My first and probably my favourite tool song. I was 14 when I got shown this by one of my classmates and I remember being sorta uncertain about it but decided to download it anyway. The song sat on my phone for weeks before it ended up coming up on my shuffle playlist one time when I'd gone out for a walk. All I remember was sparking up a spliff as the lost keys/blame hoffman part was playing and sitting down not long after in order to better soak up the complexity of the song's progression. After getting back home, I spent the evening downloading every single tool song I could find. However, despite loving the band and their songs I have never been able to recapture the magic of just sitting down on a grassy bank and hearing rosetta stoned play for the first time, something which I would give anything to experience again.
My first time was my Indian metal buddy shared it to me one night and I can remember running round the house rocking out for a straight 6hours until the sun came up again all night long. So great 😁 would give anything to hear it like that again. Worth more than a lot of things I can say -been trying to get my local national radio station to play it at prime time if I can get in - to open many minds to its awesomeness one day
8:38 Is just so good it's unbelievable, it's almost entirely out of place musically with how melodic it is, and yet not only do they fit it in, they then seamlessly revert back to the previous more gritty style, despite the extreme contrast of these styles it fits together so cohesively. Then there's the lyrics. It captures so very well that state of being really high where every irrelevant thought is like an epiphany. It once occurred to me on drugs that I could solve world hunger using the moon, in that moment I was so sure that I had solved it. I HAD to tell someone about this so I approached a friend to tell him (literally 30 seconds later), and I had forgotten entirely what I wanted to tell him so urgently so instead, winging it, I told him about my plan to get a full time job as a clock. Though I think the lyrics are inspired by a more hallucinogenic experience than mine.
The passage from 8:38 to 9:16 is for me the best moment in a tool song and surely one of the best in rock music in general. This is the apogee, the final climax where the message is revealed but the narrator "forgets his pen". I'm feeling like the entire song is preparing the listener to this special moment since the beginning, especially the instrumental part just before with the groovy bass part and the destroyed guitar solo which create a very serious atmosphere, the suspens is at its peak. Tool's musicians create deeper and deeper atmospheres and moods that fit with the narrator's story, the tension finally peaks with the last instrumental part. By that point, the listener is totally focused on what Maynard is gonna say, the Rosetta Stone and the fate of humanity will finally be soon revealed. What follows after that is one of the most mind-blowing thing I've ever heard, sadenly the narrator forgot his pen when the message was delivered by UFOs... "Shit the bed again... typical." Well said, Maynard. Just excuse my English guys but I just wanted to point out the musical genusiness and the song writings skills of these guys. The first time I listened to that, I just cried at that moment because it made (and still makes) me feel something I can't really explain, a special feeling related to the pure beauty and the greatness of our humanity filled with a feeling of pure hopeness for it and our future. I love Tool so much since so many years, their discography is flawless and legendary, 10000 days is for me a rock masterpiece that will never be matched in its kind.

the relationship between the drums n bass on this mystify me ... our drummer (we had a couple over time ) was either too clockwork or too distracted respectively to catch the minute timings ... also my bass never got turned up loud enough ...although i believe thats now a bass trope lol...not that we ever got to play anything close to this level of awesome TLDR ... fuck yeah !!!
I'm a disabled veteran and was prescribed oxycontin for 9+ years by the VA... This song epitomizes the cleansing and withdrawal I went through... 5 years clean now... For God's sake don't ever fall into that trap... If you do, get help sooner than later...
An interesting parallel, I think. The lyrics were what was written down by MJK during his first trip on DMT, hence the talk about the pen. I find it interesting, seeing the similarities between DMT, and the side effects and withdrawal symptoms of Opiates. Cool share. :)

