The new Leica D-Lux 8 has received mixed reviews, with some praising its performance and design, while others find it lacking significant upgrades from its predecessor, the D-Lux 7.
    Pros:
The D-Lux 8 retains the high-quality 17-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor and the DC Vario-Summilux 10.9-34mm f/1.7-2.8 ASPH lens, ensuring excellent image quality (Shotkit) (ePHOTOzine).
It introduces new accessories like a hand grip, leather camera case, and wrist straps, enhancing usability and style (Shotkit).
The camera features improved ergonomics and a simplified interface, making it user-friendly and suitable for street photography and fast-paced shooting (Shotkit) (Engadget).
    Cons:
The D-Lux 8 does not offer significant improvements over the D-Lux 7, such as a better sensor or lens, which may disappoint those looking for major upgrades (Shotkit) (Engadget).
At close to $3000 Au$ ($1,595 US$) the camera is priced at a premium, which might be considered high given the modest enhancements compared to its predecessor (Engadget) (ePHOTOzine).
Overall, while the D-Lux 8 is a solid and stylish compact camera, its value may depend on how much you value the incremental improvements and the Leica brand's design and heritage.
If you already own the D-Lux 7 or are looking for a substantial upgrade, it might not justify the price tag.
However, for new buyers or Leica enthusiasts, it remains an attractive option.

After using two X100s, a few M6 MKIIs, a bunch of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras (including my current ‘main’ shooter, the X2D), the D-Lux 8 is exactly what I want - a quality point and shoot photo-centric camera with a zoom lens that I can take everywhere. I’m buying one. 👍

I think it's the badge that will sell it to those with AUD 3K loose change. In the UK you can buy a brand new OM5 (which agreed, has it's faults such as old menu, old USB) for AUD 1900, which also includes the 12-45mm f4.0 PRO lens. Unlike the Leica, the screen is articulated, the camera and lens are weather shielded (IP53), you can change lenses, it's small, lightweight, has a nice grip and controls, computational features, etc. etc, and most importantly, produces great image quality. In my humble opinion, there's no contest!

The OM-5 is great. Yes, I wish it had USB-C. Perhaps the mkii will bring the OM-1 processor (which will mean OM-1 menu format), USB-C and the OM-1 mkii's superb C-AF and subject detection. With the 12-45 f/4, would be an amazing combo.

While I'm not against a 3k point and shoot. But it needs a wow factor like the q3/rx1r ii. Those are full frame point and shoots. But this d-lux 8 is the same camera from 6 years ago. They only updated the software a bit. This is clearly a cash grab from Leica. This is just them trying to crash in the fuji x100vi hype by putting the bare minimum effort in.

I'm pretty sure it's for the exclusive leica shooter that wants a vacation cam. Though in USD it's about $1600 and the Fuji X100VI is the same price retail if you can find it (More if you're buying second hand) So honestly I think it's for the "cool kids" and status seekers. It's for the people that will buy something to one up their friend that got a X100VI and flaunts it and then pulls this out and says "I got a new Leica for the same price, and it has a zoom lens and 1.7 aperture". That's the person it's for. Anyone else is buying any number of other cameras new or used and getting more for their money.

It is only $1500.00 in the states. Why is it 3k in Australia. I been looking at it for a while, just saw my first comprehensive review. Would I like one, Yes, would I buy one... maybe... as an entry $1500.00 UDS, it places it self below the FujiX100 6 I own a Pentax MX-1 which is kinda close, I know the Panasonic LX100 cost 1/4 of the price now.. I think Leica make a pretty affordable camera depending on where you live..I guess...

$US1500 = $AU 2200. However, our price would include 10% GST. I presume you would have to pay federal and state taxes on top of your $1500. If $1500 is your before tax price, our $2200 would translate to $2420. The remaining $380 is the "Australia Tax". Anything from the US sold in Australia is inexplicably more expensive than in the US just because we are stranded on an island in the Pacific and can't defend ourselves.

