- Bas Lansdorp (1977) has never been one to let bold ventures intimidate him. A born entrepreneur, he sees potential and opportunity when others shy away. He utilizes an articulate vision and genuine enthusiasm coupled with infectious powers of persuasion to get his point across. These attributes are useful in his new company, Mars One, that will send humans to Mars in 2023.
Organizing a manned mission to Mars has been Bas' dream for many years. Before starting Mars One, he was the co-founder of Ampyx Power. Despite the success of Ampyx Power, he decided to leave when someone gave him the idea that merged all the pieces of the Mars dream together: a mission to Mars can be financed by involving the whole world as an audience for the mission.
Bas received his Master of Science in mechanical engineering from Twente University in 2003. He worked on a PhD at Delft University of Technology for five years before abandoning it to start his first company Ampyx Power. Since February 2011, Bas is working full time on getting humanity to Mars.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. I'm sure the materials will be quality and expensive, but they will still not got with the most expensive best option if they think they have something functional. Make no mistake, this is about making money as much as it is about exploration. Also, I've watched a bunch of Marsone vids and there have been no explanations on how they plan to grow new foods and how their water system will work. Remember that mars is significantly further from the sun than earth and light from the sun is dimmer.
Ive got a question, why send the supply capsule, before they know where to put the base in... It seems like a dumb idea to me. Maybe they still got some info about where to put it, and the rover will further explore it more to make it better. But why not ask for NASA help, and use the existing rovers there, to find the location, and dont have to travel with 1.2 (2.5 on earth) tons of weight, from the landing location to the actual base, whenever they find it.
I would like to see how well he puts actions to his words, is he in the list of the first people to go to mars?

They'll do their best, but they'll also go with the lowest bidder for most of their materials/equipment. People make mistakes and any number of mistakes will be deadly on mars. Mars also has a pretty brutal environment and no food. If anything breaks, and things will, if the food runs out, and it could, or if someone goes crazy, and they might.... this could get interesting. It's a really cool project and i'm all for it. I just don't think they're gonna live past year one.
I'd go to Mars if it was by train with my own compartment and a dinning car where I could go for a hot meal. Oh, and an observation car for lounging, reading and looking out the window.
One question. Mars has high radiation from the sun because it has no magnetic protective field like the Earth to protect us from the solar wind and intersteler radiation. How do you plan on protecting the habitats on Mars from Solar radiation and the solar wind etc?

I know it sound crazy and it is one way trip and undoubtedly life of the first people on Mars will be very hard...but i would be honoured if i could be one of the first people which can "represent" humankind on Mars. It is one of my biggest dreams. Now i am studying and i will be 32 years old in 2023 and i thing it will be great age to be one of the first people on Mars -not to young not to old.

the problem is... if venturing mars doesn't become popular enough quickly.. you then have to keep supplying supplies and people in hope that it will be in the future.. or stop immediately to spare yourselves the cost. otherwise it would just be a hole in the budget that would just continue to grow
We have the technology! We have developed the Dehumidifier, Oxygen Extractor, Hydroponics, Inflatable Buildings, and better rocket propulsion. Lets put these technologies together and go to #mars!

What is ignored here is the energy management problem, in specific cooling. ALL energy used, finally will turn to heat at ambient/habitat temperature. Mining and production of live support materials on Mars require a lot of energy, while Mars' atmosphere is too thin to cool off much, unless huge heat-exchangers are installed, larger than the habitats themselves. We have the technology to do it. The biggest problem is Mars doesn't have the energy to support life. Everything needed will have to be shipped there from Earth.

