Hey Bob, I recently made a video about CinemaSins and the Kong: Skull Island situation, and used a short part of this Sherlock Holmes video of yours in it, as I think you made some great points here. I referenced your channel of course, and I hope this is alright with you. All the best.
Chris Cole Not to mention that “sins” are used in the theology of Abrahamic religions as essentially a tallied score of exactly how worthy you are of burning in a lake of fire for all eternity, subjected to ceaseless torture from hideous monsters that the human mind can barely comprehend. I’d say that’s pretty definitively negative.
I don't think they fought over the definition of the word "sin". This guy argue that the definision of the word "sin" isn't flexible enough not what a sin is. You know what... I'm too tired to do this. If you don't get what he ment by that then too bad for you...

As someone who used to enjoy CinemaSins, a major thank you for making this video. The final straw for me was when they criticized James Gunn in his recent controversy involving Disney. CinemaSins has made some VERY questionable "jokes" in the past, including making light of Chris Brown physically beating Rihanna. So they have very little room to claim others are incapable of changing their views on certain subjects, and learning to abstain from problematic behavior. James Gunn, at the very least, has apologized for his remarks (afaik). CinemaSins is purely brainless, and if I want comical movie commentary, there are infinitely better sources for it. You've earned a subscriber, friend.
Additional sin-sin: Pizzicato is a technique for playing a string instrument by plucking the strings with one's fingers, first described in 1602. So...No. You don't need a bow to play a violin and classical performers have been playing violins without bows for HUNDREDS of years. Sorry, Cinema Sins...try again. Source: 14 years of classical violin training.
Howie J I play the cello. I learned pizzicato in my very first lesson, long before I learned how to even hold the bow. It's not exactly an obscure technique.
George Weber my point was it’s rare that someone has any experience with string instruments not the difficulty of pizzicato- so you really didn’t contradict my point
Then you may as well direct that same point at every instance in this video where CS made a bad joke based on bad (re: lack of) research, which is the original criticism.
Wilfred Ho yea, I would say that if outside research is necessary the movie did something wrong. However, many of the sins are not necessary to research. Often you can just assume the movie did it right, or at least just accept the movie’s portrayal of situations we aren’t knowledgeable about. I’m just saying that CS is picky and has useless nitpicks, but that they are right about not researching stuff. In this scenario it is odd to see someone pluck a violin- it is a fair question to wonder why you wouldn’t use a bow. Some of CS sins are worse, but this one is a fair question in my opinion.
The "How did you see that?" "Because I was looking for it," exchange is also a famous quote from the Sherlock Holmes stories by Doyle. The Guy Ritchie films are full of quotes from the original books. Also, him noticing that "That's the Irene I knew" IS in fact indicating that she's returned to a life of crime, which she'd given up to get married-again, right out of the book. She tells Holmes in the previous scene that she's now divorced and he's noting that she's back to how he remembered her. Watson is established as being a spiritualist (much like Doyle himself) in the books as a counterpoint to Holmes's rationalist approach. These guys know nothing about the story they're critiquing. Oh, and fun fact: the man Holmes is boxing in this movie (credited as "McMurdo") is actually the same guy he's speaking with in the quote from The Sign of Four that you used, where he's initially unwilling to let Holmes into a house he's guarding until Holmes reminds him that he's the man who once kicked his ass in an amateur boxing match.
>"How did you see that?" "Because I was looking for it," It also, in two sentences, is a great illustration of the difference between Holmes and Watson. Holmes is observant enough to think about there might be an invisible weapon, maybe from the way that Blackwood was just standing there, while Watson is the one ready to rush to the girl's defense and be all brave and all that. It's why they make such a good team and (partly) why Watson marrying and moving out scares Holmes so much and is the major theme of the film and oh my god I'm getting mad at cinemasins again
Fun fact: the last witch trial in Britian happened in 1944, and there were trials for it in the 1890s, so it could absolutely happen that someone be sentenced for black magic
"That's the Irene I know" confusion from cinemasins was the most frustrating thing I heard in their video. Thank you for pointing out how obvious it was!
thank god someone called them out on their bull shit, I've watched a few of their videos and more then half of the things that don't understand are literally explained at some point or another or are just blatantly obvious, they just use these things to get a higher number on their idiotic sin counter
@@spartanretro yes but the film is. Pointing oui flaws of a film is a smart and good idea that they respected at the beginning. But some film are just flawless so they create Sins from scratch which is wrong in my opinion. Is like the firefire who stare to long at the flame and becomes an arsonist.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING MINDFUL OF WHO SHERLOCK IS MENTALLY POINTING OUT HIM HAVING A SENSORY OVERLOAD MADE ME SO HAPPY BC MOST PEOPLE DONT CALL IT THAT AND JUST GO "oh its too loud in this room" WHICH IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM SENSORY OVERLOAD
tbh this movie has probably the best depiction of what sensory overload actually feels like that i've seen in a movie or show. a point that people tend to not get is that it's not just "too loud", it's the inability to tune out background activity. it's trying to pay attention to your conversation when you can't tune out the conversation next to you. It's noticing every laugh, every movement, how your clothes rub against your skin, the flickering of a light, the temperature of a room all at once and it's so overwhelming you can't even hear yourself think.
My dad somehow missed all the promotional material for BvS when we went to see it in theaters, and he had no idea who Wonder Woman was until she pulled out her lasso of truth. Being that he was used to the Linda Carter look and not familiar with her origins or given name this is understandable. That was my lesson in why character introductions are actually needed in stories.
Great vid. One note: In bare knuckle boxing, slapping your opponent is not mockery. The human head is almost literally skin and bone, so punching someone in the head with your bare fist is a good way to break your hand. Thus, slaps and palm strikes are preferable over knuckle to skull contact since our palms are padded and what gets KOs is the force more than the hardness of the object striking you.
