I enjoyed this episode, Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash's characters were written greatly, the conflict and the moral was relatable, Zephyr did annoy me at first but when he explained that he has a fear of failure, he changed my mind and the song was great as well giving a great part in the resolution. I give it 9/10 for me ^^

I truly loved the moral and I liked it how Fulltershy is showing kindness in this episode. It shows how the writers know she is becoming a better pony and that Fulltershy is becoming a teacher of her own element.

Well done doctor. This episode didn't initially move me, mostly because I know someone literally like fluttershy's brother and was laughing at their similarities. However, you analysis has actually shed light on my own life. For once, I have literally stopped what I am doing and am contemplating my life.
So, I guess, thank you Doctor Wolf. Thank you.

This episode really hit home for me because I know someone who is *exactly* like Zephyr. He acts the same way and even looks like the guy, it was honestly kind of freaky. So seeing Zephyr succeed made me really hopeful for that someone's future. In fact I think I'll be checking in on them. Maybe a bit of encouragement from a friend could help. :)

The thing that I found the most intriguing was something Fluttershy's parents said, "We aren't as bold as you are." That really delves pretty deeply into who Fluttershy is. As a foal and young filly, Fluttershy's parents likely never pushed her to try and stand up for herself because she may have already appeared so bold to them. And Fluttershy being the older sibling is also a very interesting idea and sets up a completely different dynamic than if she had been the younger.

    "..failure is the worst!"
    "But is quitting any better?"
    "No..."
I shall try to do things outside my comfort zone... I will try... That's the biggest thing I took from this episode. There is that fear of failure for me in most things I do that I never done before, like going to conventions outside my state or... working with new people, or even taking those first baby steps to asking for help. But this episode has been a good motivator ^^

Tbh 10/10 episode of the entire series. A flawed character like this needed to happen. An episode like this needed to happen. This and Amending Fences are my two favorite slice of life episodes.

I've known a couple people who seem to just be coasting off of others' efforts. I'd like to show them this episode, because I think it approaches this subject and the resulting lesson brilliantly. Because unless a person can motivate themselves through a challenge, they will eventually find themselves unable and ill-equipped to deal with life's challenges in general. Eventually they'll have dug a trap so deep that no amount of help can get them out, or they'll get in a situation where no assistance is available, and have to act alone. Quitting and shutting down is never the answer.

Fluttershy really seams to be the one tackling most of the mature morals. Also it's nice to see that the growth she's gone through in previous episodes are actually sticking, particularly the tough love lesson from It ain't easy being breezies.

    Honestly...?
This episode made me feel SOOOO uncomfortable.
When Zephyr Breeze started talking to Fluttershy out there in the woods, it actually stopped me cold. It's better to not try than try and fail... I have LITERALLY thought those exact words so many times.

I enjoyed this episode. At first I really hated Zephyr Breeze, but I liked the song in the end and after watching a second time I can kind of empathize with his fear of failure. I also liked seeing Fluttershy be assertive throughout the episode. It seems the lessons of assertiveness she had learned over and over again really did pay off in the end.

I think that Zephir was pretty realistic in here. His parents were always soft to him, so he ever felt like growing up and becoming independent is a must... so he didn't. And his behavior was really accurate then.

  • @asuraludu

This episode seriously hit me right in the heart. I had my own Zepher in the form of my ex-friend/roommate. He had talent and charm. If he seriously applied himself he could have gone far. But all he really wanted was to sponge off me and avoid doing what he needed to get a decent job. Heck I even helped by sending out his resumes, looking up support groups he could contact. But it was all met with a "no" from him every time and ultimately I had to let him go.
The manipulation tactics he used on his sister and parents were so textbook I had to smile. They were the same used by my ex-roomie.
    - Talk fast so the target can not get a word in.
    - Use words and phrases to make the target think it was their idea or garner sympathy.
    - Maintain physical contact as to lower the targets mental guard (roughly 7 to 10 seconds).
    - Approach from behind so the target cant read body language.
Seeing his expressions along with the body sweat, it was clear that the priority with Zepher was losing a meal ticket and not his parents' love/respect.
I'm glad the show didn't follow my course, and that they encouraged that being firm as well as helpful can turn others around. Even in baby steps.