Yeah, the 'pods' in which they will live and produce water and oxygen are slightly bigger than the Dragon capsule currently used for ISS supply missions. They are going to use the Falcon 9 rocket to take the rovers to Mars then the Falcon 9 Heavy for the living pods.
What is it that makes you furious? Is it taking risks? We're all going to die anyway, and for one I would be willing to go, regardless of the risks.
Risks needs to be taken to make progress, and I'm one who feel it has become standard to fear risks and take safe small steps. I despise that. I would rather risk my life to do something exciting and extremely challenging than to live a safe life.

if that were the case, Nasa would've had manned missions to mars by now. We're talking about an organization with a national budget, a history of space missions and expertise. If they thought human living on mars is a ludicrous idea, mars one has no hope, media speculate or not.

Asking the question below because I believe it. Yes we must leave this planet Earth if the human race is to survive, but make sure you study about radiation from the sun and no atmosphere or Magnetic field to protect humans. All habitats must have buffers against the Solar wind Radiation etc!!
Yea, it's gonna be hard. But I think the main problem is going to be the money. Sure, if they manage, they will definitely make loads of cash through tv rights, but I really doubt that many companies will risk putting large amounts of money into this project because it's that risky and likely to fail... to bad really.
I love Bas, he takes all his criticism and faces it with strategy. He is truly an inspiration to me.
Applicants need to be selected by the public from a group of scientists or serious researchers... Nobody wants Snookie in Space. This is a disaster waiting to happen. Still the very fact that the only way the money for such an important mission can be raised is via this method, speaks volumes about humanity anyway.

So what happens when the humans are on Mars, and the companies plan of a TV show doesn't work. That means no more money to sustain them anymore aka you die.
Really the main money making day is going to be the first 40 days where they see the planet, land, and start to get settled. After that, shits gonna get really boring until they die. So, TV companies are probably looking to cash in on the landing and don't give a fuck after that. In fact, the actual landing is the main thing that Bas brings up as the money making moment of this trip so they'll get their money even if the people don't last 6 months.

Have you researched that? I've spent the last 3 days dedicated to researching which challenges they actually have to make it possible and so far I've found that it's not as many as you seem to think. I'm starting to lean towards thinking it will be possible. Most questions you might have are answered through Mars One's ever-expanding FAQ (since so many skeptic and cynical critics keep asking questions) on their website. Plus you're welcome to ask them further questions.

The idea of sending people over for a reality show makes me furious. Can this organization guarantee the survival of the crew indefinitely? Without such promise, this is a suicide mission. This presenter should go to mars himself and "forget the return mission"

I can understand how he'll raise the 6 Billion dollars for the first landing through broadcasting revenues. But how's he going to fund all the other 4 billion dollar landings every 2 years? and the money for supp,y missions as well?

I completely agree, Obama crippled NASA after other administrations had starved it for funding and purpose. Seeing these new private companies spring up literally just over a few years has given me so much hope for our future. It's just that from all timetables from most space companies, the number 2020's keeps getting thrown around.. oh well :(

I think going to Mars would save lives if we could redirect our resources into building spacecraft and the space shelters set up nuclear bombs missiles and other such weapons of war
This idea will continue on to the next person to carry on a legacy. It is my greatest mission to carry on my plans to colonize Mars within the next 10 years. Starting this year with Mars 2020 Rover. We need to study more of the planet and study its sedimentary rocks of how old are they. And figure out where to protect us from cosmos radiation from Mars atmosphere is pretty thin.

Secondly. It's hardly a "reality show". Reality shows today spend time adding fake drama to make it more entertaining to watch. I personally hate shows like that, primarily because of that reason. Instead, this will be a "live broadcast" of what is actually happening. It will be of inspiring people, elected by the public (after having passed qualification rounds). It will be of taking large risks to do inspiring, ground-breaking exploration and research. It's not unrealistic. It's just hard.
The radiation levels on Mars is nearly the same as in low earth orbit, and it's not that hard to exercise, be it in zero or 38% Earth gravity. Everybody stop whining.

It doesn't have to be a 7month trip! He should tell everyone about plasma engines. It would then take less than 2months. That will encourage a lot more people.