its litt you get clocked hard enough almost anywhere in the skull and you’ll get knocked out. Also your fist and your hand weigh the same. Also it’s more about the force of the object than the hardness.
The fist is heavier and more powerful, but hands are full of delicate small bones. Punching hard stuff improperly is a good way to get rid of your ability to fight completely, no matter how strong you are.
I love how the director complimenting RDJ's English accent went from "it's pretty good" to "it's flawless, best I have ever heard, maybe the only good one there is" in the span of like a few seconds.
Quick point about the shipyard fight that makes it even worse: Not only did Holmes & Watson's fight basically destroy a shipyard and cause thousands of pounds in damage, it also resulted in the premature launching and subsequent sinking of a ship into the River Thames, the most heavily trafficked body of water in the world then and now, so it's a miracle they didn't damage or sink any other ships that may have been sailing by. Further, one can tell by the half-complete ship's iron hull and distinctive ram bow that this wasn't just any ship they sank, it was a warship. So not only did Holmes and Watson just cause tens of thousands of pounds in damages and destroy months of work, they're also now in deep shit with the British Royal Navy.
I didn't mind CinemaSins until I listened to their podcast and realised how seriously they take what they're doing, one of the hosts in particular has a real snooty attitude, now I can't listen to either without cringing.
im really late to the comments but im 99% sure that cinemasins made fun of all of sherlock’s autistic-coded characteristics which is honestly on-brand for them considering the whole “cancer awareness month puts manly men in pink” joke
Sherlock Holmes isn’t coded autistic, he’s hopelessly addicted to cocaine which gives him those traits He’s not neurodivergent (in that way at least) he’s a massive junkie Edit: on second thought (with the particular case of the movie) yeah I can see him being autistic in that… as well as being a junkie
@@TulpechaidoplaysMC Ik this is old, but Sherlock has always been autistic coded, and sometimes he can be interpreted as adhd coded. Him having a cocaine addiction is likely him trying to self medicate, whether he realizes that or not. Autistic people, as well as disabled people in general, are at risk for developing addictions because of systemic ableism barring them access to proper accommodations and treatment. Addiction is also a disability btw.
Two things - 1) I absolutely love this video! It is great to see someone critique cinemasins. You really summarised how I often feel. 2) One of the sins is about London geography - I understand that the London Bridge shot is planting for later pay-off but to go via the river (even without crossing it) which is significantly further south and literally the opposite direction to reach pentonville prison is still illogical. I live in London and have studied the history of it. Even in a late 1800s to pre WW1 era, the roads still have existed. It is, I believe, simply a case of a film wanting the iconic landmark and set up more than perfect accuracy, which is fine but I thought I would say. While your criticism of their sin stands, the point that their route would still make no sense is actually valid based on London's geography. I hope you aren't offended.
I remember when CinemaSins first started and the videos were 2 to 3 minutes long and they weren't quite so bad but now they've bloated into 20 minute nitpick and shitty jokeathons
+Houston Bass Yeah! I remember when CS was good like when they did their 1st video of EWW Amazing Spider-Man and there were 3 separate joke sins about Bing or that classic sin about Uncle Ben unsolving a Rubik's cube, a personal favourite it really made a strong comment on the quality of the film. Oh how about in that video when they made that lap-dance sin, what a great choice!... Now you see what that was would be called satire, the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticise people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues, such as what CinemaSins actually is, a fact that many people seem to just straight-up not realise or ignore. CS is a satire of movie reviews as a whole, the entire concept is a comedy channel that focuses on people that make stupid, absurd commentary about movies and film and satirising them by using a character that embellishes and exaggerates that act to such an extreme manner that people constantly complain and whine about how wrong they are and how they're so stupid for not doing research. Honestly all videos like this go to prove is how effective CS really are and what a great job they are doing at their videos. Thanks, +Shesellssheshells you unaware, ignorant, ridiculous, cotton-headed, ninny-moggin.
@@DaveyDDial1 you kind be wrong tho. if CS were only a satire of bad critics it would be fine but they are not. their video are not meta. I agree that a lot of the joke are exaggerated, made up or self refereed. but the lake of research and contexte is not a positive. their goal is to make people critical of the movies, not of themselves in my opinion. and they make a bad job at it.
8:52 Punching wrong is a great way to break your knuckles. In barekuckle boxing, it would actually be a bad idea to always punch, all the time. While I agree that the applause is to frustrate his opponent and goad him into fighting poorly, many of the slaps are less to aggravate, and more to try to trauma his opponents various different nerve clusters, and try to stun him. Holmes has no problem with a balled-fist punch later in the bout, but it's less damaging and risky to Holmes to make liberal use of elbow strikes, palm strikes, and slaps or chops to sensitive places, as much as is practical. As you rightly point out, Holmes is an avid student of anatomy, and he sees no reason to risk breaking his knuckles, some of the softest bones in the human body, on strikes that ultimately won't do much damage to his opponent, like the forehead, when the mandible, for example, is a far better target. If you want to box his ears and disorient him, a punch would actually apply less force and be less effective than open handed slap. Boxing fans often wax romantically about how it is a "science", and Holmes is the quintessential scientist. Of course every strike is going to be a calculation, "How can I hit something soft of yours with something hard of mine?"
I had never fully realized how harmful and toxic Cinema Sins’ videos were before encountering your channel. While I always took their videos with a grain of salt and got some level of enjoyment out of them if only for them occasionally having a funny bit of commentary regarding a movie I’d seen and enjoyed (poking fun at it, essentially) I never considered what kind of impact their inaccurate criticisms could have on their typical demographic. Thank you for opening my eyes to this and for your detailed and thoughtful critiques of their videos, and their entire channel as a whole.