I really liked this episode. Zephyr kind of reminds me of how I was at the age of 20. Somewhat fresh out of high school I had aspirations of getting my pilot's license and making a living flying, but I was hesitant of actually getting started due to the risk of failing and losing that dream. I eventually managed pushed myself out of my comfort zone and started to pursue that goal.
4 years later and I now have a decent job in my career field, am almost done with college, and I've got my pilot's license as well as a plan for the future.

Well, this explains why Fluttershy tolerated Discord in her home like she did. She's had practice- though you'd think she'd have mentioned it when the other five questioned her abilities with Discord.

Already a favorite of the season. I feel like this episode plays to a lot of college kids, honestly and how I know a good deal of people who just won't even try b/c they feel something is too hard or is challenging. I also have to say I'm guilty as well. When I first got to college for zoology, the classes were so difficult and arduous that I didn't even want to do it anymore. I wanted to take another animal related major that wouldn't be as hard, but as I explored, I realized that (unless I switched colleges) I wasn't going to find a major that was easier, pertained to my interests, and actually land me a job of where I wanted to be in life. My parents pushed me to keep trying and not give up while being encouraging to if I wanted to switch majors. They just wanted me to be happy and not give in when things got hard. So here I am, three years later and entering my senior year in the fall. Still in zoology, but having more confidence than I did in previous semesters. The next classes are going to be hard, but even if I never use this stuff again in real life (which is honestly what probably will happen from talking to people in the workforce now with my major) it'll give me the satisfaction that I COULD do it. That I had the perseverance and the determination to push through the bad times. Aaaaaaand one big paragraph later and you can tell, again, how much I liked this episode XD It's a good lesson that kids might not understand now, but they'll appreciate when they're older : )

  • @mothsolotl

I was ecstatic with the development of Fluttershy's matured assertiveness - keeping a level head for the majority of her conflict with her brother, knowing that she needed to keep a mature attitude towards Zephyr's immature displays while venting her frustrations away from those she's trying to help. Zephyr actually was relatable, as I too, being inexperience and immature, find myself with a lack of work ethic while still wanting to make a contribution. The lesson of getting out of your comfort zone for both your own future and for finding potential in other people's futures has made this episode one of my favorites of season 6 of MLP. Honestly, the way you format your videos, from the musicless audio to the calm demeanor, encourages people like me to make their contribution to a community of people willing to discuss, so you'll have people sharing personal experiences and opinions without the video feeling fake or unengaging. All-in-all, I'm glad people like you exist on TH-cam, within the brony community, and in real life.

Something that I hope gets touched on is the dynamic of older sister to younger brother, which hasn't been explored yet. Having two younger brothers myself really helped me enjoy this episode. Also, I liked that her brother was grown up, and not a filly like the CMC and their Mane Six relations. It just goes to show that when you get older, you and your siblings can still be good friends. Good lesson.

I found Zephyr annoying because he reminds me of some people I know, who are just so egotistical, yet haven't faced any real challenges, because their parents keep "backing them up." It's so frustrating to see that combination of traits, because not only is it someone who has an ego, but they have nothing to back that ego up, because they never face challenges themselves. Fluttershy's approach is really the best: they have to face those challenges themselves to really get over this behavior.

One reason why I don't read fanfiction, because they often are in danger of just being shattered into a million pieces.
Also, I felt some uncomfortable feelings watching Zephyr. I knew person who was an ex-gf, who had a younger brother who also wasn't very motivated, and also seemed to do nothing but mooch off his parents. She then requested he move in with her, and she tried to help him get a job, but I don't think it worked (word was he soon got addicted to taking the train to a nearby casino). So, yes, Fluttershy's expressions at times did remind me of her.

