to a reduced role. US media compares him to a taller Klay thompson which means hitting 3s which are even contested. They dont care if contested or not, they will look at the % of shots and simply say he is good/bad. All the expectations are that he is the missing piece to their next step which implies competing with Barnes for minutes not with Lyles and helping the team go up in the standing.

    I'm just happy he's a rotation player. He's not great yet but he's re-learning the game especially on the defensive side. Things he doesn't have to re-learn, that shot is automatic and he knows exactly when and where to cut and where the soft spot in a zone is. Plays great off of Monk and Sabonis. He's a lot stronger than I thought as well. I'm saying it now, he's going to have a takeover game in this coming 2024 playoffs.

    This is Klay Thompson modified with backdoor cuts rather than spot-up threes. But it's not news that he can thrive, as NBA players are loathe to exert on the defensive end. Even virtually all of the stars work harder on offense than the do on defense. It's a curious paradox of the NBA. Imagine the NFL where the cornerbacks exerted less effort than receivers ...

    What i get from seeing these moments is that they have virtualy stopped defending in the NBA. Sasha is not even doing anything truly extraordinary here. He is just moving around, trying to lose his defender, the same way we were taught to do when we were freaking teens. He is very good at it of course. But still, he is just implementing the basics.
    On the contrary. The defenders - wholeass NBA players here - are NOT doing the absolute basics of defending. NEVER lose sight of the ball and NEEEEEEEEVER lose sight of the player you are defending against when on man to man defence.
    I am not a basketball pro by any means. This is just what i was taught when I was like 12.

    There is a bulgarian football(soccer) player, called Dimitar Berbatov, whose playstyle was something similar and that's how he became famous - for not expending too much energy and yet being extremely useful. Maybe Sasha Vezenkov is the Dimitar Berbatov of bulgarian basketball. I'm sure Vezenkov will greatly improve in the next 2-3 seasons and get mentioned next to the Joker, Luka and Sabonis jr.