@@j.t.8848 There were people shitting on Lateralus would you believe. "Not as heavy as previous stuff. " or "Ticks and Leeches doesn't fit". "Lateralus, over produced". Haha. Honestly, I didn't like Fear Inoculum at first. I couldn't listen to the chrous - it just didn't resonate with me at all. I found it annoying to the point of just wanting to skip that "expel" part. After a solid 100 listens, now I love the song. Typical.
I love this album but it sounds like shit. Its so overblown and distorted. Lateralus was much cleaner and dynamic but a bit thin and bright. So far fear innoculum has the best mixing style.
For ambient electronica, same goes for the most recent Boards of Canada album, Tomorrow's Harvest. Everyone including myself, could barely understand it and panned it when it came out. Now, it's heralded among their best. I actually don't feel that 10,000 Days nor potentially Fear Inoculum are among Tool's "best" but they're still killer albums that I can greatly enjoy. Lateralus will always be the #1 sweet spot for me.
A tragicomic portrait of a character who takes themselves too seriously and yet is a total joke, expressed in a joke song which is presented with all the grandeur and musicianship that prog metal is capable of. A portrayal of the dangers of trying to find truth in the psychedelic experience without the critical thinking and introspection that is always required to find any kind of truth. Truly a message of hope for those who choose to hear it, and warning for those who do not. A fuckin' masterpiece.
It's just as one Canadian professor once said with a voice of a frog: "Be careful of asking for unearned knowledge, the trauma might leave you too scarred to think about asking for anything ever again."
I remember when I first listened to Rosetta Stoned I was in computers class in school working on a project . I was just getting into Tool and had already listened to a fair few songs like Schism, Lateralus and The Pot. I was just going to put on some basic hip hop songs as background music and then I saw Rosetta Stoned in my recommendations. I saw the name and that it was eleven minutes long and I thought, "Oh ya this is gonna be good" . When I heard Maynard say, "Alright then, picture this if you will" followed by Adam Jone's powerful heavy guitar and Maynard 's accompanying Lyrics I literally moved back in my chair about 3 feet. I didn't do it intentionally it's as if the music forcefully pushed me back. It caught me off guard I just wasn't expecting it. The whole song was a masterpiece from beginning to end and listening to it for the 1st time was one of the best musical experiences of my life I'll never forget it. Safe to say I abandoned my project that day and when I got home I listened to Rosetta Stoned and a load of other Tool songs on repeat.

I work in mental health, and on the job I've been reminded of this song more times than I'd like to recount. In my mind this is the theme song for grandiose delusions of revelation.

The thing I love about the lyrics is that they leave open the possibility that it wasn't a bad trip. How darkly funny that aliens might come with a message of hope and a dire warning to the people of this planet and happen to pick this one particular guy as their herald, not knowing that nobody would believe him because he's a junkie and strap him down to a hospital bed while their doom approaches.

The psychedelic feeling of enlightenment is the greatest lie ever. It takes a lot of self criticism to be able to see it, but you don't really discover anything while being high. Oh, fuck, shit my pants again.
"Overwhelmed as one would be,
Placed in my position
Such a heavy burden, now
To be the one
Born to bear and read to
All the details of
Our ending,
Then write it down for
All the world to see;
But I forgot my pen,
Shit my bed again"
this piece of lyrical content is one of my absolute favorite moments in this band's discography. it makes my eyes water every time. the feeling of understanding so much about everything around you but no one listening that these words express is something i relate too painfully close to. all because i forgot my pen, i just made one little mistake and that is enough for you to invalidate everything i said, because its easier for you anyway. but i suppose i dont blame you, it really is such a heavy burden.
if youve read all this, i appreciate it. stay up.
Edit: WOOOH BOYS WE MADE IT TO THIS FINALLY BEING BACK IN THE SETLIST. PRAISE GOD!!! This tour was my first time seeing the guys live and this was definitely a highlight. man I hope I have another chance to experience it. Brilliant. I love this album.
Idk man, sounds like someone high on acid would say that.
Stay cool

Only Tool could write a song about a DMT experience with "God damn shit the bed" as some of the actual lyrics and have me think it's a masterpiece.
DMT does way different stuff depending on the song aha
Actually, the songs about the discovery of acid by Albert Hoffman in 1938. The songs supposed to be Albert Hoffman perspective of tripping for the first time. Now, imagine that, being the first person to discover acid. Scary thought.
@@ianbielawski4937 uh, this song's about Bill Manspeaker, and the UFO nuts that he did a bunch of acid with out in the desert, and they all shit themselves.
Whats the meaning of that apart from its obvious meaning. I always amused it got to do with shitting yourself because you have ETs in bedroom
@@danielxxgadd O.o Do you proof read your comments before you post them? As far as- what's the meaning besides the obvious meaning? It means the guys in Tool thought it was a fuckin' hilarious story, and Maynard made a song about it.
That bass and drum combo at 7:03 makes this song my favorite tool song of all time
Fuck ya
Just saw them on Tuesday night. Justin is an absolute animal, and they have never sounded better
Fuck yes. But the way it builds up from 6.00 onwards and then Adam comes screaming in while Justin and Danny keep it flowing is fucking smooth!
@connorshark sorry sir but you are indeed wrong. There are many different types of solos.
@Connorshark Definitely considered a solo. Justin is thumping away and Danny is doing the drummers 'job' and keeping the whole thing in time.
I love your band so much.
The way he says "Typical" just hits different! God so goooooood!
Yeah shit makes me tear up ngl
Tool has always loved trolling their fans. This is no exception. Truly one of the most epic sounding songs EVER with lyrics that are downright hysterical. LOVE THIS SONG SO DAMNED MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of TOOL's best song on this album! They need to bring it back live!