Dark Knight he wishes he was a writer and he was in Hollywood, rich, and had enough money to fill a swimming pool. so he's jealous, which leads to his ignorance and stupidity.
Another thing about 3:30 - in actual fact, lots and lots of people will watch this movie without seeing the poster, trailer, or DVD cover. Lots of people decide which movies to see in theaters by checking the titles of currently playing movies and seeing if any of them sound interesting (and maybe glancing at its Rotten Tomatoes score). Lots of people go to see movies that their friends/spouses/family members pick out without themselves knowing anything about the film beforehand. When this movie inevitably ends up on Cable TV, lots of people will see it because they saw "Sherlock Holmes" while scrolling through the channel guide and decided to check it out. The bottom line is that assuming that the audience knows absolutely nothing about your movie beforehand is good filmmaking practice, because if your movies is successful then lots of people *will* see it without knowing anything about it beforehand.
+Yuki Ahmed the way CinemaSIns does their videos requires very little actual effort from what i can tell. the only actual work the guy does is selecting the clips from the movies to include in the video, some mild audio mixing, and sometimes he has to make a PNG of an arrow or a circle appear to highlight a detail. very little work required
One of the biggest departures from the source material was the hate-hate relationship between Watson's wife to be/wife and Holmes. In the books they got along quite well and she would often encourage Watson to accompany Holmes on his investigations.
Thank you for opening my eyes to this. I often put cinema sins on in the background and although I've never just blindly accepted their criticisms I hadn't realised just how cynical, manipulative a cash grab it really was until now.
I really feel like Cinemasins has become a strong example of the belief that if someone has to state their work is satire, then it wasn't very good satire. The sins inbetween the jokey jokes sound like legitimate criticism, and are not easy to deduce as another joke. But then there is the fact that they made many comments about the videos not being serious, and that's how many fans even know it's all one big comedy series. So then they go into the video knowing it's satire. And then when people take it seriously, or are trying to point out that it's just not very good satire, the fans say it's all on them for missing the obvious comedy. But it's not always obvious, and it's definitely not always funny. I like Cinemasins, but I have yet to find any legitimately good defense made by fans in regards to these videos. And yet they have the gall to say you're taking this too seriously. Like someone balls-deep in the fandom like they are might not be the most unbiased opinion on Cinemasins.
Some asshole makes a video series entirely about making nitpicky comments about movies. Some dude decides to take it all as legit criticisms and makes a video saying how wrong they are. This is literaly only a step or 2 away from being argueing with trolls. Cinemasins is great when you realise its all a joke and not all jokes are funny for all people.
In order to get a "joke", Cinemasins takes each movie apart and treating each scene and moment as if it exists in its own space. He's essentially making things up. For comedy to work, there needs to be some element of truth. Good satire makes you think, highlights the absurd, can evoke change, and is always clearly satire.
I like cinema sins, but I really don't like how they take scenes out of context or purposefully misunderstand what's happening in order to force in a cheap "sin." Great video.

