The Marimo I recently bought, I suspected it was fake just by the way it looked and felt. I brought it back to the store, they switched it out and this one looks so much better and real thankfully! My pet store has massive marimo, but they are too big for any of the containers I want to use and it seems like the pet store has allowed the larger ones to start dying. If I propagate them, about how long will they take to regain their rounded shape? I'm just worried about damaging them permanently. Thanks~ Keep up the good work on your videos! Can't wait for the next marimo segment :)
DarknessFireBlade Hi, Pet stores are sellers, not really a "caretaker" so often they lack the care of these little precious guys. It takes a long time for Marimos to grow together, so I would not suggest to purposely break them up to propagate unless it's already splitting up. Thank you for watching! :)
I have a few imperfect marimos that I have been caring for and I've started to notice that they have a sulfur smell. It usually goes away after I bathe them and change their water, but by their next bath a week or two later, the smell comes back. Is this smell something natural or is it a sign of bad health for my marimos? If so, is there anything I can do to help them?
I understand that its been over a year, but the sulfur smell is likely anaerobic bacterial growth inside of the ball. It can be a sign of decay, but this is unlikely if the water quality is good. You could try keeping the the water temperature under 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and aerate the water. This can be done by agitating (shaking or storing vigorously for 5-10 seconds) the the replacement water before adding the marimos.

I just got my first marimo! I got it from the pet store, never knew they sold them at the betta fish section. It's not as round as yours, a little lumpytoo. But hopefully it becomes nice and round like yours. :3
Hi! I got my marimos a few days ago and today i saw two little white worm on them! What do i do are they harmful?? I got my marimo from a loacal fishstore and they are in jar.
Hello! Fish/pet stores usually lack the care for these precious Marimos so they sometimes have worms. Just remove the worms when you see it. They should be harmless, just not pleasing to the eye if you're not a fan of them. In case there's more that would hatch, keep the Marimo in an isolated bowl for a couple of weeks to see if there's more. Give your Marimo a bath, see if it helps. Good Luck! :D
hey wendi... i had a question. i have marimo balls in my 46 gal fish tank and one of them have a brown spot. what should i do? i tried rotating it so that the brown spot would b on top so it could get some light but that didn't help either. it has been like that for like two months
I got mine from a vendor who doesn´t seem to take care of it well so he´s all dirty and also brown on the tips. I trimmed the brown tips because I read somewhere that its a dead part but I honestly only have tap water here. should I change the water? my only option is buying bottled mineral water. thanks!
Judith Chen If your city does add any chemicals in the water then it should be fine. Otherwise I would use bottled water for the long term health of the Marimo.
Efren Chen Although Marimos are a type of algae, but they are really not like other types. Marimo will absorb anything that's in your water. It depends on how dirty the water is and how long Marimo has lived in it -- the water can affect the health of your Marimo.
