    Don't sweat it! People always have a reason to being critical, but they very rarely put in the effort to do it themselves. These overconsumers and under producers are why perfect tomatoes exist, why we throw out over 30% of the food we buy, why a little sand in a marimo results in a 2 star rating. I mean I could go on and on but at the end of the day it is important to realize that you can only do your best, and to beat yourself up for some expectation someone had is just silly. Brush it off and smile.

      +MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living Thank you Luke! Some of us don't have understanding how food is grown. I often pick the strangest, "ugliest" looking fruits when I buy because they usually are the ones that end up tasting the best! Fruits, plants, nature is not grown in a mold and by a machine. They are all unique. It's actually scary to me when I see fruits at market all looking so "perfect" and identical. Those poor imperfect fruits go right to the dumpster...I hope by showing them how things are grown, they will gain more understanding and appreciation for actually naturally grown things.

      So true... I remember taking a nearly dead looking banana out of the freezer and it was much better than artificial, sneaky ice cream. Same thing with passion fruit, the wrinkliest and most purplish brown fruit is always the most juicy and sweet! Can't wait for my peppers and pumpkin to harvest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I ordered marimo from your store one time, there was sand in it but I thought that was normal. Just like you said, it's like getting sand in your hair when being at the beach. Since the marimo was a little brown I didn't criticize (probably from being in the dark mail box too long; so it's not the seller's fault) but thought it's all up to me to make it nice and green again. I had fun making my marimo healthy again, it's name is Taka (like Takahiro from One Ok Rock). I love my marimo. Thank you for making the marimo videos, I find them very helpful.

      +Kibou Hibi The odds to finding a "100% perfect" Marimo is very difficult. They are not like regular plants that you can train and perfect, like Bonsai. A little brown, or a deeper shade of green are normal. You can lightly trim around those area to promote new growth. Much like a plant that lives in soil, there are new and old leaves. Not all leaves have the same shade of green, and some may have a bit of yellow or brown. Plants that grow in water is even more difficult. They get shaded by others and gets moved by water so lighting they get ranges. That's why it's important to physically move them around at times to help with even lighting. Thank you for not being judgmental. We should appreciate nature the way they are. :)

      if your moss ball is brown then give it a vacation which means put it in a different container and put it into the fridge overnight it should get rid of most brown bits and make it a darker green

    Rofl!!! Being that upset over finding sand in a plant that lives in water that naturally has sand is craziness!. They already had unrealistic dreams of having this perfect moss ball that has never touched anything but filtered water it's whole life. Evidently if sand and other things are in the plant every time you buy it, it must be normal for it to be there. Maybe read some books and articles on it, if you're completely clueless on the subject. Talk about being severely uneducated about the plant they were buying. -_-. And to give you a bad review because they didn't bother to do research is completely wrong on all counts. Great video Wen!! Keep them coming ! :3.

    • @wendiland

      +Ghrimvixon I know as a consumer, one might feel cheated if the item arrived not meeting his/her expectations. It's totally ok for Marimo admirers to not be knowledgeable about plants, that's why I'm here, to answer questions and help in anyway I can. Hopefully in the future, people will come to me first, instead of making assumptions which may end up scaring themselves and getting upset.

    So a ball of algae that rolls around on the bottom of lakes isn't supposed to have sand in it? I'm sure it got used to that a long time ago. Unlike the sand in that persons add.

    I'm so glad I watched this video and read some of the comments below. I have been researching marimo balls and am excited about what I've read about their benefits to fish tanks. I just ordered some from amazon from what sounded like a reputable seller (who had 90% 5-star reviews out of almost 3,000 reviews). Of course, I started reading the 10% negative reviews (duh) and began to become concerned about all the things that COULD go wrong with them. People complained about the balls falling apart, being diseased, dying within a couple of weeks, killing their fish, etc. I am well aware that some people just have to complain, others don't do enough research and so their own errors cause these things, etc. But still, I began to wonder if I was doing the right thing.
    I am cycling a new 20 gallon fish tank. All the decor in it is plastic plants and rocks. I really wanted to add some live plants, but have never had much of a green thumb and have not had success with them in the past. So I thought if I add these balls to the tank, I would get all the benefits of live plants without too much hassle. The tank has been cycling for about a week and I plan to add the marimo balls to it after they arrive in about a week and leave them in the tank for a week or so before adding fish. Question to any aquarists out there who are reading this: do you think this is a good idea? (BTW I just subscribed to Wendi's channel).