As he mentioned. The London Olympic games generated over 3-4billion dollars of revenue over 3 weeks off the tv rights and sponsorship alone. Can you imagine how many more people will watch the mars landing then the Olympics !
Well take that number and multiply it by 4 billion...that's how he will come up with the money.
Not sure how the law works when a non profit organization shuts down and it has left over money in its account. Maybe it will be distributed among its donors, or it simply goes to the government, but it definitely wont be allowed to end up in the hands of its board member's personal use.

What? So Elon Musk takes his idea and makes it reality. Bas seems not to have any idea of technologies..
So *many people complain that Mars One is a scam,* but apart from the admitted difficulty of the cost to get their, i think their biggest hurdle is not the cost but rather the negative attitude people have towards it. Space X doesnt get the same negativity and Elon Musk has gone from saying it will cost the average American house price, to $100,000 per person. And thats for a return flight!!!! You dont think they can raise $50,000 per person? I dont hear anything wrong with his funding logic either, movies make billions in profits, events make billions etc. Its just the lack of interest and negativity which is the biggest hurdle and not his plan. If humans were more interest and internet buzz was excited to see this, and we'd tune in by the millions, they'd have more than enough to fund the project. Its the lack of public enthusiasm thats hurting them.
Lastly Mars One to insure its efficiency merged with a private company which after an audit doubled its original estimate to the millions of assets Mars One has accumulated for its task.
Oh actually this is the real last point. Mars One has been carrying out research using Mars soil simulate (mined in Hawaii and according to NASA its the closest thing to Martian soil) on food production from plants which is easily the most complicated part of the project and least worked on. Everything else is being worked on by others as well, and structures on Mars are easily buildable with the tech we have. Knowing all the correct microbes and combinations to use, and how 1000s of species all rely on each other is a problem still to crack if we dont want a failing eco system.

He's not saying its impossible, he's saying that MarsOne is a scam. They're only busy with getting funding and picking volunteers who all paid a fee to get into the program. If thats not a red flag, I don't know what is. Our current rockets can't get people to Mars, and if they did they'd die because there's no radiation shielding technology. And should they get there, they're not sure on how to build a sustainable habitat. They say they'll use a modified SpaceX rocket and lander (only SpaceX would have to do those modifications themselves), but SpaceX pretty much told them to piss off.
I'm convinced humanity will set foot on Mars one day (and other solar systems beyond Sol). There are serious people working on it, but MarsOne is not the 'company' that'll do it. Its like a get rich quick scam. People pay the fee only to find out that there never was a Nigerian prince that left you millions.

we know rather well how much radiation a crew will have on a tripp to mars, radiation exposure for a 360-day return trip to Mars will be 662 plus or minus 108 millisieverts(mSv)
that is a increase of canser risk with 2%. (you have allready a 22% risk of canser on erth, it is actualy less than for a smoker)
on the surfice you are better shilded, and if you cover the living unit with soil you will be as protected as on erth.
There are just sooo many things that can go wrong. They bring up the space station as an example, but the space station has basically the same sunlight as earth and also can easily receive any supplies it needs from earth within two days. Theres no way they can cart 4 years worth of food out to mars, they're gonna have to make their own food out there get their own water and survive massive solar and dust storms.
They are in an entirely self sustainable environment. Water is generated from extracting it from soil, food is produced from the inflatable hydroponics room and oxygen is created by splitting the water into Hydrogen and Oxygen. So in theory if they didn't gain any more funding they would still survive but just have no more supply missions. Read the FAQ at mars-one.com for more information
I believe the cost of such a manned mission would be closer to a Trillion dollars. This would have to be a large ship to carry all the supplies needs to live for four years and would have to make a soft landing on the planet. Also all the equipment to process the Martian soli inot air, fuel and water would also have to be taken. This is a disaster in the making.
Mars in 2023. Hopefully technology will improve every 4 years so we can get to mars in half the time. I would really hope that rocket power will be the thing of the past in the next 20 years or so. Coming up with reusable space parts every time we blast off so we don't waist materials lost floating in space because of space rockets.
