    Great film Tom, as always full of detail and you hit the areas no one else on TH-cam does. The sound was absolutely excellent. I really liked how you filmed from
    Inside the tent and into the tent. I really felt as if I was inside the tent as you were reviewing it. Thanks for the hard work in creating the review. If I was picking one, I’d go for the Saitaris 😀.

      Hi Phil, thank you for the positive comments and I hope that I showcased the tents in their best light. The sunset beat me when filming on the coast so missed some fab shots of the Saitaris. The Saitaris is probably my favourite tent of all time but I would just need a few extra bodies or dogs to justify one... When you are inside it there is such a wow factor... I so appreciate you allowing me to borrow it. ATB Tom

    Tom, another great video from THAdv and I detect that your audio has made another small improvement. Your work as a professional media artist really pays off in audience benefit. Thank you.
    .
    You’ve explained these products well and like you I’d like to be presented with the Hilleberg, but the cost difference is fairly enormous, £850 vs £1,860, and I’d purchase the Mountain Hardware and enjoy it.
    .
    Given the Hilleberg and bearing in mind I’ve owned a Nammatj 3GT and a Keron 4, I think I’d use what you call the “back door” as the main dry entrance and the vestibule for a kitchen, luggage storage or even bicycle locker, thereby requiring only occasional access through the side door. One reason for that is that the side door goes beyond the vertical and allows rain to fall straight inside the vestibule and soak the floor. Great work Tom, ATB.

      Thank you very much Gary for your continued support and comments. I will keep working on the audio as I think I can still get it better... Some of the best and most comprehensive TH-cam gear reviews going - congratulations and thanks so much for such honest, real world reviews. I'm more motorcycle and car based camping than backpacking, and my two favourite 'adventure' tents would be the Saitaris by Hilleberg, and a Safir 9 by Tentipi. A great comparison of the Mountain Hardwear and Hilleberg tents. It seems the bottom line is which tent will meet your specific needs best. An expedtion might justify a more expensive Saiteris tent as a safty issue, but I think most hardcore backpackers would find the Trango 4 a more than adequate 4 season shelter and a better value. You are comparing two tents. One costs twice as much as the other. What a surprise!! The more expensive one gets your approval. More benefit to subscribers would have been tents in a similar price range. Very comprehensive review though. Thanks for taking the time.

      @TOMHEANEY100  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great feedback and you are right about one being twice the cost of the other and to through a ? over the comparison. I am a very small content creator and tents are hard to come by so honestly I have to work with what I can get my hands on. Both are the same capacity and designed for similar use. I did even recommend two alternatives at different price points.... A lot of Hilleberg tents are twice the money of their competitors so does that mean that they should never be compared.... I hope this reply did not sound too cheeky and I appreciate your constructive comments. ATB Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 Good points Tom. I am just pissed that I will now have to spend about £1800 instead of £1000. @@madcat1007 Hi thanks for your follow up. Sorry to hear that you had your tent destroyed. I hope it is repairable at not too much cost. I borrowed the Saitaris but its not a good idea to take borrowed tents out in extreme conditions so haven't really tested it. I noticed that it is very aerodynamic and when the poles are guyed out they are extremely rigid and strong when pushing against them. Not really a true test but it gives you some indication of how well the tent will hold its shape in high winds. So having very strong poles, a super effective guying system, an aerodynamic profile, super strong fabrics and 7 pole crossing points I feel it is hard to beat for high winds. Yeah the expense is crazy but It is the most impressive tent I have ever got my mitts on.... I hope this helps. ATB Tom

    Brilliant review, thanks. I'm a committed Hilleberg fan. It's always justifiable to spend extra on your tent-it's your last refuge in conditions that might otherwise be anything from uncomfortable to fatal. Why scrimp?

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jonathan, firstly let me thank you so very much for the coffee its really appreciated and helps justify the time spent making these videos. The Mountain Hardwear Trango 4 is a good tent but its blown away here by the quality, strength and design of the Hilleberg even at twice the price.... Looking at the two tents side by side you can see where Mountain Hardwear cut corners such as guy lines, pegs, floor thickness and fly sheet. If this is easy to find then perhaps there are other areas too where quality is not as good as it should be. The tent is your shelter when it kicks off weather wise and you want to stack the odds in your favour. I have handled many many tents over the years from decent brands and the quality has definitely reduced. However the 6 Hillebergs that I have tested all have had perfect quality and construction and you know that they can be trusted. ATB and thank you once again. Tom

    Nice work! It would be good to do a time lapse on pitching these tents because for people like me, the quickness and ease of pitching is incredibly important. Also, I must add that Hilleberg has 3 layers of silicone. This is from their website regarding tear strength: "Our Kerlon fabrics are coated, on both sides, with a total of three layers of 100 percent silicone."