    I was more horrified by the photo of the poor torn apart Marimo more than I was about the sand inside. Who would get a moss ball and their first thought is to rip it apart??? Thankfully you said it doesn't hurt them but still! It's like buying a pillow and immediately taking all the stuffing out or something.

      +tjdell480 I'm happy to hear that Marimo brings you Zen. "Perfectly" grown Marimos are hard to fine, most of them grow more loosely. Marimos are not regular plants that you can just train it to grow faster or in a certain way. In my opinion, if we appreciate things the way they are, we'd be a lot happier people in general. Sending Zen your way!

      Marimos work well with lots of aquatic creatures, but some like larger gold fish do like to eat them so it's not really a great pairing. Betta I assume is good with them since Betta enjoys them. They often snuggle or push the ball to play! Also, Betta cannot live with another mate so Marimo makes a good companion.

      Jay Blue i believe it's more of a marketing thing lol . but is great for any fish and I would think a beta especially because it's a nice small plant and wouldn't get in their way (as betas generally have small tanks) and it is also soft; betas like that bc they can rest on them and softer plant reduces stress (compared to edgey plastic plants) unless you have fake silk plants!

    I do not have a Marimo yet.... but I have been watching your videos to learn as much as possible before I make a purchase and I am encouraging my son to make a purchase of one as well. (a purchase from YOU)
    As for this video.... some people are NEVER satisfied! First it is a natural life form of sorts. It comes from nature, it is alive and a part of life. Life is dirty sometimes :) A little sand, rocks, etc would never freak me out in any way at all, it is all part of nature. I would see it as a nice life surprise :)
    Thank you so much for all your videos regarding the Marimo, they are extremely informative.
    I think caring for one of these little bits of nature will be a very Zen experience. I say caring for, not owning, because you never really own nature, I like the idea of "Adopting" a Marimo, providing care for a Marimo, giving a Marimo a home, this is not ownership just because you made a purchase as that "complainer" obviously likes to think of a piece of nature as ownership and expects that factory produced GMO perfection that is actually killing us all, people and the natural world around us.
    Thanks again for your videos :)

      +Regina Perry Thank you Regina for your support! Nature and like all things, when we bring it into our home, we are creating a 'relationship' with them. It is partnership, and balance. In today's society, many of us are far removed from nature. That's why I make videos -- to show how beautiful nature can be and to be with. Best of luck to you and your family!

    My large (golf ball sized) marimo had a crack in it which caused the marimo to start growing from within. Afraid that it would destroy my only large marimo, I pulled the fluff bits out, rolled it and it seems to have fixed that problem for now so I can enjoy it's size much longer. The funny part is I found sand in mine, all I could think about was stories of bug eggs in marimo (just from random talk on the internet when researching marimo) but the good thing is I was able to make several very tiny marimo from the fluff I removed.

    Hi wendi, 3 days ago i purchased 2 marimos from petsmart & both have white(ish)/semi-transparent beads on them. I didn't notice them upon purchasing but i do now.. Day 1; I gently washed both, putting them into separate glass jars several feet away from my window that receives medium/indirect light. Day 2; I placed one marimo into my Bettas' 2 gal tank. The water has not been murky in either tank & despite one being alone/one being with my betta fish; both marimo have these little beads in them. I cannot tell if it is bad or normal... it does not look like shrimp or sand. I picked as much off as i can but the beads are kind of hard when i got them off with tweezers. Please HELP! Thank you in advance for any response or tips!

