One of my favourite guitarists growing up in the 70’s heavy Hendrix influence in his early stuff and maintained quality through multiple albums. First album was called Maxoom and included a tribute to Hendrix called ‘Buddy’
Hello Sight after Dark, By the you reacted to this, I am sure you`ll be blown away by the Insane guitar work from Frank Marino on his monster track called DITCH QUEEN. It is graced by arguably one of the greatest and heaviest guitar solos ever put down on a killer rock song.
The Canadian Hendrix! FM & MR laid down some solid tracks way back in the day, and I believe Frank was active up until about a year ago when he suddenly and unexpectedly announced his retirement. They had one of the best live rock and roll albums of the 70's which included excellent covers of "Johnny B. Goode" "I'm A King Bee / Backdoor Man" their one FM radio hit, "Dragonfly" and even closes out with some "Purple Haze."
Haha, points to you both, he's Canadian. He's uncle to a guitarist called Dan Marino who is in some metal band I've never heard of. Enjoyed your reaction. The rhythm was simple but I don't care. I need red meat and musically this is a big lump of red meat. The rhythm is just the plate and I don't care what type of plate it's served on...if you know what I mean. Frank is under-rated even though he had moderate success in the 70's/80's. This is from 2000 and his strong religious beliefs come through on this album. If they played this in church, I'd go, lol.. He retired last year. Not sure the full reasons but suffered ill health for a while He's not the only "Frank" who can do awesome extended guitar solos. Like the other Frank too, he started off playing drums until his early teens when he took up guitar. I'm glad I introduced you to him and thanks for the great reaction.
What a fine guitar player. I would really be into this more if I were smoking weed but I gave that up quite some time ago. I see he has some live videos that I will be definitely checking out. Good choice Paul.
His albums Strange Universe, Mahogany Rush IV, World Anthem, and The Power Of Rock 'N' Roll are my favorite studio albums. Anything live is awesome, especially the Blu-ray/DVD boxset, Frank Marino Live At the Agora Theatre. Frank is Dan Marino's uncle, son of Vince, who played with Frank for a few years..
I have alot of Canadian bands on my love list. And this is one of them. Glad Paul trotted this one out. Kind of lost track of their later works like this gem. I saw them open for Kansas on the Point Of No Return tour when they were still the original three piece and they were mesmerizing. I really fell in love with their first three albums and those trippy album covers. Frank, Buck Dharma, Frank Zappa and Dickey Betts are responsible for me becoming a life long SG player. I didn't realize how light they were or anything technical at the time. I just knew if I was gonna play, I wanted to emulate them! I believe Marino's original story was that the spirit of Jimi Hendrix entered into him during a thunderstorm while he was tripping on acid 🤣! Not sure if I'm drinking that kool-aid but damned if he doesn't channel his inner Hendrix. Marino and Robin Trower have both made a living from using the Hendrix play book. Cheers to them both and Cheers to Paul for picking something I've never heard before. Great reaction guys!!
Glad you liked it Chaz. It's a bit tighter and controlled to some of his earlier stuff but I love it. He's still giving it big licks as it fades out. I imagine an hour later, he's still going, the cleaner is pacing about waiting to clean the place, lol.
I am so used to listening to He' s Calling live at the Agora. Same structure if the song but different changes different notes also a viollin to mix in.Thank you for sharing the original version of He' sCalling. Canadian s
Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush are my favorite band. This album is Crank's last studio album from 2000. Frank is a legend in the guitar world. This album is the album he always wanted to make. Frank is known as the original shredder. Frank is Canadian from Montreal. His skills range from face melting rock to blues to jazz and everything in between. He is known for his technique and precision. He started his music career in 1969 at age 15. He formed theband in 1971. You must check out their 1978 live album, the album I discovered them in 1978. Frank is ,again legendary in the guitar and music world. Thank you for checking them out. His music is not radio friendly but some real in you face rock music.
Better to say STP sounds a bit like Mahogany Rush. Not sure when M.R. began but I saw them in '78 (Cal Jam 2) and in '80(?) (Long Beach) so way before STP existed. Frank Marino is GOOD and he's underrated. Strong Hendrix influence can be heard in much of his playing.
@@mikedown3219 No idea what you are trying to say here. Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush (M.R.) has always been Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - True. STP (Stone Temple Pilots) has nothing to do with M.R. as far as I know, except that Dan & Sifa said M.R. sounds like STP. My point was that M.R. were around long before STP. So STP spunds like M.R., not the other way around.
Mahogany Rush was right up there with BOC as my favorite bands. Frank Marino such a MONSTER talent guitar-wise and vocalist. Try his "Makin My Wave" or "Dragonfly". It's all good.
Saw Frank and Mahogany Rush in the mid-70s, opening for I don't recall who. Considering they had four albums out, I was somewhat perturbed that he felt compelled to play I think it was no less than four impressively yet alarmingly faithful renditions of Hendrix covers ('In the West' version, right✅️) I too heard the hospital acid-trip recovery/soul migration genesis narrative. Whatever. The man definitely can play his ass off, construct an interesting array of structures to embellish in his own fashion and he merits being heard, imho. Sorry if I'm not certain about the state of his health but I've been otherwise occupied. Good on him, and on you. Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year. Be as SAD as you like. Enjoy TF out of it. Iirc, Corky Laing, drummer for Mountain, had something to do with a bunch at least of their early albums. 😀
One of the very best! Certainly one of MY all-time favorites.. If you want alttle more hard-driving flavor from Frank, try something from the "Power of Rock" and "What's Next". You cant go wrong! Enjoyed your reactions guys.
....Welcome back. I grew up with Frank Merino and Mahogany Rush - we were called "Jesus Freaks" because of our Faith and always looking for rock musicians who talked about spiritual stuff. Frank was one of those for us - Hewrote about "He's Calling" which for us implied the Almighty, Frank Merino is an Orthodox Christian, the real deal. He had to retire because of an ailment - he never used drugs or drank. But it's not about being perfect.
Love all the pinch harmonics. Love how the solo goes on and on especially the guitar’s gritty tone. Plus the Indian modality that pops up throughout. Lose the singing tho. 😂
'He's Calling' is one of Frank's more sedate and cerebral jams, kinda 'Indian' sounding. Many of his other tunes are more visceral and energetic. Try 'Somethings Coming our Way' or 'Ain't Dead Yet' or 'Johnny Be Goode' from Live. That will put some spice in your life. :)
I believe he is one of the most underrated guitar players in Rock and Roll. This man is a master at his craft!
well said🙂
Agree 100%
I saw Frank many times live
He always play for 3 hours plus
Amazing guitarists
Very cool guy
Frank Marino is a BEAST! Probably one of the top 5 rock guitar players of ALL times!

