What is the Oct Tone & who are the Glasgow Synth Guild?

  • Here's something a little different ... a 'remaster' of an older design and a new synthesiser guild that act as a crack team super group of modular builders who are handling this exclusively.
    The Oct Tone is a remaster of an early design by Jason Lim (Instruo) that has been brought back to life by the Glasgow Synthesiser Guild. In this video I'll demo the Oct Tone, in my usual style with musical approaches to the features and uses. But we'll also have a little story time looking and who and what the guild are and why they exist.

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      oh I agree, that's a nice thing to have. A 'step' could then be an LFO that creates an arpeggio type ramp just on one step. Getting 'modular' by breaking down the bits that make a sequencer and patching your own leads to all sorts of great stuff like that.

    One thing I wasn’t quite clear on: with the scale quantizing, what determines the root note of the scale?

    • @JHJLIM
      @JHJLIM 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's defined by the oscillator.
      Voltages from the oct tōne are quantised over 0-5V, so if the oscillator is tuned to C at 0V then the quantised scale will extrapolate from there with C as Root :)

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Jason beat me to it, but yes the oscillator tuning is the root. The way I think about it that helps cement the learning of this stuff was that the quantiser the available notes on the fret board but the coarse/fine tuning the equivalent of me tuning the string on a guitar. The fret numbers changes notes if tune the string down, though the patterns and intervals stay the same.
      I actually think quantisers that set a root note can be more confusing. At first it's easy to think, I'll take a F harmonic minor (or whatever note and scale type) but it's not those notes without tuning the oscillators to correspond to it anyway.

    So if I had an idea for a module, could the GSG help make it a reality? I have a subset of the skills needed for a prototype.

      The retail price is lower than its predecessor was.
      Keep in mind an averaged postage cost factored in so it’s included within in a single fixed price.
      Material costs and labour are all tightly calculated for viability.
      It’s all small scale batch production, but the entire operation is controlled and run entirely by the builders! Which is the model of the Guild.
      No middle man involved.
      The builders and future developers will directly benefit from this model. And it means the weirdness of what’s produced can be limitless! Lower risk factor and very fun to be part of collaborations :)

    • @JHJLIM
      @JHJLIM 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I lay things out with a vague rule set that's evolved through the years.
      Placement of controls is something I've described with Ben at previous Modular Meets in Leeds.
      Very much a subjective element :)
      Logically the style of grid of jacks and grid of pots makes the most sense, but personally it just doesn't work for me.
      That's really the beauty of Eurorack. If there's a preferred style, there's a strong chance someone has made it!!

      @@punkassfunk I say go for it!! ☺️
      I landed on a design style that suits me, but my design MO with Instruō is first and foremost to design the instruments that I want to play with. Really is as simple as that :)
      I find development, programming and circuit design to scratch the creative itch as much as making music.
      I recommend to everyone to try it out. But will warn that the ratio of instrument design to music making easily shifts in balance!