      Kaleigh Munsterman A bit late to reply sorry, but are you sure it is a real marimo ball and not a cheaper polystyrene ball covered in java moss? (Usually just called a moss ball.) You may have been scammed. Could the white beads be polystyrene? Should not be a huge issue if it is java moss but it will grow faster and does not have the same properties. x

    I've had my Marimo ball for at about two and a half years, and he's only about 3.5 centimetres in diameter (the same size I bought him, at). I know they're slow-growing, but since I bought mine from a pet store, I was afraid it might be fake, so I tried to check and ended up tearing a rip in my Marimo (I know, stupid move. But on the bright side, I know he's real for sure now). So now I have him tied together loosely with some sewing string, since it won't keep its shape otherwise. But I'm worried that I won't help it heal properly and I have a few questions.
    How long should it take for my marimo to re-adhere to itself in the torn area? Also, when I ripped it, I saw that my Marimo is hollow inside and had some grey gunk in there. I removed some of the grey gunk as best as I could without making the rip bigger, but now I'm worried that that means my marimo is dying or has some kind of problem. Currently, I have him in a bowl of cold filtered water with a dash of plant fertilizer in the water (to hopefully help him speed up the healing process). Is there anything else I can do? Is my marimo okay? Another thing that has me worried is that my marimo used to sink to the bottom of his bowl, but now it is floating at the top of the water (even after a day of waiting for it to sink). I appreciate any advice you can give me!

    Don't know how they expect it to grow without some sort of substrate. Found fish remains in one. Thought it was fine because it was a source of nutrients. My only concern is a foreign microbe being introduced by an asymptomatic carrier.

    Hi there i like your video very much. I have a question so when you buy them how come you get them dry when or if you order on line? I think my fish store has them and they are in water with the fish but i never really paid any attention to them. They are from Japan the people that own the fish store so going back to when you buy them on line they are drying is that a good thing? Thank you for your time

    I'm surprised someone complained about the sand. To me that confirms they are natural. I'd rather have some sand in the centre than polystyrene wrapped in java moss. xD Such a non issue, but an interesting and well dealt with video.

    tiny brown bumps on marimo, then it split in half, the inside had a ton of the brown/gray blotches and smeeled like rot. i tied the to halves together with wool yarn, did i do okay?

    • @wendiland
      @wendiland  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Frankie Frankie The brown/gray hair should be removed before rolling back up. Wool yarn should be fine. I like that you are using a natural material. As Marimo grows, the wool should slowly dissolve or disappear into the interior of the Marimo.

      Those are burn spots. You can carefully trim them off and try to keep it out of direct sunlight. I keep mine in my bedroom on my table away from the window. Good luck

    • @wendiland
      @wendiland  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +liv If tips of hair are white you can lightly trim them like ilma9609 mentioned. South facing window may be too strong of sun if you live in warm climate. Marimo can be placed anywhere in a room with window, does not have to be very close to it. Good luck!

    • @Idgixgxjgx
      @Idgixgxjgx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jmm226 the entire video she explained that particles from the environment where the ball came from will end up in your tank. harmless things like sand and shells but also including things like pest snails and diseases. you dont want to introduce harmful things to your tank that could kill your fish so before just throwing live plants into your tank you should be aware of the things they carry. and you should clean them really well.

    Hello Wendi! You seem to know a lot about Marimos, so I figured I'd come to you with a concern I had. I recently purchased a Marimo from my local pet store and I've noticed that it's a pretty dark green color compared to a lot of the Marimos that I've seen. I've only seen about one or two pictures of a Marimo as dark as mine. Is this normal? Is there anything I should do to bring the color up a few shades? Thank you!

    • @wendiland
      @wendiland  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bella Carmin Hi Bella, Is your Marimo a deep forest green? As long as it's not brown, you can most likely get more true green by setting it in brighter, but cool place. It gets more deep green when it's in darker place.

    • @bellacarminati6510
      @bellacarminati6510 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's a deep forest green. The shelf it's container was on at the pet store was pretty dark too, I will try moving it into a brighter setting! How long do you think it will take for the color to shift? Thank you so much!

    • @wendiland
      @wendiland  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      All varies as every house, lighting is different. I would give it a few months. Sometimes there's lack of care at a larger store since they have so many products. Most things are brought in and left there until gets sold. Give it time. Plants don't react to change that quickly. :)