We may not have known anything about Fluttershy's family, but we definitely knew a lot of Fluttershys. Fluttershy, Flutterbat, Flutterguy, Flutterholly; I wonder who's next. I actually really liked the episode because it creates a character that you want to hate, but you can't help putting yourself in his shoes. This episode has really changed my life because I saw the parallels between Zephyr Breeze and myself. I don't want to be like that, and Fluttershy wouldn't want me to be like that, so I can work towards changing myself for the better.

I just want to point out, how differently Fluttershy acted when Zypher was around, it's like as she was instantly done with his garbage, there wasn't any build up to her getting madder, as someone who works with family in a family business, I can confirm that dealing with in work matters is harder than regular people

  • @BlueHeartTattoo

This episode and Zephyr actually reminds me a lot of my brother and the exact same situation that Zephyr go through, but for my brother this sort of thing happens almost all the time (being an freeloader, taking advantage of my mother and job opportunities, etc.). Luckily for now, he just got a job and he is a little better than he was before. I actually did had a few unpleasant flashbacks watching it, but what makes me enjoy the episode more than I should have is the moral and how it is presented. I really love how the writer wanted to give this kind of moral to kids and adults; to show him that they do have a potential to succeed if they have the drive to work pass our fears and insecurities and improve ourselves, which to me this episode does an wonderfully well-done job.

  • @Frikken
    @Frikken 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I loved this episode because it reflects me about a year ago. I was unwilling to push myself to do more and get a job to help out my family because I wanted to "focus on my career".
It took an opportunity literally appearing in my face for me to finally jump into the working world and it actually helped me to not only develop myself more professionally, but it encouraged me to continue with my calling while evolving my career choice. Now my current job has me closer than ever with what I want to do in life while still challenging me every day.
But if I hadn't jumped at that opportunity, I'm afraid I'd find myself exactly like Fluttershy's brother, still unwilling to put myself out there because I didn't want anything to challenge me and take me out of my comfort zone. I think many people are in this situation and could really benefit from this episode. It really is a wake-up call that shows just how much of a burden you can be on others when you refuse to accept change.

Just a year ago I gave up on uni after a year, and I didn't really cared for what would happen next, now I'm an Au Pair and going back to some kind of studie after the summer really scares me, mostly because I'm really bad at finishing things, this episode is one I will come back to when I'm in doubt, so I'm happy it has come now before I start studying again.

I felt uncomfortable watching this story because I saw my younger self in Zephyr. I was so scared of everything, but mainly, like Zephyr, I was afraid of failure. It took me taking a leap of faith and moving out to a random area of the U.S. to finally put myself together and become the person I needed myself to be to finally be at peace with myself. I finally became a bestselling writer (Amazon sadly not any of the big charts) and I became an accountant for a F500 company. I also run a business, something I have always wanted to do. This episode was a great look back at the person I was and the man I finally became. Were it not for all that I would have never met my wife or done any of the other things that I have done or will do.
Anyway thanks for another great review Dr. Wolf. I look forward to many more.

I'm afraid that I'm more like Zephyr Breeze that I care to admit. I've REALLY fallen far behind schedule with my online college. I am also a type 1 diabetic who's parents' medical coverage over me will expire at the end of the year and will need Medicaid (if I can afford and am eligible for it). Still living with my parents at the age of 25 and only a part-time job as a restaurant dishwasher and a beekeeping business that so far only consist of eight hives. I'm really going to have to push myself to get more done and struggle to get my accountant's degree and begin a life of my own. I can emphasize a lot with this episode and even Fluttershy's brother who also often got on my nerves while at the same time making me smile at his antics. Is there anything you'd like to say to me in a reply Doc that can help me, please? Also, thanks for spotting that Legend of Zelda reference and closing your review with it; didn't notice that myself!