Yeah, those were the days, when both Mahogany Rush and BOC were cranking out back-splitting releases almost once a year. Will never see that again.
Frank Marino is a beast on the guitar! Great song by a great Canadian band! 🇨🇦

Wow, we didn’t know that about his nephew! 😆our joke was referring to Dan Marino from the Miami Dolphins. Thanks as always Paul!

Frank started in 1969 at around 14 or 15 - he influenced SRV, Bonamassa, Zakk Wylde, and a host of others
His albums Strange Universe, Mahogany Rush IV, World Anthem, and The Power Of Rock 'N' Roll are my favorite studio albums.

He started out as Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush so, one and the same.

One of my favorites since the 1970s.... he is a reincarnation of Hendrix.... simply amazing!
Mahogany Rush was right up there with BOC as my favorite bands. Frank Marino such a MONSTER talent guitar-wise and vocalist. Try his "Makin My Wave" or "Dragonfly". It's all good.
check out Something's Coming Our Way from Live at Agora Theatre - or his Johnny B Goode live
I wanted to recommend Frank Marino and Mahagony Rush doing the song Johnny B Goode from the Mahagony Rush Live album.

Thanks for being here Thomas!
First saw Frank and his band on the show Don Kirshner's Rock Concert in 1975. The almost 22 minute clip is still on TH-cam.
He's just an "Ordinary Man"
Ordinary Man Great song!
Framks masterpiece! I never get tired of the tribal groove thang.
It’s fantastic! Thanks Miguel!

Canadian ; singer guitarist band members Mahony rush , psychedelic rock & roll.
try "all along the watch tower"
I know I am a year late, but if you still view comments, check out the live version of this song.

Sounded like Frank Zappa to me
Tip: Something’s coming our way from What’s Next. Please!
You don’t know Frank Marino?? Too bad.
We do now!
