A Powerful Sequencer with lots of UNIQUE functions // NONO Modular Major Tom (Eurorack Prototype)

- I jumped at the chance to play with a prototype of Major Tom, NONO Modular's first Eurorack module, currently on Kickstarter (HERE - bit.ly/KickMajTom). It's very much still a prototype with updates already in place (beyond what I have here) and new ideas to be implemented as well.
NONO Modular have been in the Eurorack space for years with their cases (see those here nonomodular.com) but this is an impressive entry into the module space. Major Tom is 4 channel gate & CV sequencer with a unique polyrhythmic approach that places a 8th note triplet grid over a 16th note grid and allows you to sequence across both easily. There's also switchable variations per part, gate fragments, dynamic gate adjustments and plenty more.

*NOTE //* while I'm just making beats here, you could be using this for melodies, riffs and basslines or even 4 voice polyphonic work. These are just the things my quick playing led to.

OG Div baby for the wiiiiin!!! I love that she instantly and organically demonstrated what I think is the most outstanding feature of this module: it's designed in a way that is PLAYable, emphasis on the PLAY. It looks SO FUN!! Any module that gets us into that childlike state of play is tops on my list. I've backed the kickstarter and can't wait to figure out how the hell I'm going to fit this into my rack ;P Thanks as always for the great video and wonderful patching ideas!
Absolutely right, she asked to come and play, I got the stool out for her to stand on (she likes that, rather than moving gear down) and after a few minutes she asked to be in the video. Didn't have to say much for her to get it.

Smart play to let her do that because this has this lay out that looks accessible and most modules just looks like dificult stuff. Great design.
She got it with very little prompt from me. Good fun.
You just know their next module will be called “Ground Control” and they will interact well with each other. Then you can hook up Ground Control to Major Tom.

hard sync! The youngest loves the studio, anything she can touch, the eldest (in this video) is on and off. She loved that day though and wants to do it again. So she might be in more videos if she asks to be.
When i first saw this on the internet in December, i wasn't sure on how it worked but I'm quite glad they sent a unit for you to demo. I happily backed this today. Many thanks Ben.
It came just to play with and feedback really, I've gave some feedback and they've come back with great ideas and things that I think are already tweaked beyond my prototype which is great to see.
I'll be missing it as I post this back, but hopefully it's successful so we all have the option to get into it.

This is phenomenal, really seems to work with the way my mind/eyes work.
I feel like they've nailed and interface that's going to be easy to program and fun to play for people.
I have been trying very hard to avoid the modular drum machine money pit and this thing is making it so hard (sync). What an awesome sequencer, it honestly doesn't look like it does anything truly ground breaking from a technical side, but the interface design is genius. Watching this video I already feel like I could sit down and bust out a track

A lot of the functions are tried and testing, the way the gates fragment and level change isn't common but the interface makes it so playable. The one thing I've never seen is the triplet grid and straight grid there to sequence with simultaneously.

Cute, so cute!!! Your daughter is so cute :) the sequencer is nice too :) interesting, every time she tweaked the knobs randomly, the rhythm was staying musical
Thanks. So I programmed 10 variations per part before hand then just told her she could freely move them as she liked.

I backed this around NYE in the hopes of getting the desktop version to use with my Nord Drum 2. Really excited about it. If they add midi that would be the cherry on the cake
I hadn't even considered the desktop version in a case to move around. I still have a Nord Drum 2 as well, sensitive thing on the triggering I always found so I end up leaving it untouched for a while then getting excited by it again.
@@DivKid it's sensitive but once you get the max trig level dialled in it's easy to adjust the velocity sensitivity on the fly with the 'Decay Low' parameter. I love it, it just sounds so good, and given that Major Tom desktop is 6 channels + velocity gate outputs I'm hoping they should be best friends. Like I say midi would probably just make things like that easier though + allow for pitch control as well so I do hope they implement it

The dark version looks great (if only it was available in the euro format). Looks very fun.
I saw the dark version with the expander in a nice little case. Maybe that will be something they offer in the future as individual modules. Could just be limited to this though.

there's 4 CV outputs to go with the 4 tracks and they are quantised CVs. I used them in the video for modulating decays on drums but it could be a 4 voice polyphonic thing, or multiple riffs and melodies.
Thanks for this video. That's an amazing piece of kit. A powerful sequencer indeed. Once it has been thoroughly tested and processed through its prototype stage, I would be interested to know what price point that it might be launched at? Although I'm sure that you won't have that information as yet, but I'm hoping that the cost will be less powerful. However, I have my doubts bearing in mind how impressive it Is.

Do the CV outputs send only v/oct or they can be used for some modulations like envelopes, lfos, fixed voltage? As for drum purpose I personally would prefer modulation there rather than quantised notes..
currently (not seen mention of plans to change, but they're taking feedback on board) it's 1v/oct quantised outputs. I've largely ignored the notes and used them as stepped modulators for decay, filters etc.
@@DivKid yeah nice if they would add this option, but could be difficult to implement ..

Can this be used as melodic sequencer with the cv outs?
100% You could do 4 voice polyphonic weird stuff if you wanted. Or two voices and two extra lanes of accents and modulation sequences.
If I had more time I'd have got into melodic things and not just straight up beats but my time is limited for playing with the prototype.
That round display is exicting, is that a part you can order?
must be, I've seen them before but I've no idea of parts numbers or what to search beyond "round display".

Yep, quantised pitch outs. Each of the 4 tracks is a gate and CV output.
I produce ambient music, and I find this content interesting. I think this gear could be very useful for creating textures for example!
Absolutely! Slower tempos, dividing down to slower clocks on different tracks and triggering slow rising envelopes and using the CV for not just pitch but timbral change.
