Hiya Folks! Seconds from death, Varian’s life flashes before his eyes while also summarizing the conflict between Horde & Alliance, and the struggle & responsibilities of being a King. A duty that has now been passed down to his son, Anduin. (This was originally meant to be the intro & outro for my Varian Movie but I felt it was a bit jumbled so I took it out. I made a few adjustments & re-uploaded for those who’d like to see it.) Here’s the script that served as the layout: “You will be remembered as the king who sacrificed his life for nothing” “I…I was not at the Wrathgate, but the soldiers who survived told me much of what happened. Your son fought with honor. He died a hero’s death. He deserves a Hero’s burial”. (Summarizes Wrath events) “I was just a child when my father rushed to confront the same evil.” (Warlords’ First Invasion) “Are you so eager to meet Death? Look then upon the countless faces of your demise.” “The Burning Legion has returned!” (The Arrival of the Legion) “I was THERE. I LIVED it!” (Foreshadowing to Varian’s fate) “You speak only of their savagery. But surely, they are not all monsters.” (Varian contemplating Faction conflict i.e. Garrosh’s rule vs. Thrall’s rule) “There was one, Durotan (parallel between Thrall and his Father).” “But how can I succeed? Where he failed?” “But know this. If your Horde fails to uphold honor as Garrosh did. We will END you.” (Summarizes MoP climax) “I now believe as you do. That peace is the noblest aspiration.” (Varian shifts his beliefs to Anduin’s) “That mistake cost him his life. And brought this kingdom to ruin”. (Eventually costs him as he trusted his life to Sylvanas who abandoned him on the Shore. With reason, but it still cost him). “You are NOT your father.” “I go to face it. Knowing, I may not return.” (You know what happens).
Even as a Horde player I liked Varian very much, and I had sorrows after his death. He died a hero's death, for his people. And his fight in the end for me it was one of the most epic in WOW's history. I hope we'll see him on the Shadowlands.
I play both factions, but I'm Alliance at heart. Losing Varian hit me hard and remains a sorrow. It's been a surprise to me that so many horde players respected him too. That's been the major comfort to me for his loss. At least they sent him out in a blaze of glory, not like they did to Admiral Taylor.
God this line from Genn really sits differently in Shadowlands. "Your father's actions were indeed heroic. They were his challenge to us, his people to never let fear prevail...Even at the very gates of hell." Hang in there Anduin.
Personally, one of my all-time favorite kings in all of fantasy works. While at times, I wished they could've done just a bit more, I cannot complain. His story as a child who watched Stormwind burn and his father fall, growing up with Arthas as childhood friends in Lordaeron, losing his beloved wife Tiffin to the defias, then imprisoned & turned into a gladiator "Lo'gosh", returning back in Wrath to lead the Alliance against the Lich King. And Metzen did an excellent job in voicing him. Adds to his character greatly. A true king, through and through!