I heard a reviewer comment that they weren't even aware mft cameras were still made but that they liked the D-lux 8 lol. It's so frustrating to see Leica (and Panasonic with the S9) gimp their compact cameras and still have consumers defend them

This is a camera for people who don't think this is "that amount of money".
Even if there is again a new Lumix LX100 with exactly the same specs but for significantly less money, the Leica will be bought by people who want this red dot. It give them this additional feeling that it is still the better camera because of some Leica magic, quality control, what ever or just because it is seen like a gem.
At the end, the feeling with the camera in your hand and your impression on others has a lot of influence on the results. For some people, it might be a good investment.

I picked up a used Panasonic LX100 mkii in the UK a few months ago and can see the appeal of the size, specs, ergonomics and multi aspect ratio sensor. It's a great camera but I don't believe Leica has done enough to update this camera for me to justify a purchase. That said, the popularity of this style of camera means the UK price of good condition used LX100II's are still in the £600-£750 price range. For those used to the Leica camera range £1500 price for the DLux 8 is probably right for the entry model.

  • @malfunkt

This camera is for people who have a larger format system and wan't a very capable compact camera for everyday carry, one that is well built with Leica infused styling, design and interface, with modern touches such as USB-C, OLED EVF. It would also be good for someone who wants a single do-it-all swiss army knife of a camera, and who is willing to pay for the aesthetic, and purposeful design. It could be argued that you are buying into the ethos of Leica, and that such simple minimalism is worth it. And their are countless romantics among photographers.
It would have been nice to see them use a bit newer M4/3 sensor, but ultimately there may not have been much difference in resultant image quality (ie. cropped 25.2MP), especially with this lens design which still has superb characteristics. "I'm not into digital zooms" yeah, honestly that is probably the only thing I'm not as keen on with this camera. Having owned the LX100 before it was never really a hinderance, but I just feel more connected and deliberate when using a manual zoom. I was also not a fan of how the camera looked when extended, I wish at least it could maintain its compact form at its widest focal length.
Although, I absolutely loved the LX100 and think the D-Lux 8 will be an awesome companion I am not its target audience. I use my cameras both part-time professionally and creatively - and that demands practicality. My now 7-year old Fujifilm X-E3 is still a better camera for me than the D-Lux 8 and for the budget-minded among us cameras like the D-Lux 8 or X100VI don't make a lot of sense.

I have been using an LX 100 since it was released almost 10 years ago. Some of the rubber bits have seen better days but otherwise it is working as well as when it was new. For me it's a handy compact camera that can do any basic photography with full control over the settings. I am on the lookout for a more modern compact camera and this Leica is somewhat tempting but the old LX100 keeps working.

I think Leica is aiming at the market that Fujifilm X100vi is selling into. V similar price in AU, yes? Leica product page states "0% hassle. 100% joy." - that's a fixed lens and not a lens-systems camera which are too fragile for many.

@@grantrobertdavies I thought the market was more competitive than Leica and Panasonic think it is. I was not expecting PDAF-less sensors in this D-Lux 8 or Pana's "new" FZ80D/FZ82D - consumers need better focusing than these products deliver

The fact that it’s sold out shows that Leica was right to tag onto the fad of expensive simple cameras (X100vi, S9, and even the Pentax 17). Enough people obviously have the money and just want the “fun“ and/or somehow validating experience. It’ll be interesting to see how long the fad lasts

  • @jpsteiner2

I would pass on the Leica. However, the first MFT camera I bought was the Panasonic LX100 mkii. That is a terrific camera! I eventually traded it for the GX-9. As far as I can tell, the LX100 is a better and cheaper choice.