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thank you for your comments, especially on the detail. This means that you have watched and listened to what I say and this is obviously what I want when I make the film. Regarding the time-lapse on pitching - the issue that I have with doing it in future videos is that most viewers skip those bits on the fast forward. I can see this from TH-cam analytics so I am not overly keen on making an effort to do this when the majority of watchers skip it. I am however seriously considering doing separate pitching videos for the tents as stand alone films so thank you for your interest. When I say "double silicone coated fabric" I mean the fact that its coated on both sides (double) with silicone and am not referring to how many layers it has on each side. I agree and you are totally right that the way I explained it in the video is a bit confusing. ATB Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 I know a number of people can't be bothered to watch how to pitch a tent. A couple of days ago, I was asked to help pitch another brand's tent because of my "expertise" which really applies to only Hilleberg tents. I didn't enjoy setting up this non-HIlleberg tent. Nor did I want to be a killjoy for the tent owner who was impressed with a 4-season tent he got on sale which he said could go to Denali or Everest. As far as I was concerned, frostbite would have set in for me if it were snowing. If I'm ever asked to pitch another tent again, I'm going to force the owner to watch the related pitching video.

    Hello
    Ten years ago I bought my Saitaris and never regretted it.
    The Saitaris is a 3 person tent (don't know why they advertise it as a 4 person tent), I use it as a one person tent and that works well.
    Would like to see a review video with the putting up of the tents in conditions like in your intro.
    The saitaris I can put up alone in any weather and wind (that I will still sleep in), can't imagine how such a big flysheet is put on a "innerfirst tent" and how the inner tent stands during that time without lines.
    Good video

In reality I have to borrow tents for many of my reviews and don't want to risk damage to other peoples tents if the winds are like my intro video...This is also a timing issue eg borrowing the tents when it is windy.. Hi Chris, thanks for watching and commenting.. Personally I love a yellow inner and find the white fabric just marks and shows dirt too easily.. But colour choice is very personal. Not doubt at all that for 4 people spending time in the tent then the Trango definitely offers more space in every aspect... It just depends on what priorities you have. Both tents are very good with certain strengths and weaknesses... ATB Tom

    Do you know if Hilleberg is the only tent maker that has a fancy stitching process so that you don’t ever need to seam seal them? I’m torn between a Hilleberg and the Nortent Gamme 8, and the only thing pulling me away from the Gamme is the need to seam seal (not totally from laziness, more so that I do not have a steady hand and I would probably do a horribly sloppy & messy job). Not to mention the need to do follow up seam sealings in the future too.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's all quite tricky.. Because Hilleberg fly sheets are coated on both sides with silicone then it's hard to get tape to stick to seam seal.. But in seriously heavy prolonged rain you might get some water ingress. Hilleberg don't like taped seams as over time the tape will most likely fail.. Nylon coated on one side only can accept tape sealing but its not as strong.. So I definitely prefer double silicone fly material even if it needs extra personal seam sealing. I have done it with 6 or 7 older North Face tents when they used double silicone coatings. There will always be pros and cons to every system. Just take your time if you have to do it and a bit of extra seam sealer here and there will not effect the function of the tent or actually be that noticeable... I hope this helps... Tom

    the reason such companies like mh choose 70d sil/pu fabric is because it has much better uv resistance compared to silnylon hence the term base camp tents.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi thank you for your comments. I do not have any direct experience with them but I do like Slingfin tents. On the portal the fabrics are very light. For example the groundsheet is 20 denier. On this Hilleberg here it is 100 denier and even on Hilleberg yellow label tents it is 50 denier if you get what I mean. Super thin fabrics are very prone to accidental damage and lack durability. Regarding the Crossbow 2 its a bit the same so I would definitely use it with a footprint. Using super light fabrics reduces the weight and helps sell tents.....ATB Tom

    Hello, I love your channel and I follow from Latin America, the only thing I think I want to argue is that in your videos and comparisons where you favor Hilleberg a lot and it feels as if the videos were paid for by the brand and your are talking about two tents twice the cost one of the other. Mountain Hadwear and The North Face have the throne of what is referred to as true mountaineering, otherwise in the 8000m mountains you would see some Hilleberg tents and they hardly ever use them. Hilleberg is an excellent brand but more than that it is fashion, some Black Label tents are used in expeditions and have all the respect they deserve but you cannot compare such different things either, as a consumer if they give me a choice of these two tents I would buy 2 mountain harwear of the same with the same money and I go anywhere. It is not about favoring anyone, you have a nice channel and I will continue following you, but there is an excess of fanaticism for said brand. This video helps me to take the decision to go for MH Trango 2 and can´t wait to buy it tomorrow. Greetings and blessings

