    The man singing the lyrics in this musical is the reigning American chess world champion. He’s in Bangkok to defend his title against a soviet player. A game he ultimately loses to his Soviet opponent. The entire play uses a US-USSR chess rivalry as a metaphor for the Cold War, but this song is mostly known for the double-entendres. It’s one of my favorite musicals of all time.

  • @gusrouff
    @gusrouff 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    He was talking about chess tournaments being held in all these big seedy cities but the chess players aren’t into all of the stuff normal tourists would be. They are after a ‘different’ type of queen - one that can’t be found on the streets but in the chess board. They get their kicks above the waistline - meaning their brains / cerebral fitness - chess is a brain game. Thats what I always got from this song. Loved this ! One of my favs.

    • @johnliller
      @johnliller ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You would think it was literally about chess but Chess, the rock opera not the game, is an allegory for the cold war spy game between east and west.

      It's the curse of the traveling artist. All the cities look the same because you are focused on the next move on the board. It also as A LOT of double meanings...

    • @thebronywiking

      It's held in Merano. At least in act 1.

    • @rickardroach9075

      @@thebronywiking This song opens Act 2. In the stage version, the beginning cacophony is twice as long and starts with the orchestra tuning up to an A.

    • @AlexanderLiffers
      @AlexanderLiffers 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@rickardroach9075 In Merano the Russian played the American, who is quite an antagonist. The Russian wins, I think because the American has a hissy fit and forfeits. He's portrayed as a bit of a dick. This second act is some significant time later, a year or more, and the Russian is defending his title against another player and the American from the Merano match shows up as a member of the press gallery. This song is being sung by the American as a journalist doing his field piece from Bangkok and basically belittling the place because he's still a bit of a dick. The thing is from the cold war but makes both sides look childish and petulant instead of the typical hero American and cold Russian trope we were fed constantly in the 1980s.

    I LOVED this song when it came out! As others have already said, it's from the musical 'Chess,' about a chess tournament held in Bangkok, where two women are competing for the love of one of the players. Fun fact: the singer of this song, Murray Head, is the brother of Anthony Head, who played Giles in the tv series 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'Angel.'

    • @michaelwilliamybarra2409
      @michaelwilliamybarra2409 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anthony Head was also Nathan/Repo Man in the film Repo: The Genetic Opera, and when this musical first premiered in the West End in 1986, Anthony would take over as The American/Freddie Trumper, after his brother Murray who originated this role in that production.

    One of my favourite songs from the 80's. "the arbitor" from the same musical is also good. Murray Head is the brother of English actor Anthony Head.

    This song is from the musical Chess that was written by Benny and Bjorn from ABBA, and the guy singing it is the older brother of Anthony Stewart Head who played Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

    haha it's so interesting to see a reaction to this song if you aren't aware that it's from a musical- like others have said, it's a song from the musical "Chess", written in the 80's from the boys from ABBA. it's about 2 chess grand masters playing in a tournament, who are also fighting over the same woman. they tour the world playing chess, with this match occurring in Bangkok. I loved this soundtrack as a kid, and now I wonder how my parents let me listen to it as the whole musical is fairly subversive lol.

      Well the American isn't really fighting over the woman - he's just being a jerk because ... well because he's a jerk. "Pity the Child" sums up the character and his feelings so well - he knows what he's doing is wrong but he's so self pitying and self-absorbed that he hurts others just to feel better about himself. He doesn't care about her - it's that she left him to go with his rival that is the issue for him.

    The hook is sung by Swedish singer Anders Glennmark who was a big star in Sweden in the 90s mostly due to him being in the group GES, they mostly did songs in Swedish but it’s a nice 90s band.

    Written by the ABBA boys - Bjorn and Benny with lyrics by Tim Rice from the musical "Chess". Some of these songs from "Chess" were rejected or unused portions of ABBA songs. For instance a song they sang during their 1977 international tour titled "I am an A" became "I Know Him so Well" in Chess. Great music.

    I loved this song as a kid and I loved the Vinylshakerz cover of this song. In 2003, when I was in the Marines, I went on the Cobra Gold deployment and it had us set up near Pattaya Beach. You'd constantly see people swarming "Boys town" or "Walking street" and if you went into the Go-go bars or buy-me-drinkie bars there was a 100% chance that you would hear "One Night in Bangkok" both versions and the "Ketchup song" constantly...

    It’s from a musical-Chess. Murray Head sang the part of Judas in the original version of Jesus Christ Superstar, which is fabulous. The album. The musical Chess is about a puppet master & the ‘the chess game’ of power. His brother, Anthony, played the part of Giles the librarian in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. He can sing too.