Hi, I usually don't comment but this episode came too close to home to keep quiet. I really liked Flutershy family's, they really show an family dynamics where a character like Fluttershy really would be nurtured, and as you said I've also felt uncomfortable, but more because I have someone in my family that is just like Fluttershy's brother and I'm the one who have to deal with him, so I really feel Fluttershy's pain in this episode. I've only felt a little put aback by how simple the solution seemed, when by experience I know that is not that easy, but I can understand that the episode has a time limit. Still, a wonderful review for a really good episode! Keep the good work, I love your videos.

Nicely done review DR :) I'm always surprised by how quickly you get these out. And since I don't have anyone in my life I can talk to about MLP yours are the first thoughts I get to hear on new episodes. And oh my Celestia, what an episode!! I was not expecting Zephyr to be taken in that direction...I don't know what I was expecting when I imagined Fluttershy's brother, but he was not it. Still, once I got to know him it became apparent that he really couldn't have been anything else. He's perfect and the family dynamic they were quickly able to create was so realistic. Overall I'm a huge fan of the episode. One thing that really confuses me however is his cutie mark. What is it? And how is someone with a cutie mark so directionless? Is this the form depression and mental illness take in Equestria? When your fears and self-doubt get in the way of your passion in life? I would really love your take Dr.Wolf (and any other pegasister or brony who care to comment).

I can relate to Zephyr Breeze. in a way, such as the fact i haven't bothered to develop my own style. and instead using bases and images to help me make my art.
And i'm may try one day to make my own style and stick with it, and not going to other people's bases and images to make my own.

I think my favourite part (although it was subtle) was when Zephyr spoke about Fluttershy and Rainbow not knowing how he felt because they saved Equestria so many times. It kind of suggests he's been overshadowed by Fluttershy. I've always wanted to see how the Mane 6's families react to their siblings/child being saviours of Equestria, and whether any of them felt overshadowed by that.

I could relate a lot to Zephyr Breeze. In fact, I can relate more than I'd like to admit. I hate challenging myself and throughout my life I've lived a lifestyle filled with a carefree attitude and a self-centered mindset. I've been my own worst enemy in many ways by allowing my fears of new responsibilities and my lazy tendencies to keep me from being fully independent and self-sufficient. The result of this is pathetic and shameful.
I'm 26 years old and about to turn 27, yet I still live with my family, don't have a driver's license, never went to college or even finished high school, never been in a relationship and have zero dating experience, and the only real job that I've held in my entire life has been working at my family's restaurant for 8 years which is going to close soon and force me to work for someone other than family for the first time.
It also doesn't help that I've never been able to settle on one particular thing as a career interest and nothing seems to motivate me enough in the world to drive me towards higher education or a trade school. So yeah, this episode hit home for me. I've been severely held back in life development due to my fear of responsibilities and overall laziness.
It doesn't get much more pathetic and cringe-worthy than my life story. I just thought I'd share since this episode made me feel compelled to open up. I won't fault anyone who reads this for judging me. I think its only natural for other people to respond that way due to the nature of my confession. It is what it is.

You did a superb job in analyzing this episode. This one was certainly one that I was very curious how you'd review it based on its content. What's really good about "Flutter Brother" is how it is truly an episode that different age groups can appreciate for different reasons while each getting the overall moral. It is also one where, if you are in the target, age demographic, coming back to watch it after you've grown up will make it an entirely different experience from when you saw it as a kid.

Wow, this episode really touched me because it practically resumes my life, back in 2010 I was super happy an I had everything I wanted, but then my father passed away, ever since this I felt that something was missing in my life; in 2013 I found the series and in the next year I found the MLP Wiki, I'd expend 4 months to decided If I'll help the community or not because I was so terrified about what could happen, I had the same feeling a couple weeks ago when I decided to do episode review in my channel.

