Larry wouldn’t walk out on his team because they were losing. He gave everything he had. Won and lost as a team (leadership). Would come back injured to play. Larry Legend all day long.
The point that most forget, is Bird played 'full contact B Ball' and made those numbers. If you can't touch him, like you said yourself.. He'd be getting 40..
That and the preponderance of 3 pt shots in today's game. If you converted another 5 or 6 of Larry's FG attempts to 3pt FG attempts, that's about an automatic extra 7 or 8 PPG right there, just from taking more of his shots from the 3 line.
I don't think I've ever seen that MJ quote before. It's pretty awesome to see Mike giving Bird the props he deserves. Mike knew how hard it was to play in the 70s, 80's and early to mid 90's. Basketball was different then and Bird dominated in that physical era. He would absolutely destroy today's NBA with his skill set (and Jordan would probably score 50 a game in today's league honestly)
Larry LEGEND, love it !! Need more young men like you to educate them on the ART of basketball. Today's game is way to soft and it's all about look at me, no team concept.
LT, I'm glad they had that Michael Jordan quote. I think I posted it on one of your other videos. MJ would definitely know who is better between Bron and Bird, and he told his friends and acquaintances that Larry Bird is best SF in NBA history! This is why I have Bird, Duncan, Magic, Russell, and MJ in my top 5 with KAJ, Wilt, Hakeem, Shaq, and Lebron in my next 5.
That's a good list that you have. Let's see, who would be my first and second five: Wilt at center; Bird small forward; Russell power forward; MJ shooting guard and Magic at point. Second five: Kareem at center; Lebron small forward; Duncan power forward; Koby at shooting guard; Oscar Robertson at point. I picked based on position, not ranking all time. Hard to do that as it is so debatable. Anyway, couldn't go wrong with any of these guys. They would beat everyone today, no problem.
P.S. After Bird's 4th year, he never shot under .882 from FT and led NBA in FT% 4 out of next 7 years. Over those 7 years he shot .500/.390/.904 with 25.4/9.8/7.0 1.7stl and 1bk.
Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball......My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted......What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who was not only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, baseball, track & Field, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, and was what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique and gifted players, I have ever watched! Thank you Solidreacts, for your honest reaction ❤
Larry Bird’s game was transcendent. He always knew where everybody was on the court - not just on the Celtics, but the opposing team as well. We all know that some people are born to dance, some born to create great artwork, or compose beautiful music. Larry Joe Bird was born to play basketball. His drive to win, his drive to include his teammates and be a team player and team leader just existed in his innate ability to play the game better than anybody else. IMHO LeBron is not really there…I don’t think it is even a question that should be asked. The answer is obvious… it’s Larry legend. And don’t even get me started on the fact that there is no contact in today’s game. If you watch the players in the 80s, there was grabbing of jerseys, clotheslining, and elbows to the face. The players were tough and the refs let them play. How blessed I was to be able to live through those years and watch some of those white-knuckle games! LT, I appreciate you, as a younger basketball fan, going back and watching the evolution of basketball. I’d kind of like to see it toughen up a little bit and let those guys go out there and rip it up a bit. But those guys are worth so much money today you don’t even want them to break a fingernail. 😛
It's so true. The only way to beat Jordan, and in a lot of cases the only way to beat Bird as well, was the clock had to be registering all zeros when you made your last shot. Any time left was too much time.
Lets not forget to add, Larry did what he did most of his career with a very bad back, achilles surgeries, multiple facial injuries including a broken eye socket when he came back and continued to play
That's great but who cares. You can say Larry was a warrior playing like that but you can also say his body was made of glass with all those injuries. Lebron may not have been a "warrior" cause he never really got hurt but then you can say lebron is way more durable. At the end of the day this is where lebron fits in among the greats. Him and bird are neck and neck in my opinion at the 4th and 5th spot as greatest players of all-time. Can't go wrong with either
About clutch gene and sharpshooting, Larry was gifted and he practiced possibly more than anyone else. He would start practicing shots and worked his way back from the basket 6” at a time. Before games, etc. He practiced and wanted to be the one to get the ball 🏀 in a clutch time.