7:00 Another note about this sin: Mary says right after his observations about Watson that it isn’t really fair because *Holmes already knows Watson* and that he should try it on a stranger, such as herself. The film, quite literally, points out what he considers a “sin”. But does take it out? Nope, because that would require going back after watching the next 10 seconds of movie and editing his script

To add to the supernatural thing, the Sherlock Holmes stories regularly had supernatural elements in them and Holmes very often did appear to skirt with the idea of supernatural occurences being as they are before denouncing them. Whether it's just a way to keep the reader engaged or to show how Holmes was not entirely as 'grounded' as his reputation would suggest, they are undeniably parts of his original character.

Hi, while it's true that some of cinemasins' jokes really are less funny if you have a good understanding of the movie, most of the factual basis of the joke is justifiably irrelevant... such as how ridiculous it is that a reclusive agoraphobic investigator is in some sort of street boxing match. Yes, sherlock boxing is canon, but that really doesn't matter here.
He is willing to leave the home for investigations and dangerous shenanigans; how is boxing out of character? He just doesn't like leaving with purpose, and he doesn't like interacting with others unless he knows he can get something worthwhile out of them.
10:39 Another mistake with cinemasins video that bobsvids didn't mention: This movie is set in the 19th century (and the very end of the 19th century at that), not the 18th, and the London police force didn't even exist in the 18th century as it wasn't invented until the 1820s. The guys who run cinemasins are such idiots and their "film criticism"/poor attempts at humour are so inconsistent that I can't even tell if this mistake is intentional or not
Nice. I don't know if this can be a series, but I would really like it to be one. Even as a one-off it was more entertaining and educational than the original video.