The sound of adam jones is hypnotizing. That tone wont leave my head, i hope it never leaves
Worth more than a lot of things I can say -been trying to get my local national radio station to play it at prime time if I can get in - to open many minds to its awesomeness one day
Have your first sub. Lol
Chase that dragon
For me, the song that blew my mind like that and got me into tool was invincible.
Good thing a stealth banana didn’t come down and split the sky
8:38
Is just so good it's unbelievable, it's almost entirely out of place musically with how melodic it is, and yet not only do they fit it in, they then seamlessly revert back to the previous more gritty style, despite the extreme contrast of these styles it fits together so cohesively.
Absolutely fucken genius !
This is the only band who has never been boring for me. They have something special
I mean I can't even explain how much I love this song.
Consider the following:
This song wouldn't exist if Maynard remembered his pen.
Then how did he write it?
Than there would be another one instead
He wrote it about a story his friend told him.
@@TheBlackQueen a pencil
@@imkharn i read somewhere that the friend in question was the lead singer from green jelly
This is probably Tool's most immersive song.
Absolutely
"Shit the bed again... typical."
Well said, Maynard.
@Dragon Of Dojima Same for me except when that song is playing lol. Check out vicarious and right in two if you have no hope.
@Dragon Of Dojima totally agreed but I try not caring lol

More happens in the first 4-5 mins of this masterpiece than most bands entire collection
Saw tool last night in St Paul. So glad they added this song back into their show.
i cant even describe the emotions that are evoked by the bass and drums at 7:04
the relationship between the drums n bass on this mystify me ... our drummer (we had a couple over time ) was either too clockwork or too distracted respectively to catch the minute timings ... also my bass never got turned up loud enough ...although i believe thats now a bass trope lol...not that we ever got to play anything close to this level of awesome
TLDR ... fuck yeah !!!
Wish they’d extend that like for 2 mins
Overwhelmed as one would be placed in my position

I'm a disabled veteran and was prescribed oxycontin for 9+ years by the VA... This song epitomizes the cleansing and withdrawal I went through... 5 years clean now... For God's sake don't ever fall into that trap... If you do, get help sooner than later...
An interesting parallel, I think. The lyrics were what was written down by MJK during his first trip on DMT, hence the talk about the pen.
I find it interesting, seeing the similarities between DMT, and the side effects and withdrawal symptoms of Opiates. Cool share. :)
@Jay S Opiate WD sure as fuck does not feel like DMT lol. I wish it did, the world would be a better place

It's funny how many people shit on this album when it came out...13 years later - it's probably a masterpiece. Probably.
There was a point in time where it felt like I was the only human being on earth that loved this album, it seems like people have apparently came around recently.. i remember back in the day all my friends hated it and most of the people commenting on the internet shit on it aside from a very small few. This album just keeps giving, i never get sick of it, such badassery and range of emotions, always thought provoking as fuck. Been my favorite TOOL album since day one.
Typical.
@@Masked_Official tool is always changing and ever-growing, meaning their sounds changes.
Absolutely phenomenal comment. Thank YOU for your critical thinking! A blessing to see the likes of these still floating around the spider web. ❤
It's just as one Canadian professor once said with a voice of a frog: "Be careful of asking for unearned knowledge, the trauma might leave you too scarred to think about asking for anything ever again."
If you listen closely around the 0:25 - 0:27 you’ll hear a little girl say “Hi” in between one of Maynards lines.
Heard her dude, thanks.
I thought I was the only one
Are you telling me after all these years there are still secrets on this song that I had no idea? HOLY FUCKING SHIT
Nice
Kinda creepy -- like something from a horror movie. I never noticed that before.
This song is hilarious, badass, and amazing all in one. Only Tool can pull that off
I remember when I first listened to Rosetta Stoned I was in computers class in school working on a project .
Of course
Amazing to hear something new in a song I've heard over a thousand times but with a new viewpoint...even sober
This song takes you to another world and you just have to listen to it all the way through

Of all the Tool songs I'd love to see an official video for, it's this one.
In my opinion this is the hardest Tool song, at least for guitar.