Mark Price of the Cavs. So under-rated as a point guard because of injuries. He finished his career with 90.4% free throw shotting and 40% 3-point shooting...for his career! He had a 94.7% free throw percentage one year and led the league 3 times in it.
What's crazy is how good his stats are as an unselfish player. Imagine what they would be if he had today's superstar mentality. He fed his team buckets all day.
You are correct. Bird did not have a selfish bone in his body. He wanted to win and he didn't care who scored as long as the team won. The Celtics during the Bird era played, perhaps, the best team ball of the league, and they won and won consistently. When it came to crunch time, Bird took over then, because the team expected him to, and he came through over and over. May be the greatest clutch player ever.
A lot of people point out LeBrons longevity some say it's today's medical science, some say it's because how the league is played. But it's hard to say if LeBron would have gotten as abused as Larry did if LeBron played back when Larry was. Only because Larry managed to do most of his worst injuries off the court. Larry screwed up his back in the offseason building his mom's driveway. Larry screwed up his hand after he was drafted but before he was even playing for the Celtics playing a friendly game of baseball. So maybe LeBron would still stay healthy longer than Larry did, but Larry still played half his career against some of the roughest teams in the league with a bad back and dominated.
@@catherinelynnfraser2001 Oh yeah he definitely did get hurt on the court. It's just the ones that seem to plague him for most of his career happened to have nothing to do with basketball. Although the ankle surgeries in 1989 were probably from playing and he said an interviews the moment they put that knife into you nothing's ever the same. So obviously not all his on court injuries went away.
The big thing with Larry being clutch, not only did he have so many game winners, but if they needed an overall performance, a steal, a block, etc... Larry was there. And absolutely in today's rules Larry would average at least 40/10/8 probably with a block and a couple steals too. He's a beast.
LT.. Man, I really dig the way you run your channel, and the way you think in a fair, logical manner, and your infectious laugh. We've watched all these games in the eighties and the Birdman is the greatest all around player we've ever seen. Best of luck from Texas. Best wishes for the New Year 2023.
Little known fact about Larry Bird. Is that in many black barber shops in the Boston area they had pictures of him up on the wall. This was during a time when racism was still a bit harsh. Thing is folks know greatness when it is in front of them. Larry Bird was just that, he was great as a Basketball player. Both he and Magic brought the NBA back from the brink of bankruptcy, they were the driving force for the NBA getting the big television contracts and the NBA made sure to have double header games on Sundays involving both the Celtics and the Lakers. Then during the Jordan era MJ took the league international. Those three men have done more for the game than anyone else has.
When Larry had DJ, Ainge, McHale & Parish he had 4 other players that could finish & were clutch players but Larry wanted the ball & the responsibility of taking the win. 🐦🐐

I hate when people try to compare players but dont set the NBA rules we are to judge them by. Playing ball in the 80s & 90s is completely different than playing today.
I love Larry Legend. I think he is the greatest all-around basketball player. However, I think a lot of people overlook Kareem and just how dominant he was. The man could score at will. Nobody could block his skyhook. He won at every level. He is definitely top three. ✌
That's why it's important to compare players via position. Bird and James are small forwards. Kareem was a center. It's like saying Tom Brady was better than Alvin Kamara.
Wilt Chamberlain blocked Kareem's skyhook on more than one occasion, the only player that could. I have Wilt as the greatest of all time, in my opinion, and Larry is definitely top 5. As for Lebron, yeah a great athlete, but never clutch in crunch time the way Bird was. Personally, I don't even think Lebron is close to Bird as an all around great basketball player.

Was Bird clutch? NBA coaching legend Pat Riley once said "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game I'd choose Michael Jordan; If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life...I'd take Larry Bird." Enough said...
I don't understand why you have Bird only averaging 5 rebounds in this era. In this era Bird would average right at a triple double if not a triple double. Just my opinion. I think his defensive stats would be close to the same. I understand what you said for sure but Bird got most of his steals and blocks because of timing and anticipating what a player was going to do. I swear sometimes i thought Bird was psychic.
Here’s how to explain it. I’m not sure how many teams are in the NBA now but imagine shrinking the current players into 20 teams. Each team was full of talent.