    • @michaeld5888
      @michaeld5888 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

The LX100 is not a MFT camera as that is specifically a lens mount system and uses the full 4/3 sensor. This camera uses a crop of it from 2x to 2.2x. Compare the OM-5 at ISO 25,600 and the LX100 II on Dpreview and the LX is not really up to that standard. However the test does use a prime where possible and a zoom would be a better equivalent so sharpness is not really tested here. However there is more noise for sure with the Panasonic. It definitely outperforms the Sony RX100 VII though which is truly awful above ISO 3200 with colour fading and noise. The Sony short zoom version also closes aperture rapidly by 35mm equivalent against the languid close up by the LX100 up to to 50mm.

Who's it for? I'd say it's for people who like the brand for or like making a brand statement and can afford $2500 to make it. Personally it's not a camera I'd want to use.
Years ago I bought a few Leicas from people who bought them as a brand statement took a few photos and then moved on or upgraded and did not want to bother selling them online. Being Niche market cameras there was a limited local market I bought them for well below online prices, played with them and then made a little profit. Today I see those same Leicas going for 2X to almost 3X what I bought them for. But I guess money is worth about 1/2 now so they've appreciated a bit.
First Leica I bought was a an SL2 with the 24-40mm Zoom and the Leica Summicron-SL 75mm F2 which I loved. I later sold the 75mm for almost what I paid for the SL2 and both lenses, Images were nice but I later bought a Sony A7R and preferred using it and the images it produced for like 1/6th the cost.
People talk about the Leica digital camera colors but a lot of Panasonic cameras match the Leica look as in this comparison Between the Leica SL2 and the S5II. Having had Leicas I was just able to pick the Leica images from the Panasonic but the differences were almost indiscernible.
    Lumix VS Leica Colour Comparison
    th-cam.com/video/wp-N53R_OBY/w-d-xo.html
One Leica that had a particularly different image I liked was the M8 with 10MP Kodak CCD sensor, and it produces smooth, organic film-like images. (I seem to recall one of the Canon 1D and a Nikon Full frame DSLR used the same sensor).
Surprisingly, the Panasonic LX5 10mp Pocket camera with the Leica zoom and tiny Kodak sensor produces images very similar and at times nearly indistinguishable to the M8 Leica.
I still love my LX5 with the crappy plug-in EVF. And i say if you want the early Digital Leica look skip the DLUX-8 and pop $150 on the LX5 and then buy a Panasonic S5 for serious photography.

Weeeeellll...this is a tough call. I'm a compact camera lover, but this thing is a stretch. I love the design language over the Lumix version, but after all this time, and for so much money, they could have tilted the screen and given it Leica color profiles. Sooo? Nah. It wasn't that tough after all! Still lating for the GX-9 mk3.

  • @BrentODell

As a Lumix user, I'm very happy with the Leica branded lenses for micro four thirds. That said, I feel like Leica may have lost the plot. Their 'software lenses' for iPhone really feel like an odd direction for them to move, since the whole mystique of the brand is that their lenses and build quality are what you're paying for.
Edit: and to answer the question in the title- no, I would NOT pay that much for a compact, fixed lens camera. On the other hand, since the previous 'Leica' was a rebadged Lumix, maybe this is evidence we'll get some small Lumix bodies soon?

I can almost understand people who only ever wanna buy one camera, no lenses, and they want something with good specs and good build quality and a good amount of dials and buttons on the camera lusting after the fujifilm x100vi. Almost. But this? Everyone else here said it and I'm saying it too, it seems like a cheap cash-in version of that and I just don't care that much about Leica.

Leica are known for this, but they are not the only ones. There is a Fuji X100 V1 'special edition' up used on MPB UK for £3079, not sure what that translates to in AUD, but you better have deep pockets. As best I can tell the 'special edition' is the same as the standard one, but has a unique serial number engraved on the hot shoe. I would say double your money by folding it in half putting it back in your pocket;-)

Camera equivalent to a Rolex watch. Doesn't take any better pictures than a lesser price camera same as a Rolex not keeping time as well as a Bulova 262khz watch. Partly snob appeal and partly appeals to those who mistakenly think higher price means better pictures rather than talent pictures.