This was a great episode, and I loved how well the characters were written. The lesson about challenging yourself and stepping out of your comfort zone resonated with me. Being hesitant to try new things out of fear of failure is something that I often struggle with, (looking for jobs and spending time away from home is not easy). BTW, Zephyr reminded me of Gilderoy Lockhart from Harry Potter.

This episode hit home with me. Because I have a hard getting out and trying new things because I start to imagine all the ways I'll fail rather then if it turns out successful. I loved this episode probably my favorite this season, and one of my top ten favs for the show in its entirety. I thought that the moral was something we all need to learn at one point or another, whether we are a adult or a child.

The only other character I’ve gotten to see fleshed out like that Dr. Sheldon Cooper.
I watched episodes and videos of his antics probably back in early high school and I laughed. I couldn’t think better about the very real consequences of both his behavior and putting up with someone like that. The ending of Season 5, Episode 13 started to open my eyes about this.
That was the start of my growing detachment from the show and absolutely everything it normalized. Now that I see such a person actually develop and prove to be redeemable, it makes me more glad that I’ve learned the dangers of such people. And how much like that I could have been.

    Dr. Wolf.
This is proving to be my favorite season so far. This season is touching on a lot of things that have been bothering me ever sense I had joined this fandom. And this episode was no different. I did enjoy the contrast of the two siblings as well. It showed so much of Flutershy's growth in the show, and finally we have some true canon details on her family. The only family left is Rainbow's. That is my hope now. I hope they will give us something with her family. What are your thoughts Dr Wolf?

  • @MLP-Trinary
    @MLP-Trinary 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I really enjoyed this episode especially as it was more or less new ground for Fluttershy. That is, it wasn't her overcoming her shyness or fears for the umpteenth time. She was shown to be smart and on the ball right from the get go and didn't need one of her friends holding her hoof to know what the right thing to do was. They were there to help, but she didn't need them to guide her. I really liked that.
I have a hard time gauging what I think about Zephyr as I'm too close to this issue to view it objectively, seeing as I still do live with my family--something that, if the news is to be believed, is becoming more widespread among millenials than previous generations. I was deeply impressed that MLP tried to tackle an issue this mature and was geared towards people who still rely on their family.
That said, I think they could've shown Zephyr as someone afraid to try and, intentionally or not, taking advantage of his family's support without going so far as to make him, well, an insufferable jerk who wrecked other people's homes for his own petty comfort. There's a line between being insensitive and not realizing you're inconveniencing others and just being .... well, being a d--bag. Despite Zephyr being a caricature of grown children who still lives with their parents, I'm inclined to give it a pass as the message and resolution was handled very well.
The comedy with Rainbow Dash being disgusted and horrified by Zephyr thinking that she liked him was very funny. At the same time, she was happy for his success too. A nice touch.
    I'd give this a 4 out of 5.

When both you and the episode spoke about continuing to do something, even if it's very hard, I remembered my dream of going to University. I'm only in ninth grade but University is a big dream of mine because I'd love to do a bachelor of design media, which, if anyone doesn't know, is basically an artist's dream, with learning possibilities from clothing designs to graphic design. In order to get into that bachelor, I must have an OP of 16, which is pretty hard for my standards, and for a while I didn't think I'd be able to do it, I doubted my abilities, but seeing this helped me realize that, I'm very good at school, I'm very passionate for design and good at it, and achieving that dream would make me the happiest person alive. Art may be seen as nerdy or strange or out of place even, but so am I, and I will do everything in my power to get into university. So Doctor, I thank you for helping me rid myself of doubt, and realize just how great I want to be. Fantastic review, refreshing viewpoint and of course, amazing Wolf.

Finally another good Fluttershy episode, this is probably the best Fluttershy episode since "Hurricane Fluttershy", which, in my opinion, was the last really good one. They finally had Fluttershy being consistently assertive, without going overboard, at a time where she needed it most, helping a family member. For the first time, I feel like I finally like Fluttershy, she's nowhere near one of my favorite, but, I like her now and that's a start.