@ SOLIDREACTS... young man it's very enjoyable to see a young person give love and respect to my Favorite all time player...even though Larry is My Favorite here's my 10 best all time.... 1. Michael Jordan 2. Magic 3. Bird 4. Dr. J 5. Bill Russell 6. Kareem 7. Wilt 8. KG 9. Kobe 10. Tim Duncan Thoughts?
Larry. Why? Hustle. That's why. LeBron doesn't steal a ball, then brings it to the ground, then throws it to a teammate for a bucket. LeBron doesn't go after his own missed shots, then scores with the opposite hand while off balance. I do like LeBron though. Not trying to take away from him.
Curry and Klay both either had or was percentage points away from 50/40.90 seasons. Over the years, there were several players who shot 90% from the line.
Anyone who says Bron is more clutch than Bird has absolutely no knowledge about NBA basketball or any other basketball. Lebron is the least clutch player on the top 10 list!!!
i think reason bird didnt react to r.millers shoot was cause bird was thinking what the big deal thats millers job!!! birds like all i want is my players to do is their job the best they can win or lose
On the clutchness of Bird: Pat Reilly was once asked who'd he'd pick to take the final shot in a game. His reply? If the game was on the line, Michael Jordan. If his LIFE was on the line, Larry Bird.
Larry wouldn’t walk out on his team because they were losing. He gave everything he had. Won and lost as a team (leadership). Would come back injured to play. Larry Legend all day long.

He was better then your fav movie or best concert, bird was so gud he got bored and found away to entertain us each game ,I loved bball growing up ,,now I'm like this isn't bball, no defense cause I can't touch nobody #LB33 🐦❤️ Thats my guy always will be
Reggie almost did leave too much time on the clock. Jordan rattled out a near-impossible turn-and-shoot 3-peat heave Hail Mary.
Facts , thanks.
Cold blooded killer! Bird was the truth!!!!
Was Bird clutch? NBA coaching legend Pat Riley once said "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game I'd choose Michael Jordan; If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life...I'd take Larry Bird." Enough said...
40 years later that tells us all we need to know 🐐🐐🐐☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️33☘️☘️🐐
The 3 point shot was not implemented F into the NBA fully until 1979
I don't understand why you have Bird only averaging 5 rebounds in this era. In this era Bird would average right at a triple double if not a triple double. Just my opinion. I think his defensive stats would be close to the same. I understand what you said for sure but Bird got most of his steals and blocks because of timing and anticipating what a player was going to do. I swear sometimes i thought Bird was psychic.
Bird was the word.
I agree 100% for l put Larry Bird top 2 of All Time.
Larrry Legend. All day
Larry’s Altheticism Highlights 💥
Larry, by a mile!
Do the 50 greatest assists vid
Reggie miller and Steve Nash come to mind as great free throw shooters
Does anyone have a link to the video with the guy at the end talking about Bird beating everyone?
Calvin Murphy was pretty tight shooting those free throws... one year was close to 70 in a roll before missing.
MJ had a few seasons that he had 90% if I remember correctly
Here’s how to explain it. I’m not sure how many teams are in the NBA now but imagine shrinking the current players into 20 teams. Each team was full of talent.
@ SOLIDREACTS... young man it's very enjoyable to see a young person give love and respect to my Favorite all time player...even though Larry is My Favorite here's my 10 best all time....
1. Michael Jordan
2. Magic
3. Bird
4. Dr. J
5. Bill Russell
6. Kareem
7. Wilt
8. KG
9. Kobe
10. Tim Duncan
Thoughts?
Larry. Why? Hustle.
Lebron is the least clutch player on the top 10 list!!!
also don't forget that LeBron said that he fashioned his play after looking at Larry's game play
Speak tha truth bro
i think reason bird didnt react to r.millers shoot was cause bird was thinking what the big deal thats millers job!!! birds like all i want is my players to do is their job the best they can win or lose
On the clutchness of Bird:
Pat Reilly was once asked who'd he'd pick to take the final shot in a game. His reply?
If the game was on the line, Michael Jordan. If his LIFE was on the line, Larry Bird.
