Back then the animators Didn't have any worries, plus soundwave has an inside, most of his parts go there, and no transformer manipulates their size nowadays, y'know why Starscream looked like a dorito? Because the f15 was a giant model, so they had to shift his parts in those directions.

I think transformers were able to manipulate their size at times either that or Optimus is piloting a bigger version of him