Even though Zypher did scare me a little bit, I saw a little bit of myself in him. I was glad to move out of my parent's home, but I was also scared. Now that I've been on my own for almost a year, it's gotten easier, but in the beginning it wasn't easy. However, unlike Fluttershy's parents, mine didn't coddle me. My mom helped me find a place, and even went shopping with me for a few things for my apartment. I can certainly see how this episode can be more relevant to people my age instead of younger children. I never really knew what I wanted to do with my life at first, but once I discovered teaching and how much I enjoyed being around the students, it made me want to continue my education and thanks to my wonderful boss, i was able to both work part-time as well as go to school. In fact, I think this episode is more for parents than it is the kids. It teaches the parents what can happen if they are too kind to their kids and never push them.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who likes Zephyr Breeze. Since this episode debuted, fans have been speculating up the WAZOO about all his trivial details, like his sexuality. If they're not speculating him, they're likely criticizing him as incredibly annoying and unlikeable. It's refreshing to see someone find good in his character.
As for me, you took the words right out of my mouth, doc. I admit that my initial reception of Zephyr was ranging from mixed to negative, but when he finally broke down and showed his true colors, that's when I liked him. His struggle is all too real and I can really relate to it. I imagine Zephyr, in human years, to have his age range from possibly 18 to his early 20's, and for a human being, surviving your first years of independence as a young adult can be daunting and challenging. In fact, this time of your life is expected to be turbulent. This is your time to make final decisions pertaining to who you want to be, what you want to do for the rest of your life, how you'll get there, and where you'll get it. Everything can seem so up in the air, and the future can look uncomfortably hazy, and it takes a lot of confidence out of you.
Being a college student in his early 20's, I struggle IMMENSELY with making the transition from care-free adolescent to fully mature and responsible adult. There are some things that you have to master in order to be considered a full-fledged adult, like managing your time and money wisely, getting enough sleep at night, having the drive to do hard things, keeping your focus on the here and now, on the things you can control, rather than fear about the future and things you can't control.
And then of course, as the episode addressed, there's the fear of failure. For me, I struggle with the mentality that if I don't see as much as a glimpse of the positive consequences that follow taking the right risks and making the right sacrifices, then I freeze up and try waiting for the storm to pass. Why should I bother doing something hard if I don't have some sort of tangible proof that it's going to be worthwhile? By choosing to not take chances or give life a much fairer try, I continue to make my future dim and hazy, knowing that if I come to my senses and make the turnaround, I'll get opposite results.
Growing up while under my parent's responsibility, I've come to notice how much of all the hard "adult stuff" they did for me. To go from having so much given to me without much effort from my end to having to take care of some of these things myself...that really threw me for a loop. Again, I'm still trying to make the transition, and I'm trying to figure out how I can find the inner drive in me to make that happen.
To recap, Zephyr Breeze would've been another pointlessly annoying new character if it weren't for him having such a real struggle to which almost anyone can relate. From time to time, I'd ponder about all the characters, major and minor, that have existed in the show, and then I'd determine which one I'm most like. At this point, that character is definitely Zephyr. The only thing that differs between us is that you could never pay me enough money to put my hair in a man-bun. LOL

I liked this episode, but it made me very uncomfortable. I could not help but feel a connection with Zephyr due to how he acted and why, which infuriated me. Logically speaking, I can look at myself and find plenty of examples that show I do not have his flaws (especially his ego), but the desire to not try things out of a fear of uncertainty or a fear of failure is a vice that resonates with me too much for my own comfort. Essentially, Zephyr at his worst is my greatest nightmare about what I could become and that unsettled me greatly.
Otherwise a great episode. I really loved Fluttershy here. Seeing her trying to take charge of the situation and persistently hold it throughout the episode does her character great justice. This may well be my favorite Fluttershy episode by far.