"That's Robert Maillet. He's a real person and you're calling him Frankenstein's monster. Nice." Okay I just watched this to see Cinemasins video picked apart, but that was hilarious.
He says "do some goddamn research", but then he has a research fail of his own. CS "Sinned" the fact that Blackwood was convicted of using black magic, wondering if society was really that backwards. In fact, it was not. By the time period of the movie, the only law in England regarding black magic was that you can be convicted of fraud for pretending to practice it. He could still be hung for murdering people, but the Sin about him being convicted of being a magician is correct.
After six years, this video remains fantastic as it truly encapsulates why Cinemasins' videos are bottom-of-the-barrel in quality and entertainment value. Despite what their most fervent fans and apologists claim, Cinemasins' videos are overwrought, poorly written clickbait with a creator that has capitalized off having it both ways with film criticism and comedy.
10:20 Apparently CinemaSins missed the scene where Irene and Sherlock discussed her recent marriage and divorce. Holmes was following her partly to find out what she was doing in his life again, and partly to confirm she really hadn't reformed when she got married.
15:14 also in the occult a symbol of good is traditionally shown upright and a symbol of evil is traditionally used upside-down such as pentagrams and crosses. They make it a point to explain that Standish and the rest of the order use magic for good and what is commonly referred to as "white magic" and Blackwood uses "black magic" for evil.
At 9:58, Cinemasin's comment about Victorian London not being "that backwards" is misleading. He cuts the clip after the words "You are sentenced to death for the practice of black magic", implying that is the only reason they are executing him, while the whole quote is "You are sentenced to death for the practice of black magic, the unholy murder of 5 innocent young women, and the attempted murder of a 6th." I would imagine the 5 counts of murder and 1 count of attempted murder are contributing to his sentence quite a bit.
18:25 The whole history lesson about engagement rings here is maddening. Cinema Sins waited until the fucking end of the movie to try doing actual research.

Chris Cole Not to mention that “sins” are used in the theology of Abrahamic religions as essentially a tallied score of exactly how worthy you are of burning in a lake of fire for all eternity, subjected to ceaseless torture from hideous monsters that the human mind can barely comprehend.

Build Environment TV clearly the average moviegoer has 14 years of violin experience- CS represents the dumbass in the room not the violin expert
I have to admit, the James Bond scene with his name taken out really works for me, I love how tense it feels
I think he meant that, they couldn't skip his name everytime he introduces himself despite of you already knowing who he is, but yeah, is tense tho
because you know the original scene... if not you would be hella confuse.
I thought the scene was fucking hilarious.
>"How did you see that?" "Because I was looking for it,"
It also, in two sentences, is a great illustration of the difference between Holmes and Watson.
Thank you for pointing out how obvious it was!

tbh this movie has probably the best depiction of what sensory overload actually feels like that i've seen in a movie or show. a point that people tend to not get is that it's not just "too loud", it's the inability to tune out background activity. it's trying to pay attention to your conversation when you can't tune out the conversation next to you.

Wow I didn't know that, v interesting!

You've said everything I've felt about CinemaSins in one concise video. Thank you.
im really late to the comments but im 99% sure that cinemasins made fun of all of sherlock’s autistic-coded characteristics which is honestly on-brand for them considering the whole “cancer awareness month puts manly men in pink” joke
Sherlock Holmes isn’t coded autistic, he’s hopelessly addicted to cocaine which gives him those traits
He’s not neurodivergent (in that way at least) he’s a massive junkie
Edit: on second thought (with the particular case of the movie) yeah I can see him being autistic in that… as well as being a junkie