      Hi Victor thank you for this very well written comment. Honestly I don't know where to start regarding a reply but here goes. You talk about me favouring Hilleberg but yet at the end of this video I state that I don't know which one I would choose in the real world which has to look at the consumer cost.. Additionally I recommended two other tents from different brands. Not too many TH-camrs do that... The truth is that I resisted Hilleberg tents for many years due to the fact many years ago North FACE for example used the same fabrics and poles and were much better value. Now North Face now use cheaper fabrics to reduce the cost although the construction and reinforcement is very good. The other reality here is that Hilleberg have a massive range of tents at any given weight. How many North Face or Mountain Hardwear tents are available at 3kg for example? I have used tents from many many brands such as The North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Terra Nova Equipment, Crux etc and handled many others as I worked in the retail end of the industry for 4 years. The only tent brand now that doesn't cost cut is Hilleberg pretty much and this I admit comes at a premium price as the products are made in the Eu not the Far East where labour is much cheaper... Regarding the tents that are used at 8000m etc most of these are sponsored (More American expeditions) and being erected by porters (many people). Just try putting up a Tango is heavy rain and high winds....
      I have had two Tangos in the past both of which served me very well (and yours will do too) but there inner first pitch is not for me in UK Conditions.
      Hilleberg Black Label tents also use 100 d fabrics on the groundsheet which few other if any manufactures do. I have had many punctured North Face 70d groundsheets. Most companies favour light weight over durability as light weight sells tents...
      So for me I want to support a brand that doesn't cut costs, probably makes less money on their products due to production labour costs, has fantastic customer support where you still can contact the CEO, has a insane range of products, and where there products hold their value so well you can sell them for more money second hand than you paid to begin with.
      My TH-cam Chanel doesn't do great with views, partly due to my very focused niche content but at least when I review a Hilleberg product it is with passion and my true belief in the brand that has served me personally so well....
      ATB and I honestly wish you very well with the Trango. It is a great tent with a fantastic reputation... Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 Thanks for your answer Tom, Hilleberg is a fabulous brand and as you mention because of their high costs they don't skimp on putting the best quality in their products. Suddenly a better comparison for this tent can be expedition tents like: Lofoten X-trem 3 Camp, Himalaya X-Trem 2, Fjellheimen X-Trem 4 Camp, Patagonia 3, Svalbard High 3 Camp, Spitsbergen X-Trem 4 Camp, etc. Most youtubers try to sell everything as good even when it is not and they are not always honest. With what you say now I understand why you speak so passionately about the brand. I love camping tents and I am always trying to buy one more to collect and just because I like it. Right now I want to continue discovering more and get some of the best that each manufacturer can have for that experience, then share that beautiful knowledge with more people just like you. Go ahead with your channel and if you can try to use other brands so that the community continues growing,. There is an American brand called Kuiu that has a great model called Storm Star, it´s light, 4 seasons and with great qualities that I even want to buy. I already ordered a Hilleberg Keron 4Gt tent to see the best of HILL BL and I hope to buy an Akto or Enan to collect them and see their quality too. Greetings from South America

      @@victorhugo6885 hey great and interesting reply and I wish you the very best with all your new tent purchases. You are totally right about the good reviews gear gets from content creators on TH-cam. the reality is is that if you are sponsored you don't want to say too much too bad, I f you have bought the item then you already think its good, and if you borrow it then you don't want to say too much bad about someonelses pride and joy.... Have a look at my latest review on the MSR Access 2 and let me know your thoughts... Also regarding the tent comparison the tents you mention would be more suited but I have no way of sourcing these tents so I have to work with what I have. Hilleberg have turned me down twice regarding sponsorship (stock issues) which is disappointing but after now having my hands on at least 10 of their tents I still prefer them to any others for my particular needs. I have also had the offer of two more Hillebergs to review so this has a bit of momentum for me... I hope you are well south in South America ha ha... ATB Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 Thanks Tom, yes I reviewed your video of the Msr access 2 tent the other day. I wanted to buy that tent for a long time but after reviewing a lot of information I am not convinced that it really is a tent suitable for strong weather or snow. For me, the worst fault of this tent is the structure that incorporates a star-shaped plastic that holds the rods. In very windy weather the entire structure can easily collapse because these plastics run the risk of failing. A 4-season tent needs solid structures that cross from one end to the other doing their own individual work. Kuiu storm star 2 meets all those requirements and has better materials aslo price, the problem is that they are out of stock at the moment. The tents that the subscribers lend for the comparisons must be subject to 100% frank technical reviews and no claims or crying are accepted afterwards. I had an opinion regarding Hilleberg that I wanted to tell you and see what think about. For me Hilleberg is a great brand but also that they have remained very much in the past and have not updated their materials much, what I am trying to say is that in the past the tents were very robust because they only had heavy materials, each time manufacturers are looking for stronger and lighter materials, but Hillberg stayed in that past, which at the same time has resulted in its MARKET NICH. There are old tents that work until now and have been manufactured for 20 years or more, which could practically also be considered better than the ones we have now, but also to much heavier and with problems of condensation mostly caused by the materials used (breathability) and also lack of vents. Looking at many brands that manufacture expedition tents, I see that they are again using polyester and some polymer blends because Nylon loses its elasticity with water and users must continually readjust the guidelines, and that gets complicated in extreme climates. In addition, the very robust material such as the Yellow Lb and Red Label tents that are provided with 4-season tent materials is why I suppose the problem of the great increase in condensation they have. I respect the brand and soon I will have own Hilleberg tents, I only would like they to continue innovating in new materials lighter but just as resistant to carry in small backpacks. Have great day Tom!

