  • During a trip to what director Christian Petzold calls our “city of movies,” the director of AFIRE talked about the jazzy qualities of Steven Soderbergh’s films, the inspiration he has taken from Preston Sturges, and an overpoweringly erotic moment in STROMBOLI.

Wonderful filmmaker. His use of silence and sound is astonishing at times. I'd buy a collection of Christian Petzold film in a heartbeat.

Seems like one of the major signs of a great filmmaker... the ability to use silence and sound to enrapture an audience.

I completely agree. Artists that can do that have my attention. Bresson was the same.@@Jimmy1982Playlists

Me too!!! That is the Criterion box set I have been dreaming about all year. Everything. In chronological order. With two commentary tracks from him for each film.

I took it more as a signifier of how his curiosity and enthusiasm is endless, matched only by his generosity to engage in real dialog, and his awareness that nothing can ever be nailed down in black and white. To have chosen any one moment as the last moment would ring false. You will never get just one thing from him all tied up in a bow.

Have only seen _Phoenix_ among his filmography and it's absolutely *masterful!* One of the great endings of any 21st Century film... perhaps any film ever.
Thank you for the CC for putting me on to the film! That was an immediate purchase.

I saw Barbara, Phoenix, and Yella several years ago, loved them, but didn’t realize they were all from the same film maker. Last week saw Afire then finally looked up his filmography. Since then watched Transit, Undine, and Wolfsburg. Needless to say, I'm now a huge fan of his work.

I want a Petzold commentary track on all of my discs. Every film. An abstract thinker who feels and for whom everything is contingent and emerging from lived life, a formalist for whom everything is human emotional meaning. Never reductive, always opening outward and expanding. So much love. So much humanity. And so funny.

Just discovered Petzold at the beginning of the year .I love his work and in my opinion one of the best directors in the world at the moment.I know he has some detractors but they are wrong 😅
    Nice choices too!

From his movies I expected Mr. Petzold to be a sadder/darker man. He seems very cheerful. Really liked this. And also really like his movies. And Nina Hoss. Would like to see another film from him with her as the leading actress.