+Houston Bass and back before they sold out and upload like 20 videos in a week now
+Houston Bass Yeah! Wow, I didn't know CinemaSins was this bad. Never really watched it myself. Loved this riff on it, good job!
Of course every strike is going to be a calculation, "How can I hit something soft of yours with something hard of mine?"
great comment
I had never fully realized how harmful and toxic Cinema Sins’ videos were before encountering your channel. While I always took their videos with a grain of salt and got some level of enjoyment out of them if only for them occasionally having a funny bit of commentary regarding a movie I’d seen and enjoyed (poking fun at it, essentially) I never considered what kind of impact their inaccurate criticisms could have on their typical demographic. Thank you for opening my eyes to this and for your detailed and thoughtful critiques of their videos, and their entire channel as a whole.
I stopped watching cinemasins probably three years ago... they used to make short 3 to 5 min videos which had genuine plot holes that were pointed out but now it is just negative and stupid...
Dark Knight he wishes he was a writer and he was in Hollywood, rich, and had enough money to fill a swimming pool. so he's jealous, which leads to his ignorance and stupidity.
John Jamele I'm pretty sure he's talking about CinemaSins, not Dark Knight.
+Conduit657 100% agreed. thank you
Is it me or does it look like way more production went into this than the piece he's critiquing?
+Yuki Ahmed the way CinemaSIns does their videos requires very little actual effort from what i can tell. the only actual work the guy does is selecting the clips from the movies to include in the video, some mild audio mixing, and sometimes he has to make a PNG of an arrow or a circle appear to highlight a detail. very little work required
One of the biggest departures from the source material was the hate-hate relationship between Watson's wife to be/wife and Holmes. In the books they got along quite well and she would often encourage Watson to accompany Holmes on his investigations.
Three years late, but the sequel definitely built towards the books relationship.

Thank you for using that elusive thing called “context” to analyze a film.
Dude, I know this is an old video, but the James Bond part made me laugh so hard I think I tore a muscle in my chest xD
I am a fan of cinemasins. And an aspiring writer. When I first saw cinemasins, I thought it was a good medium to see what movies do wrong in an attempt to get MY own works right... I'm glad I found this channel, a solvent. Now I watch cinemasins to see the "criticism", then I came here to see which of those are legit. Thanks for exposing the madness
hold on. gotta pause this and go watch the movie again. you reminded me how much i liked it
+Saint Solitaire i recommend watching the man from uncle, too, if you havent already. same director. just rewatched it last night. really love that movie
Can you make this a series?
Tim Gonzales for real!
I hope so
Thank you for this, I really dont get the love for these things, I remember flipping out during everything wrong with age of ultron when they sinned it for "I guess captain america can telepathically call his shield back to him?" when he was saving the woman on the bridge in the 3rd act WHEN IT WAS CLEARLY SHOWN AT THE FIRST 5 MINS OF THE MOVIE HE HAS MAGNETS ON HIS SLEEVE THAT STARK HAS DESIGNED FOR HIM! this is the type of careless shitty jokes seen in all their vids
+TheBritainboy "You know, this superhero movie isn't very realistic" followed by the smuggest shit-eating smirk you can imagine
4:11 I think him ignoring the question actually made that scene slightly more entertaining
"That's Robert Maillet. He's a real person and you're calling him Frankenstein's monster. Nice."
Okay I just watched this to see Cinemasins video picked apart, but that was hilarious.
thank you so much. I have ALWAYS hated these videos. this was ultra-cathartic and you are my hero.
Sin Tally: 64
Sentence: Do some god damn research
+Ben Wasserman Two, no three weeks of it
He says "do some goddamn research", but then he has a research fail of his own.
Thanks for doing this. I've seen a lot of people take Cinema Sins too seriously.
+a cat which is definitely not what this video is all about
After six years, this video remains fantastic as it truly encapsulates why Cinemasins' videos are bottom-of-the-barrel in quality and entertainment value.
“hawkeye has a hoverbike, fuck you” is my new favorite phrase
18:25 The whole history lesson about engagement rings here is maddening. Cinema Sins waited until the fucking end of the movie to try doing actual research.
As far as accents go, i'll trust the Brit to inform me on British accents, sort of like how people from Boston complained about the accents in the Departed.