My last Mountain Hardwear tent was a Tangent 2 which they now have stopped making... While the construction was good pegs and guy lines were really poor for a top end tent. Even many of the cheap brands are using dyneema guy lines while MHW are still cutting costs with standard nylon.. But this is still a tough one as Hilleberg tents are getting pricier and pricier and they lack some detail as they kind of dont make many changes or updates because they dont have to.. Customer service though is amazing as they still are a family run business.... ATB Tom

    Double silicone coated tents (Hille) sag like hell in rain and you have to go outside and get soaked to tighten everything up. If its sunny in the morning the tent is tighter than . . . which stretches the untaped seams and the needle holes get big enough to leak. The Tango suffers from none of this. Had a Hille once and it was the worst tent I ever had. People pay so much money for them they convince themselves they are great. Buyer beware.

    Mountain Hardwear is garbage since Columbia bought them. The quality of the materials is so grossly obvious doing a side by side. There is no reason it should weight more than 13 pounds. You mentioned SlingFin, the original tent designer co-founded Mountain Hardwear with the sleeping bag designer of the North Face. He founded SlingFin after selling Mountain Hardwear and it shows now in the quality. I don't have much respect for the name anymore because the money spent on advertising is the only thing planting those tents all over Everest Basecamp and onto Barnes and Noble shelves in the magazines.

      Hi Clem, I like your input here thank you. I owned a Trango 2 many years ago and was impressed with it so I bought another one. It was ok but not much of an update on the original. As the Trango's are heavy for one I then thought to try the Tangent 2. This tent immediately disappointed me. Meant to be a premium product the guy lines were cheap and nasty and the cheap pegs bent at he neck the first time I hit them with a stone. I hate cost cutting on premium products and that's where Hilleberg never disappoint. Fabrics, poles, construction, built quality, guy lines, pole bags and cord etc. Some people will always have a fault with everything but I now have handled 6 or 7 Hillebergs and not a single construction or quality fault anywhere. In reality Many many years ago TNF and Mountain Hardwear were very good but they have suffered due to mass production and of course cost cutting. Some people look at them on expeditions and thing great, that's good enough for me but as you say these are sponsored. The people using them probably are not that interested in camping, just bagging a summit. This Trango 4 was ok regarding quality but again cheap pegs and guy lines on a premium product...... no thank you. the 70 d fly super heavy but I suppose good uv resistance and not bad value either. The Saitaris here was the most impressive tent I have had my hands on so far. Would like to see a SlingFin Hard shell but I think they have a 30d fly against the 40 of the Hilleberg and they run their groundsheets quite thin too.... You made an effort to give a detailed comment so that's your detailed reply. Great to have you on board with the channel. Happy camping Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 Thank you for taking the time to respond. It means a lot to me. I owned my first expedition tent from Sierra Designs just after Mountain Hardwear came to be and at 8 pounds 5 ounces for a 3 person single door tent it was ideal with the igloo vestibule with (believe it or not) two poles for the vestibule alone and the two stove pipe vents. I didn't understand how the weight just kept going up and up in these tents. I inherited a Trango 4 after I bought my Nallo 2 from Hilleberg and couldn't believe the difference in quality. Moreover I don't see why more companies aren't building tents with the integrates tent body. It's nice to see NEMO Equipment trying it but unfortunately people are complaining that their 20D and 30D tent materials aren't holding up.
