THANK YOU! I thought something was wrong with my computer at first where I would need to get an external speaker. Turns out I accidentally turned off the microphone, now I can play my games on my laptop in peace.
I don't understand how helpful this can be for anyone when you're talking about the microphone settings, but you're actually in the speaker settings.

Thanks for the video! I thought my Corsairs finally kicked the bucket, so I bought a boom mic so I could use my Sony 1000xm3's. Still no audio! Following your steps though I was able to see my headset was set to hands free AND audio. Disabled the hands free in playback, and boom, it works!

Unfortunately; this method does not work for some of us. My microphone would work in voice recorder but not with MS camera program. Kept getting "enable mic in privacy ..." even though it was enabled and still wouldn't work. Finally found something that worked for me of which absolutely no one had the answer. Everyone just said the same thing here about enabling privacy settings (which didn't work). All I did was install Skype, tested it out, closed it down and opened up MS Camera and now the mic works in camera.

Lol I had discord and when my friends where talking all MY VOLUME WAS muted! ( except my friends talking on the mic ) so this happen when I was playing base raiders, and so if you got that problem, well just go to your discord settings, Go to Voice & Video, Scroll down until you see ATTENUATION, Turn it 0% , And voila your done and that is how I fixed my sounds :D

Hey, I’ve discovered a solution for this issue. It turns out that some PCs lack a combined microphone and headphone jack (TRSS). If your PC has separate mic and headphone jacks (TRS), the fix is straightforward: just grab a TRSS to TRS converter, and voilà-it’ll work seamlessly!, Thank me later, just make sure its working on your phone first

When you're in the Sound settings, you select Recording to get to your microphone settings. I don't know why he keeps calling the speakers a microphone, it says Speakers. Speaker properties do not affect the Microphone settings. It would only take a few minutes to create another video that was actually correct, or simply remove this one, but I guess views are more important.
WHAT IF IT DOESNT WORK WHEN PLAYIN GAMES?
I have the same problem, I use a headset and the headset came with a splitter, so when I plugged it in, the microphone tests work, however when I try to communicate in games, people can't hear my voice but they can hear the background noises such as youtube videos etc...

1. go to control panel
2. search and click on manage audio devices
3. go to recording and click on your desired microphone
4. click properties
5. click levels and make sure the button on the right of the volume isn't making your mic muted.

The functional fixes (turning MIc On/Off, sound settings, trying to determine if it is a microphone driver issue, etc.) are completely non-intuitive!!! why i cant see any more apps in "microphone" in settings than just voice recorder, Camera, Desktop app viewer, microsoft store, photos, and xbox game bar i cant see any more apps

You are only address a software issue, and one that is only on the Windows 10 operating system. This does not address a hardware issue,nor does it address issues for Linux users.

I went to troubleshooter, choose Microphone Recording. Troubleshooted, it said muted issue fixed. I don't know how but my microphone was muted. And now it's resolved
If you're also someone who's facing this same problem, please don't panic. I bought my Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14ITL6 yesterday and it was only until today i wanted to send a voice note to find a message popping up saying to connect to a microphone. I was puzzled because which laptop doesn't already have a built in microphone? Anyway, I just updated it to the final version of windows and now the microphone is working just fine. So the problem wasn't the hardware or anything. It was a software issue. Thankfully.

I have a SteelSeries Headset, where i have it connected to my pc. The Mic won't work, also not when the headset isn't connected.. I have been looking up driver updates, i have been looking onto this video and followed it's steps, nothing worked unfortunatly.

I have a Dell Laptop. In the sound tab in the control panel, rather than playback I selected "Recording." The internal microphone, "Microphone Array," in the "Levels" tab had somehow become muted. PITA but got it fixed!
